I bought the Kindle version after having trouble reading the paper version. For some reason, it was easier to read it. Same format just electronic; however, I am still glad I have both versions. Switching back and forth between the two of them sometimes is also very calming.

The Art of Study: The Sorbonne Method, by Edmond Bordeaux Szekely

This book is based on my lectures given in 1945. At that time many of my ideas about education appeared unorthodox and revolutionary. By now, most of these ideas have been generally accepted; yet it remains for them to be taken to heart by a civilization which is intoxicated by the superficial glitter of technological achievements. There is no doubt that the well-being of mankind in the present, as the fate of the human race in the future, depends more on Education than on anything else. As education is the transmission of ageless accumulated values of a long succession of previous generations, it is becoming more and more complex and, unfortunately, more and more technological.

Very Powerful Tools Of Learning
By Saliik Meskiin
Edmond Bordeaux Szekely has written a masterpiece. The author's reason for writing this book is to present the method of study he learnt at the Sorbonne in Paris. The result is a concise book that presents a powerful method of "studying" a book and not just reading it. He presents laws of nature, with examples from plant life, and uses them to explain the method. The author presents the laws of abundance followed by selection from that abundance, and finally, assimilation.

I no longer read books; I study them, and have found in this book an excellent method. This book is not only for students in schools or collages but for anyone who wants to seriously assimilate knowledge.

Sections include Creative Imagination: the link between thought and feeling, Diagnosing Intellectual Deficiencies, Research Work, and Know Thyself.

Ingenious Knowledge
By Scot Riser
In this small book Szekely gave me a method of study that I wish I had learnt a long time ago. He provided very important knowledge on the relationship between thought, feelings, and actions (as well as memory) with Creative Imagination providing the link between thoughts and feelings. The approach that he recommends is an active and engaging approach.

Praise for Blueprint for Revolution

“The title is no exaggeration. Otpor’s methods . . . have been adopted by democracy movements around the world. The Egyptian opposition used them to topple Hosni Mubarak. In Lebanon, the Serbs helped the Cedar Revolution extricate the country from Syrian control. In Maldives, their methods were the key to overthrowing a dictator who had held power for thirty years. In many other countries, people have used what Canvas teaches to accomplish other political goals, such as fighting corruption or protecting the environment.”—The New York Times

“A clear, well-constructed, and easily applicable set of principles for any David facing any Goliath (sans slingshot, of course) . . . By the end of Blueprint, the idea that a punch is no match for a punch line feels like anything but a joke.”—The Boston Globe

“An entertaining primer on the theory and practice of peaceful protest.”—The Guardian

“With this wonderful book, Srdja Popovic is inspiring ordinary people facing injustice and oppression to use this tool kit to challenge their oppressors and create something much better. When I was growing up, we dreamed that young people could bring down those who misused their power and create a more just and democratic society. For Srdja Popovic, living in Belgrade in 1998, this same dream was potentially a much more dangerous idea. But with an extraordinarily courageous group of students that formed Otpor!, Srdja used imagination, invention, cunning, and lots of humor to create a movement that not only succeeded in toppling the brutal dictator Slobodan Milošević but has become a blueprint for nonviolent revolution around the world. Srdja rules!”—Peter Gabriel

It asks (and not heavy-handedly): As long as you want to change the world, why not do it joyfully? It’s not just funny. It’s seriously funny. No joke.”—Todd Gitlin, author of The Sixties and Occupy Nation

Chapter I

It Can Never Happen Here

My beautiful city of Belgrade probably isn’t on your list of the top ten places to visit before you die. Some neighborhoods can be rough, and we Serbs have a reputation for being troublemakers, which is why we named a major street after Gavrilo Princip, the man accused of setting World War I in motion, and another after his band of revolutionaries. And then there’s the memory of our former dictator Slobodan Miloseˇvic´, the maniac who introduced “ethnic cleansing” to the world, started four disastrous wars with his neighbors in the 1990s, and brought on a slew of NATO bombings that ravaged the city. But none of that mattered to a group of fifteen Egyptians who visited Belgrade in June 2009. That’s because they weren’t looking for a relaxing summer getaway. They were coming to plan a revolution.

Given their particular agenda, the first place I wanted to show them is the last place I would have recommended to any other visitor: Republic Square. To get an idea of what this dirty and misshapen part of town looks like, imagine that someone took Times Square, made it much smaller, sucked out all the energy, removed the neon, and left only the traffic and the grime. The Egyptians, however, didn’t mind it at all—they were hoping to bring down their own dictator, Hosni Mubarak, and for them Republic Square wasn’t just a tourist trap but ground zero for a nonviolent movement that was started by a bunch of ordinary youngsters and grew into a massive political force that did the unthinkable and toppled Miloseˇvic´. I was part of that movement’s leadership, and my Egyptian friends came to visit hoping that there was something they could learn from us Serbs.

