About the Author
Martin McDonagh was born in London and has since worked as a playwright, screenwriter and film director. His first play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, was nominated for six Tony awards, of which it won four, and the Laurence Olivier Award. In 2003, his play The Pillowman had its world premiere at the Royal National Theatre and received the 2004 Olivier Award. In 2006, Martin McDonagh won an Oscar for his short film Six Shooter. His most recent works include, A Behanding in Spokane, The Guard and Seven Psychopaths.

Same womb as Lt. of Inishmore, different baby.

From the same writer as Lieutenant of Inishmore, McDonagh brings a hell of an English ride to the stage.

Generating the same crazy premises as well as the addicting dialogue, McDonagh hooks you and doesn't let you go until the end. Just like LoI, it's a roller coaster, but I think his themes are more identifiable and the message is clear; the justice system, wherever you go, doesn't really care.

The dialogue makes you cringe while laughing and leaves you gripping the corner of the book at times, the author has always had this effect on his readers (and viewers when it's produced into a play) and Hangmen is no exception. The pacing is (I don't use this word lightly) phenomenal. The message satirical but is built with more than a few layers of truth.

The only con to this play is that you'll be left wanted more by the end.

The latest from one of the two Irish playwrights/trailblazers, this play is HILARIOUS. Forgive the pun, but it it's uproarious GALLOWS HUMOR. I love this man's work, and can't wait to see it performed. It's a blast to read!

Helpful and easy to learn from

Very informative and sophisticated approach to successfully taking the HESI. The book is written in a very detailed way but also in a format that is easy to understand with information that is easy to retain (if using the book's methodology correctly). The book literally covers everything about it and answered many of my questions that I had, it definitely relieved me of much apprehension about taking the test and I know I will do much better now that I am much more informed due to reading this. There are a lot of great test taking tips and techniques and I found many things that I haven't seen in the 2 previous HESI books that I had read before this, it definitely stands out to me and went way above and beyond my expectations

The biggest help you could ever get!

I was so scared to take the HESI. I have to pass the test since this is my future. So I definitely searched for something that could help me be more than prepared for the test. I didn't just want to prepare I wanted to pass with flying colors. So when I found the HESI A2 Secrets study guide I felt at ease about this test. I was able to use this book to the maximum benefits because it's set up for anyone to understand. It made understanding the information so much easier. When you have that confidence in the knowledge that you have you can take a test with much more confidence. The material in this guide is easy to digest. It covers all the necessities that are actually going to be on the test. Talk about saving you a lot of trouble. That's the most deterring part about studying. Learning all this information, and then it's not even on the test. So this guide really concentrated on what I needed to know to pass this test. This study guide is affordable, and absolutely useful. I would recommend it to anyone who needs to pass this test. This is the best investment that you can make in your future. Using this guide is certainly going to give you an edge that will make you be successful in the end.

I was very satisfied with this e-book! I applied to a nursing school and found out that I needed to take the A2 within 10 days of applying. I needed a study guide right away, and ordering an actual book was not an option for me. I couldn't afford to pay the extra money to have it shipped overnight. I ordered the e-book and it went directly to my computer. I started studying the same day I schedule my test date. This study guide was extremely helpful, and without it I don't think I would have passed the A2 with such a good score. I passed it with an above average score the first (and only) time that I took it, surpassing the school's average score, which was lower than the score that was needed to qualify students for admission consideration. About the Author
Dr. Andrew Wiest was born in Chicago, but raised in Hattiesburg. After attending the University of Southern Mississippi for his undergraduate and masters degrees, Dr. Wiest went on to receive his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Chicago in 1990. Specializing in the study of World War I and Vietnam, Dr. Wiest has served as a Visiting Senior Lecturer at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in the United Kingdom and as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Warfighting Strategy in the United States Air Force Air War College. Since 1992 Dr. Wiest has been active in international education, leading a study abroad program on World War II to London and Normandy each summer, and developing the award-winning Vietnam Study Abroad Program. Dr. Wiest lives in Hattiesburg with his wife Jill and their two children Abigail and Luke.