I led the group to a quiet corner, far away from the bustling cafés with their overworked waiters, and began my short talk. Once upon a time, I told them, pointing at the clusters of luxury shops—Armani, Burberry, Max Mara—that dotted Republic Square, Serbia’s inflation was so bad that the price for two pounds of potatoes skyrocketed from four thousand dinars to seventeen billion in just one year. If that wasn’t enough, we were also at war with neighboring Croatia. And if you tried to speak out against the disastrous policies that led our economy to collapse and our security to wither away, you were arrested and beaten or worse. In 1992, I was a freshman biology student, and the future for us young Serbs looked very, very bleak.

“Yeah,” one of the Egyptians responded with a laugh, “we know how that feels!”

The Egyptians continued to nod in understanding as I went on with my story. Faced with Miloseˇvic´’s terrors, I told them, the natural response, at least at first, was apathy. After all, my friends and I were not the type of people who could even imagine one day starting a movement. We weren’t aspiring politicians. We were college kids, and we shared the same passions as college kids all over the world: staying up late, drinking a lot, and trying to get a date. If you’d asked me back in those days what could get me out of the house and out to Republic Square, I wouldn’t have said a protest—I would have said a rock concert.

From my spot on the square’s sidelines, I tried to explain to my Egyptian friends why I loved Rimtutituki, a band whose musical-sounding name, freely translated, means “I put a dick in you,” hoping that the three or four women in the group who were wearing the hijab, the traditional headdress of observant Muslim women, wouldn’t be too mortified. In 1992, the band was the coolest thing in town, a bunch of rowdy guys who played fast guitars and were known for their rowdy lyrics. When they announced a rare free concert, my friends and I all promptly skipped class and filed into Republic Square to see our idols in action.

What happened next shocked us. Rather than give another of their fun-filled performances, the members of Rimtutituki rode into the square on the top of a flatbed truck, looking more like conquering generals than punk musicians. Then, with their truck driving around in circles, they sang a selection of their best-known songs, the words making such declarations as “If I shoot, then I won’t have time to fuck” and “There is no brain under the helmet.” You didn’t have to be a genius to understand what was going on: with the war still raging, Belgrade was filled with soldiers and tanks en route to the front, and here were the boys in the punk band mocking all this militarism, speaking out against the war, advocating a normal and happy life. And this in a dictatorship, where spitting out such slogans in public could get you in a lot of trouble.

As I ran after the truck, cheering on my favorite musicians, I had a series of epiphanies. I understood that activism didn’t have to be boring; in fact, it was probably more effective in the form of a cool punk show than as a stodgy demonstration. I understood that it was possible, even under the most seemingly dire conditions, to get people to care. And I understood that when enough people cared, and enough of them got together to do something about it, change was imminent. Of course, I didn’t really understand any of these things, at least not yet. It would take me years to think through the feelings I had that afternoon in Republic Square, to make sense of my insights and convert them to actions. But once I’d witnessed the possibility of successful and attractive nonviolent action, it was impossible to go back to my previous state of apathy. My friends and I now felt we had to do something to bring down Miloseˇvic´.

And Miloseˇvic´, to his credit, worked very hard to give us plenty of reasons to be furious. In 1996, he refused to accept the results of the parliamentary elections that would have unseated many of his goons and replaced them with members of the opposition, and when activists took to the streets to demonstrate, they were crushed by Miloseˇvic´’s police. In 1998, Miloseˇvic´ moved closer to total dictatorship, announcing that his government would now have complete control over all the affairs, academic and administrative alike, of Serbia’s six universities. It was more than my friends and I were willing to put up with. Getting together in our small, smoky Belgrade apartments, we decided to start a movement.

We called it OTPOR, which means “resistance,” and we gave it a logo, a cool-looking black fist that was a riff on a potent symbol of social change that has served everyone from the partisans who fought against the Nazis in occupied Yugoslavia during World War II to the Black Panthers in the 1960s. For OTPOR’s fist, we used a design that my best friend, Duda Petrovic, had scribbled on a scrap of paper in the hopes of impressing one of the girls from the movement. It was edgy, and it was perfect.

All this talk of logos may sound shallow, I told my Egyptian friends, but branding was important to us. Just as people all over the world see the red-and-white swoosh and instantly recognize Coca-Cola, we wanted Serbs to have a visual image they could associate with our movement. Besides, at that time we realized only too well that even if we begged all of our friends and family members to come out and support our movement, we probably couldn’t get more than thirty people to show up at a march. We could, however, spray-paint three hundred clenched fists in one evening, and one morning early in November the citizens of Belgrade woke up to discover that Republic Square had been covered by graffiti fists. At the time, when everyone was terrified of Miloseˇvic´, this gave people the sense that something large and well-organized was lurking just beneath the surface.

And, soon enough, it was.

Seeing the fist and the word “resistance” plastered everywhere, young people naturally wanted to know more about this new, hip thing. They wanted to join it. To weed out the poseurs, the flakes, and, worst of all, the potential police informants, we gave them a sort of test: to prove they were serious, they themselves had to go out and spray-paint the fist in selected locations. Before too long, we had not only covered the city with our symbol but also recruited a small group of committed people who were ready to believe regime change was possible.

Once we had recruited this core group, it was time to make some crucial decisions about what kind of a movement we wanted to be. The first thing that was obvious to us was that we were going to be a strictly nonviolent movement, not only because we believed—strongly—in peaceful resolutions, but because trying to use force against a guy who had tens of thousands of policemen, hundreds of thousands of soldiers, and God knows how many thugs at his disposal seemed to us like a very bad idea. We could never outpunch Miloseˇvic´; but we could try to build a movement so strong and so popular that he’d have no choice but to succumb to it, accept an open and free election, and be promptly defeated.

The other crucial decision we made was that OTPOR wouldn’t be a movement centered on charismatic leaders. This, in part, was a practical consideration: as soon as we got big, we realized, the police would tear into us with all their might, and a movement without easily identifiable people in charge would be harder for the authorities to take down in one swoop. Arrest any one of us, went the logic, and fifteen others would take his or her place. But in order to hide in plain sight, we had to be sneaky. We needed to spark a series of small and creative confrontations with the regime. We wanted to capture that Rimtutituki moment, that special and hopeful feeling that resistance was not futile and that victory was within reach.

Pointing across to the far corner of the plaza, I asked the Egyptians to look at the squat and deserted shopping complex from the 1980s just beyond the taxi stand that was completely sheathed in black glass. That spot was where Miloseˇvic´’s security services had arrested me on December 15, 1998. It was a freezing cold morning. OTPOR had been in existence for three months, and we’d gathered enough supporters and enough clout to stage a small protest down the road from Republic Square. I never got there. As I made my way to the meeting point, a few police officers jumped me and dragged me off to a piss-soaked jail cell just a few minutes’ walk away, where they had their fun beating me to a pulp for what seemed like an eternity. Luckily, the thick layers of sweaters I was wearing cushioned some of the blows from their heavy boots. Eventually, the police let me go, but only after one of the cops shoved his gun into my mouth and told me he wished we were in Iraq so that he could just kill me right there.

The Egyptians perked up. This talk of beatings and guns reminded them of home, of Mubarak’s notoriously thuggish security forces. At least we Serbs had lived through similar stuff. One of the Egyptians was an intellectual, with a slim build and wire-framed glasses. Mubarak’s secret police had a special animosity toward students, and you could tell by the man’s response that he must have had similar interactions with the cops. Looking directly at him, then, I continued telling the story of OTPOR’s rise, and of how something unexpected started happening the more popular we became: the harder the police tried to scare us away from Republic Square, the more we kept coming back.

With OTPOR’s brand stronger than ever, our little demonstrations became the hottest parties in town; if you weren’t there, you might as well have kissed your social life goodbye. And none were cooler, naturally, than those who managed to get themselves arrested—being hauled off to jail meant you were daring and fearless, which, of course, meant you were sexy. Within weeks, even the nerdiest kids in town, the sort who wore pocket protectors and prided themselves on bringing their own graphing calculators to school, were being shoved into police cars one evening and scoring dates with the most attractive women in their class the next.

At this point in the story, I could sense my Egyptian friends’ silent skepticism, and so I stopped and asked the bespectacled intellectual if the same dynamic was true back home. Without hesitating, he said it wasn’t. In Cairo, he told me, speaking with authority, nobody would ever want to be on the wrong side of Mubarak’s secret police. He had a point: even Miloseˇvic´’s most brutal enforcer behaved like the tooth fairy compared to the guards in Mubarak’s jails. But there was a universal principle at work in Republic Square that I wanted to share, and it really didn’t have too much to do with whose secret police were nastier. What I wanted my Egyptian friends to understand was far more simple, and much more radical: I wanted them to understand comedy.