Chris McNab is a writer and editor based in South Wales, UK. He has produced over 25 books on military history, martial arts, survival, and other topics, and has written extensively on firearms, his titles including: Weapons of War: AK47, 20th Century Small Arms, The Encyclopedia of Combat Techniques, Living off the Land, and The Illustrated History of the Vietnam War. Chris is a lifelong advocate of shooting sports and specializes in sporting clays and field shooting around the UK and abroad.

The American Vietnam War in one book...

The best general account of our war in Vietnam that I have read. I recommend it without reservation. Excellent photographs, most of which I have not seen elsewhere, and a surprisingly low price. I served as an infantryman in Vietnam, and I am gratified to find an even-handed and understanding narrative by two noted military writers. Thank you, Dr. McNab and Dr. Wiest!

Mediocre

I was let down by this book which I purchased thinking that it will contain new information and unpublished photographs. Neither is true: the text is very poor in hard data, the chapters are too short, the maps average and most of the photographs have been published many times over the years. The serious student of the Vietnam War should better spent his or her money in the old but excellent multi-volume series of Boston Publishing "The Vietnam Experience" to get a wealth of photos and the analysis also. As far as the strategy of Vietnam War is concerned, Palmer's "Summon of the Trumpets" is unsurpassed.

They say no mourners, but I'm mourning. I'm mourning that this duology is over. I adored the first book, but the with the addition of the second, the two paired go up in my list of ABSOLUTE PERFECT BOOKS EVAR (which, Ima be honest with you, is kind of hard to get into. The Raven Boys is in there. Harry Potter is in there. You know what's not? The Hunger Games trilogy or even the author's first set of work, the Grisha Trilogy. SCANDALOUS)

This was so delicious. It was. Fulfilling, never disappointing, it whetted my appetite for a last job/heist story and satisfied with the level of a Shawshank Redemption-style smack down. It gave me spine-shiveringly-fingers-grazing-slightly-hungrily romantic moments, sweet first love moments, hungry lip-devouring moments. It gave me moments where I wanted to fist pump the hell out of every character, and then clutch them to my chest.and make soothing crooning moments.I read the entire thing in 6 hours. Then I re-read the ending. Multiple times. Tears and shivers and laughing and crying all at the same time. Every time.

I CANNOT ENUNCIATE ENOUGH MY APPRECIATION FOR THIS BOOK. I literally gasped at the presentation of one character who I didn't see coming (literally or figuratively) but was so delighted at the brilliance of the author's move. Everything fit. A perfect puzzle of a story that comes to the most resounding satisfying snap at the ending. I AM NOT KIDDING. BUY THIS BOOK. Actually, buy Six of Crows first, devour that (if you have't) and then BUY THIS BOOK. And if you're like me, voraciously devour it. Then as soon as you hit the ending, immediately go back and start re-reading, because you know you've missed details the first time around because the pacing of the story wouldn't allow you to slow down and appreciate the nuances. That's what 2nd readings are for. And 3rd. AND CAN I GET A HALLELUJAH FOR NO LOVE TRIANGLES?!!!?!!?! (THAT didn't count. IT doesn't count. I'm not counting IT.)

Thank you Leigh Bardugo, for this duology. Thank you for adding to my miserly BEST READS EVAR pile. Thank you for Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Wylan, Nina, Matthias, Sprecht, Rotty and every other brilliant character you've made so readable and loveable/hateable.

Although, could someone please help me out? Most of the lands are pretty obviously references to real life places. Can I get an assist on Novyi Zem? I know I should be able to figure it out - I feel like it staring at me RIGHT IN THE FACE, not mad, just....disappointed.

Crooked Kingdom was the book I was most looking forward to reading this year. The depth and edge-of-your-seat suspense that Leigh Bardugo delivered in Six of Crows was nearly absent in Crooked Kingdom. Uneven pacing and lack of character growth was Crooked Kingdom's downfall.

Kaz and the dearly beloved gang of misfits are back in Crooked Kingdom minus one of their own. After they band together to claim back their missing member, they scheme to take down the Barrel's crooked businessmen, Jan Van Eck and Pekka Rollins. But outsmarting these ruthless men isn't easy when their plans are thwarted at every turn.

Until this book, all of Leigh Bardugo's novel had exquisitely paced and beautifully crafted story arcs with fully developed and fully realized characters. I really wanted to love this book as much as I have loved her previous novels, but I couldn't because it was just not good. I have so many things I want to say to explain my feelings, I don't even know where to start. I'm going to point out some of the bigger problems I have.

Uneven pacing and lack of plot cohesiveness

Crooked Kingdom took a long time to get going. While it was fun to be back in the lives of a cast of characters I've grown immensely fond of, it took more than a third of the book to pass before things got interesting. Even as I read further in the book, there was very little plot action that I could grasp on to and get excited about.

In the last book, the focus was on breaking into an impenetrable prison, a plot point that lends itself to some pretty exciting stuff. There was a clear path and goal in the distance for the reader to see that was suspenseful and there was a sense that it was building to something great.

If Crooked Kingdom were a pair of pants, they would be made of several patches of mismatched pieced-together fabric. There was no tangible objective in mind. In fact, the plot here felt very piecemeal and patched together. As soon as the gang would achieve one goal, they were onto something else. It felt very unnatural and had a feel of "and then we're doing this and then we're doing this and then we're doing this" rather than "we are doing this to achieve this final goal" (which was what Six of Crows felt like). The whole book felt very unfocused and scattered: Is messing with the sugar the goal? The auction? The ships coming to and from the port? The moth-people Shu?

Transitions were jarring

The chapter transitions and shifts in point of view in Six of Crows flowed beautifully and were virtually seamless. They felt natural and were conducive to the story's thrilling nature. The same cannot be said of the transitions in Crooked Kingdom. With each chapter change it was like the plot would take one step forward and two steps back. These shifts often would go back in time and then lead the reader back to where the previous chapter left off. This only served to stall the plot more and felt incredibly jarring.

The multiple plot conveniences were really annoying.

Kaz's modus operandi is never revealing his whole plan to anyone, feeding details to his gang on a need-to-know basis. He was constantly one step ahead of his gang and his enemies. But it got really old really fast when he was winning and pulling one over on everyone every single time. It was especially irritating when these grandiose plans seemed to be written in after the fact, serving merely as plot conveniences. It just amounted to lazy storytelling. Others may have found these revelations to be wonderful "plot twists," but it only made me more frustrated with the direction of the story.

Kaz's character shows little vulnerability or weakness

Kaz's character is one of the highlights of this duology. Bardugo crafted his character with so much depth and room for change and growth. Outside of his vulnerability around Inej, he was invincible and it didn't make him seem like a real person.

I don't know how many of you watch The Walking Dead, but I was hoping for a Rick/Negan moment where Kaz is just stripped bare of his arrogance and sure-footedness. I thought for sure there would be a scene in this book where one of Kaz's plans and cons would go terribly wrong, where he didn't have a plan. But that never happened, which was disappointing.

Lack of tension and character development

In Six of Crows, Bardugo had so much to build on and work with, like introducing the reader to the characters, developing them and crafting the complicated relationships. There was so much wonderful tension that moved the plot forward with great characters, outside of the prison break-in plotline. There was very little development of these characters in Crooked Kingdom, aside from what was already accomplished in the previous book.

The tension between Nina and Matthias was gone because they were together now, so some new tension needed to be manufactured. Cue Nina's drug addict storyline. Her struggles with jurda parem only appeared when it was convenient and she was magically okay in other moments. To drum up some more tension between these two, the author really played up Matthias's rigid adherence to following the rules of his country, but it felt forced.