It’s common for people launching nonviolent movements to cite Gandhi, say, or Martin Luther King, Jr., as their inspiration, but those guys, for all their many, many virtues, simply weren’t that hilarious. If you’re hoping to get a mass movement going within a very short span of time in the age of the Internet and other distractions, humor is a key strategy. And so, walking slowly through Republic Square, I told the Egyptians about how OTPOR used a lot of street theater. We didn’t do anything too political, because politics is boring, and we wanted everything to be fun and, more important, funny. In the early days of OTPOR, I said, laughter was our greatest weapon against the regime. Miloseˇvic´’s dictatorship, after all, was fueled by fear: fear of our neighbors, fear of surveillance, fear of the police, fear of everything. But during our time of fear, we Serbs learned that fear is best fought with laughter, and if you don’t believe me, then try to think of the best way to reassure a friend who is about to be wheeled into an operating room for major surgery. If you act serious and concerned, his anxiety will spike. But if you crack a joke, suddenly he will relax, and maybe even smile. The same principle is true when it comes to movements.

How, then, to make something as harrowing as life under a despot funny? That’s the best part of starting a movement. Like our heroes, Monty Python, my friends and I put our heads together and struggled to come up with good, catchy bits of activism that would have the desired effect.

Practical ideas for changing the world peacefully
By Amazon Customer
Recent events in early 2015 have faded this blueprint, as peaceful revolution after peaceful revolution has had its initial success crushed, but the basics are sound and inspiring. There is inspiration for using humor and peaceful subversion to fight all sorts of repression. The tone is a little preachy at times, but the text is peppered with great anecdotes. The pitfalls and setbacks are discussed and analyzed, which is instructive. The importance of cooperation and compromise are not forgotten. In a world where it often feels as if one person can't do anything against the many injustices, this book raises a fist to say that one person -- with help -- actually can.

I am currently rereading Blueprint for Revolution because the very accessible nature of the prose lulls one into reading it the first time in an almost “drive by” fashion. However, as I came—all too quickly and with regret—to the end of it I realized that my first read had been way too cursory for the heft of the subject matter. This time I will fully savor the underlying analysis, the whys for the ingredients to successful change agency.

Wish it were longer and more detailed
By Rebecca Rachmany
Entertaining, gives excellent basics for someone interested in how to use nonviolent opposition to make major changes. I feel like the author could have done deeper research and given more examples, or in the examples show more detail from the start through the struggles of movements. I learned a lot, and it was incredibly uplifting and encouraging.

Amazon.com Review
Because it made possible rapid movement and shipping across large distances, joining far-off towns to economic and cultural capitals, many people who lived in the early 19th century regarded the railroad as an instrument of progress. Because anyone with the price of a ticket could board a train, regardless of social class, the railroad was also seen as a democratizing technology.

But, Wolfgang Schivelbusch notes in this vivid history of early rail travel, the promise of progress and democracy was swiftly compromised. The railroads became an agency for the concentration of wealth in a few hands, and they created a class of passive consumers who simply got aboard and waited to arrive at their destinations. The railroads, Schivelbusch writes, changed the 19th-century world for good and ill. They helped rewrite the industrializing world's sense of time, for now precise schedules had to be kept; they reinforced a sense of forward-plunging movement into the future; they even introduced the reality of mass disaster, for railroads were always crashing, sometimes taking hundreds of riders to their deaths.

Delving into urban planning, psychology, architecture, and economics, as well as the history of technology, Schivelbusch paints a revealing portrait of the role of the railroad in shaping the 19th-century mind. --Gregory McNamee

Review
This delightful, probing, and very quirky book is, surprisingly, a pioneering work in the sociology and psychopathology of the railway revolution. . . Whats more, its a gas. -- The Village Voice

Very Impressive
By G. Antonio
One of the greatest men in network marketing building an empire that both Prudential and New York Life combine is unable to match.

I bought over a hundred books just the last few months. I read a portion of each books for my references. But this is the book that I read from start to finish.

Wait till you read his chapter 10. It strikes me so hard that I decided to give the book to my friend and bought another one for my own copy.

That friend of mine flew from San Diego to Oklahoma to attend a convention last Wednesday. While we are on the airplane, one of the passengers was reading the same book. And I told him, you see that passenger over there reading that book? That's the book I got for you.

Steve G. - This book is for you. And chapter 10 is your greatest miracle.

All You Can Do is All That He Did!
By Sarah Garcia
What this man did for the public was truly remarkable. He revolutionized the life insurance industry. He gave people the ability to purchase a product that was life transforming for the beneficiaries left behind. Without his gusto and guts people would still be getting ripped off by those big insurance companies whose only goal was to get rich by bleeding the public with their insurance policies, that were loaded with fees and charges. It was a good product for the agent to sell and get a huge commission however it was not good for a widow with family to take care of.
They should make a movie of his life!

Because it was delivered reasonably on time. The only thing I would like to remark is that although the book is in good condition I was not advised that it was highlighted everywhere, which I have an issue with that because I don't do that and if I have to I would on some significant sentences that I consider to be important to me.

An Absorbing Story and Must Read!
By Melanie Marshall
Another Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.com Sammy review;

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

“This is my friend Ryan. He made pecan pie. I hope that’s okay with everyone?”

“I’m allergic to nuts,” Blake muttered. Or evidently said loudly enough for everyone to hear. Ryan snorted, Bianca glared, Matt looked like a confused puppy, and his mom gave him a questioning look and said, “Pecan is your favorite.”

“It’s a recent allergy,” Blake said weakly.

Ryan walked past him to set the pie on the counter and whispered, “Don’t worry. My nuts are hypoallergenic.”

Being a twin is special, and when Blake’s twin Bianca meets Matt and falls madly in love with him, it’s imperative that Blake approves. The thing is, Matt isn’t so bad. His friend, Ryan, on the other hand, is a completely different story.

Granted, they get off on the wrong foot – meaning that Ryan is pretty much foot in mouth. He can’t help himself, the stupid comments just keep pouring out.

Sometimes, though, foes make the best lovers, and Blake and Ryan teeter on the line of hate, to tolerance, to tolerating sleeping together because sex is about the only time they don’t drive each other mad. They decide to keep their arrangement a secret, and as with all secrets, things get mucked up when a secret becomes common knowledge.

Making Nice is a lot more than enemies becoming lovers, it extends to a relationship building between two people who are both equally flawed and live up close and personal with their worst enemies – themselves.

“I’m just saying, I guess—make sure you’re paying attention. Blake has a tendency, if he doesn’t think he can get what he wants, to take what he can get.”

Ryan forced a smile, though it felt like he’d just been insulted. “Which one am I, then? What he wants or what he can get?”

I was a bit nervous at first. This is a fairly long book and it’s a new author for me, but I loved the idea for the plot and went in with an open mind. Elizah Davis did not disappoint.

I’ve said before that one of the things I love is good banter between characters. I understand that it’s not something that should happen in every story, that’d get boring, but I just love it when an author can make characters duel with words and pull the reader into it. This was the case for Blake and Ryan. They truly had a banter that lasted even after their relationship progressed, and it made their relationship that much sweeter for me.

To a certain extent, the blurb really doesn’t do the story justice. It’s so much more than this hate-sex type of deal. The reason the story is the length it is, at least in my opinion, is because you get to see their relationship build. It’s not an automatic hate one day, love the next – they kind of fall into it. It’s a progression that you can visibly watch throughout the chapters.

I also enjoyed the side characters. There were a decent number of them, but I never got mixed up on who was who or who had been told what. They had personality and life that added to the story for me. I do wish we’d gotten to hear more about Ryan’s family life, as most of it deals with Blake’s, but that was just something that would’ve been a nice addition.

I will say that the thing some people may struggle with here are communication issues – Ryan and Blake certainly have them. The reason it didn’t bother me in this story is because I saw it as a natural byproduct of their relationship and its roots, and also a growing pain that they needed to overcome. The author doesn’t make this a moot point though, and at one point outwardly acknowledges that communication is probably more beneficial for them. To me, their communication issues made sense, it worked.

Also, I really adore the cover art by Paul Richmond. It fits the story quite well, right down to the check list (with friends crossed out, which totally made me smile after reading the story).

A Must read
By Crystal's Many Reviewers
So many romances happen instantly these days. Within a week or a month, a couple is already to the I-do stage. I prefer books that make the relationship take time and grow. And this book definitely fits the bill.

Blake has some worries. His twin sister who is his best friend has fallen in love. And this just might be ‘the guy’. As she turns more and more toward Matt and shares less with him, his whole world shifts. Though not nessarily for the better. At poker night over at Matt’s house, he comes face to face with Ryan, who insults him at every turn.

Ryan doesn’t understand why every time he opens his mouth around Blake, something demeaning or rude pops out. He doesn’t do that! And yet, with Blake, he does. Every single time. One drunken night turns into the hottest sex either of them have had and next thing they know it, they set up booty calls, trying desperately to keep the information from Matt, Ryan’s best friend, almost brother, and Bianca, Blake’s twin. As Matt lives across the road from Ryan, the chances of keeping it quiet are nill, but they blunder on.

Until everyone finds out.

I loved this story. From Ryan’s unerring foot-in-mouth disease to Blake’s snarky comebacks to Ryan’s opinionated cat. The fact both of these men had no idea how to do a relationship and wanted it, but were afraid to say so, was very endearing, because I so know the feeling.

To me, the only part of the book I really didn’t like was Bianca. She came across as very self-involved and full of herself most of the time.

But that didn’t stop me from giving this 5 stars. I will definitely be rereading it and looking for more from this author.

Love and hate are both strong emotions. They are two authors often combine to make some pretty powerful stories. This is the exact scenario we find in Making Nice by Elizah J. Davis. Two men who couldn’t be more different or antagonistic to each other finding a common ground in lust and eventually finding more.

Some people love this dynamic. Some people hate it. For me, it is completely based on whether the author can make me believe the pairing. Davis is able to do just that.

We see two love stories in Making Nice. First, is the existing familial and twin bond between the main character Blake and his twin sister Bianca (no this is NOT twincest. They are best friends). We also watch the relationship between Blake and his future brother-in-law’s best friend, Ryan (and therein lies the enemies-to-lovers aspect).

This isn’t a sweet, everything’s perfect, let’s ride off into the sunset type story. Blake and Ryan mess up… repeatedly. They are guys who can’t communicate to save their lives. They are guys who don’t want to put themselves “out there” for potential hurt. They are guys who would rather be pissed than talk. However, I didn’t feel like I was reading about adolescents. I sort of felt like I was reading about how I handle conflict sometimes.

On the Blake and Biana front, we get to watch the evolution of family and friendship. We get to see their relationship strain and ultimately grow stronger.

I enjoyed the time I spent in Blake and Ryan’s world and would be happy to read more from this author.

PASSED WITH 86%!
By Amazon Customer
I had been waiting for this book for awhile, since there aren't any other good OCP 8 study guides on the market. When I finally got it, I read it cover-to-cover then took the 1Z0-809 exam and scored an 86%. The OCP 8 exam itself was *definitely* a lot harder than the OCA 8 exam, and had numerous subtleties. A question that appeared to be about threads might really be about polymorphism/method overriding, but I passed by more than 20% so I'm happy. The book was the sole reason I passed, especially the Review questions and online Exams. While the book's questions were tough, some of the exam questions I encountered were equally as difficult, so I felt very prepared.

Also... I did not study with any other online exam websites, as I found many of the OCP 8 practice exam websites to be buggy and use old/recycled/retired-style exam questions from OCP 7.

Definitely need to know streams, method references, JDBC well to pass. Thanks Jeanne & Scott! Another certification for my resume!

Passed OCP 8 with 84%!
By Amazon Customer
First off, the OCP 8 exam is so much harder than the OCA 8! I came in with very little knowledge of Java 8. This was my first time using lambdas and streams in any programming language. I was pleased with how this book presented the material, often in a humorous way. The book came with 3 online exams, which were difficult but made me feel quite prepared for the exam.

I studied solely using this book and passed the exam by nearly 20 points. I will warn people studying.. the exam is very nitpicky. The questions often include very methods that almost no one I know uses. In other words, you should probably read this book twice before taking the exam, as it is not easy.

This book is similar in style to the OCA book from the same authors. I found this book very easy to read with lots of examples and tips for what to focus on for the exam. Being an animal lover, I liked all the animal examples especially the appearance of a wolf in Chapter 4 (howlll). Using everyday objects and animals to relate examples made it easier to process and understand. I also liked the tips about programming. OCP seems a harder exam than OCA, so it will take more time, but this book I think would be well worth using.

Bouchon (The Thomas Keller Library), by Thomas Keller

Thomas Keller, chef/proprieter of Napa Valley's French Laundry, is passionate about bistro cooking. He believes fervently that the real art of cooking lies in elevating to excellence the simplest ingredients; that bistro cooking embodies at once a culinary ethos of generosity, economy, and simplicity; that the techniques at its foundation are profound, and the recipes at its heart have a powerful ability to nourish and please.

So enamored is he of this older, more casual type of cooking that he opened the restaurant Bouchon, right next door to the French Laundry, so he could satisfy a craving for a perfectly made quiche, or a gratinéed onion soup, or a simple but irresistible roasted chicken. Now Bouchon, the cookbook, embodies this cuisine in all its sublime simplicity.

But let's begin at the real beginning. For Keller, great cooking is all about the virtue of process and attention to detail. Even in the humblest dish, the extra thought is evident, which is why this food tastes so amazing: The onions for the onion soup are caramelized for five hours; lamb cheeks are used for the navarin; basic but essential refinements every step of the way make for the cleanest flavors, the brightest vegetables, the perfect balance—whether of fat to acid for a vinaigrette, of egg to liquid for a custard, of salt to meat for a duck confit.

Because versatility as a cook is achieved through learning foundations, Keller and Bouchon executive chef Jeff Cerciello illuminate all the key points of technique along the way: how a two-inch ring makes for a perfect quiche; how to recognize the right hazelnut brown for a brown butter sauce; how far to caramelize sugar for different uses.

But learning and refinement aside—oh those recipes! Steamed mussels with saffron, bourride, trout grenobloise with its parsley, lemon, and croutons; steak frites, beef bourguignon, chicken in the pot—all exquisitely crafted. And those immortal desserts: the tarte Tatin, the chocolate mousse, the lemon tart, the profiteroles with chocolate sauce. In Bouchon, you get to experience them in impeccably realized form.

This is a book to cherish, with its alluring mix of recipes and the author's knowledge, warmth, and wit: "I find this a hopeful time for the pig," says Keller about our yearning for the flavor that has been bred out of pork. So let your imagination transport you back to the burnished warmth of an old-fashioned French bistro, pull up a stool to the zinc bar or slide into a banquette, and treat yourself to truly great preparations that have not just withstood the vagaries of fashion, but have improved with time. Welcome to Bouchon.

Amazon.com Review
Bouchon, chef Thomas Keller's bistro cookbook, offers 180-plus recipes from his eponymous restaurants--there are two. Readers perusing the near-prosciutto-size book will be dazzled, first, by its great looks (there are many beautiful photos), then, perhaps, wonder why so many of its typically homey bistro dishes are so fussy to prepare. Why, for example, must the onions for onion soup be caramelized for five hours, or the muscles of a leg of lamb separated so that each can be cooked to an exact, presumably optimal, temperature.

They should, however, trust this justly celebrated chef, whose sometimes-painstaking refinements reflect a better way. Apart from the excellence of the dishes, the reason to own Bouchon is to discover the richness of Keller's technical understanding. Readers learn, for example, not to baste chicken while it roasts, which creates skin-softening moisture, and to allow the base for crème caramel to sit before baking, thus permitting its flavors to deepen. Keller's sensitivity to ingredients and their composition is profound; and he and his collaborators have presented it so deftly that one finds oneself engrossed again and again. Whether Keller is talking about vinaigrettes (in their balance of fat, acid, and saltines, the perfect sauce) vegetable glazing, or the creation of brown butter, his insights are fascinating.

The dishes cover a wide range of courses, and include the traditional--poule au pot, veal roast, pommes frites, and so on--and the "new," such as Gnocchi with Summer Vegetables, Skate with Fennel-Onion Confit and Tapenade Sauce, and Grandma Sheila's Cheesecake Tart with Huckleberries. All are, as the French might say, impeccable--and can be accomplished by anyone willing to take the time to do so. Like his cooking, Bouchon is a sui generis treat. --Arthur Boehm

From Publishers Weekly
Keller's restaurant Bouchon, in Napa Valley, Calif., is modeled after Parisian bistros and serves simple yet sumptuous fare. This graceful ode to bistro cooking emphasizes that although in America, "bistro" is synonymous with "casual," the food is prepared with "precision of technique brought to bear on ordinary ingredients." Close-up photos of signature dishes are alluring, and several action shots of food preparation may help readers refine their techniques. The book's sections progress from "First Impressions" (hors d'oeuvres and more) to "Anytime" dishes (soups, salads, quiches) to appetizers, entrées and desserts. Thoughtful introductions to each recipe grouping explain Keller's experiences with the featured dishes; sidebars on everything from oil to onions provide insight and useful tidbits. A "Basics" chapter attempts to further demystify the foundations of bistro cooking (it's built on staples like confit, stock and aioli), and a "Sources" section directs readers to bistro-appropriate tools and specialty foods. Of course, as any chef knows, food is as much about experience, memory and emotion as it is about flavor and presentation. Especially bistro food, Keller says, which retains the "spirit of the original bistro, the spirit of embracing you... restoring you and making you happy." This appealing book promises to do the same. From Booklist
Keller holds the chef-of-the-moment title. It's still nearly impossible to book a table in his renowned French Laundry restaurant in rural California even though the chef himself has largely forsaken the scene to open an eagerly awaited luxe Manhattan eatery. This new cookbook takes its title from Keller's less expensive bistro next door to his California location. At Bouchon he and his kitchen staff concentrate on bistro classics: onion soup, roast chicken, tarte tatin. Onion soup relies on sound beef stock and well-caramelized onions. For his roast chicken, Keller looks for a farm-raised bird, properly cleaned and dried with a bit of butter, salt, and pepper. Unlike other chefs, Keller opts for trussing the chicken for even cooking and easy handling. He extols the French art of potted meats, but offers just a few pates. Pigs' feet put in an appearance and add their rich rustic savor to the menu. Other recipes for salads, vegetables, and desserts follow a similar pattern of exquisite ingredients simply prepared. Masterful Reference on Bistro Recipes. Highly Recommended
By B. Marold
Expectations for Thomas Keller's new book `Bouchon' are very high, and I firmly believe he has exceeded them. The book sets new standards for the foodie coffee table fare as well as confirming Keller's reputation as one of the country's foremost culinary artists. The book is larger, heavier, and better than his first cookbook on the cuisine of his flagship French Laundry. There are several things that make this an excellent book for all people who love to cook.

First, the book is a superior reference work of bistro dishes and how to prepare them. It is certainly not complete, but then I think no cookbook in the world will ever be a complete reference to any subject, as every culinary subject changes daily due to changes in provisions, historical research, and the enormous variety in how even one dish is made from place to place. For example, both `Bouchon' and Tony Bourdain's recent book on bistro recipes from Les Halle has five (5) dishes containing mussels, yet no two are the same dish. For all of the virtues of Bourdain's book, Keller's book is superior as a reference to the overall style of cooking if only because he and his editors rigorously give both French and English names to all dishes.

Second, as amazing as it is to say this, lots of dishes in `Bouchon' are actually easy to make. The initial roast chicken recipe is literally not much more complicated than carefully prepping the carcass and sticking it into the oven. Keller does not even baste the beast and it is done within an hour (for a 3-pound bird). And, all this with the cachet of making a Thomas Keller recipe. Almost all the salads and `openers' dishes are equally as simple, as long as you have high quality ingredients.

Third, the pantry chapter of recipes is a more complete reference for making stocks and other sauce bases than I have seen anywhere else. My former gold standard for stockmaking recipes was in `The Zuni Café Cookbook' by Judy Rodgers. This is better by giving recipes that are just as good, better written, and a more complete collection of stocks than I have seen anywhere else. The only thing I would possibly add to this chapter would be a recipe for a court bouillon. But, the recipe does appear in the book as a part of the recipe for a shellfish platter. Other sauces such as a mignonette sauce and a cocktail sauce also appear `in situ' along with appropriate dishes with which they are used.

Fourth, the book is simply packed with important culinary techniques. Most of these are not the sort of thing which will find their way to the quick tips pages of `Cooks Illustrated' or `Gourmet' as they are not shortcuts, but more painstaking ways to improve what is probably already an excellent dish. One dramatic example is Keller's twist on braising where he segregates his flavoring vegetables at the bottom of the Dutch oven under a layer of cheesecloth before adding the meat and the broth. In this way, it becomes very easy to remove the finished meat from the veg and retrieve the broth with little or no odd floating bits of celery leaf or thyme branch. A more simple technique is the recommendation to transfer finished stock to the filtering device with a ladle rather than simply pouring the stuff into the chinois. The force of the uncontrolled flow will force some unwanted particles into the filtered stock. It is all about little details piled up upon one another, which separates good from great cooking.

Fifth, Keller's interpretation of bistro cooking is uncompromising. One dramatic example of this is his claim that America has forgotten how to make a proper quiche, if it ever did know in the first place. The cardinal sin is to make a quiche in a pie pan. This is no surprise, as Julia Child in `Mastering the Art of French Cooking' gives the same warning. What is more surprising is that while most Americans probably use a tart pan with sides of no more than an inch and Child recommends a flan or cake pan with sides up to 11/2 inches, Keller states that you need a 2 inch tall pan to make a proper quiche. A more subtle difference is in his technique for preparing his pate brisee. Virtually every pie crust recipes I have ever seen calls for cutting in butter to leave lentil-sized bits of butter in the mix. Keller insists this is a mistake for a quiche with a wet custard filling, as the pockets of butter create weaknesses in the dough that may break through before the custard filling has firmed up.

Although the book contains many simple recipes, there are also many classic recipes such as boeuf bourguignon, which are literally essays in classic French cooking. Tony Bourdain's recipe for boeuf bourguignon requires 10 ingredients and two concise paragraphs to describe the method. Keller's recipe calls for 43 ingredients in 5 different component preparations, not including the veal stock preparation. This recipe is the poster boy for Keller's take on bistro cooking, which is technique and constant refinement by filtering, skimming, and straining. While the authors have been painstaking in translating the professional's practiced eye and nose into English, this cooking is still about constant attention to the state of the dish as it cooks, and of recognizing the right time to move from one stage to the other. It is this dish where if Bourdain did it at the French Laundry his way, he would be fired on the spot.

This book is so large that it will probably be unwieldy to cook from in the kitchen. Open, it is large than two of my cutting boards together. Still, I cannot overstate how valuable this book is to someone who loves to cook and to read about cooking.

Very highly recommended.

This is my favorite cookbook by a mile or two

This is my favorite cookbook by a mile or two. Sure, the recipes for "simple" and traditional cuisine are a bit more complex than one might desire (I personally like the complexity and detail in the recipes), but that is the genius of this work...the final products are sensational and exactly as described (and expected). A masterpiece! To think that bistro food is basically peasant food makes this volume that much more special.

The book itself is physically beautiful, an impressive achievement

For those for whom French cooking of any type is important, Thomas Keller's Bouchon is a revelation. It is a new introduction to taking essentially ordinary food to extraordinary heights. The book itself is physically beautiful, an impressive achievement, but the best part is the way it introduces us to new insights and techniques to make us better cooks.