Focus on uninteresting characters

Personally, out of all the characters in Six of Crows, Jesper and Wylan were my least favorite. I didn't dislike them, but I didn't feel like they were as compelling. Outside of what we already knew, I wasn't interested in spending much time with them outside of what was necessary to move the plot forward in Crooked Kingdom.

But what we got in this book was a lot of page time with both of them. The budding attraction between Jesper and Wylan was something Bardugo took and ran with in this book. But I felt nothing between them. Their chapters were so long and frequent that I just became bored.

The one-liners: Can you not?

I love good banter and humor. That's one of the things I loved about Sturmhond in Siege and Storm : he was the comedic relief in the midst of danger and possible death. But the constant quipping and zingers spewing from Kaz and Jesper quickly became monotonous and not funny.

If Jesper making Wylan blush were a drinking game, I'd be blacked-out drunk by 45%. Also, there was a scene towards the end of the book that was meant to be incredibly emotional, yet Nina is making jokes? No, just no.

The way things ended...

I really didn't like the way the book ended. This is the final book in the duology and the author chose to end it through the eyes of a character the reader doesn't like. I wish we could have gotten more finality with one of our beloved Dregs but Pekka Rollins? No, thank you.

Final thoughts

There were some enjoyable moments peppered throughout the book. The bathroom scene with Kaz is arguably the best scene in the whole book, heavy with feeling and so many unspoken words. I also really liked the Inej chapter in the beginning where she ponders her value to Kaz. But these few moments weren't enough to get me to where I could say, "I liked this book."

Many readers may have enjoyed the cameos from characters from the Grisha trilogy. But really, they served little purpose to the overall story and felt like the author was just trying to win over readers' favor.

I've been very vocal about my genuine enthusiasm over this release. I kept my expectations in check. But considering I've read and loved her four previous novels, I truly thought I would enjoy this book. Crooked Kingdom wasn't the worst book ever; it just wasn't good. I hold Leigh Bardugo to a very high standard, as I've seen what she's capable of. She's an immensely gifted writer and storyteller. Crooked Kingdom was a far cry from what it could have been, and I'm so sad!

Audiobook Comments:

I switched back and forth between the book and the audiobook. I listened to the audiobook for probably the last third. Since I found this book to be extremely slow, the narrators' performances made me feel a little more interested in the book. Elizabeth Evans's narration of Nina's chapters was exceptional, my favorite of all the narrators. I didn't like the narrator for Wylan at all, and his voice for Kaz was almost laughable.

"A Battle for Revenge and Redemption"

First of all, if you’re reading this review and you haven’t read Six of Crows, go read that immediately.

Opening this book and starting to read was like seeing a friend you haven’t seen in a while. I did a reread of Six of Crows a few weeks ago and I remembered just how much I loved every single one of the characters. The character development in this book was absolutely phenomenal. The characters questioned what they thought they knew about themselves and their limitations and each of them grew an enormous amount this book. Some of the moments were absolutely heartbreaking and some made me smile.

Even though this is a fantasy series, there are many parallels between the problems experienced by the characters and real-life. Leigh Bardugo addresses everything from a change in faith, whether in a god or a loved one, to mental illness to physical disabilities. Part of what makes her characters so incredible is that, even though they have these fantastical skills, they are ultimately relatable as human beings. It’s incredibly rare that I’m unable to pick a favorite character in a book but after reading Crooked Kingdom, I can’t pick any one character in the crew (except Kuwei, I’m not a huge fan of his) as my favorite. The crew is a family and each character brings something crucial to the group and to the story.

As for the plot itself, just wow. Hold on tight, you’re in for a wild ride. If you enjoyed the heist aspect of Six of Crows, this book is essentially how the team pulled off the ultimate con. I was constantly guessing and in suspense as to what the next move would be. While Six of Crows was more focused on action, this book was more about getting into the mind of your enemy. Seeing everything unfold was like seeing two chess masters face off, albeit with a lot more tension and suspense.

I cannot recommend this book enough. I’m not quite ready to say goodbye to these characters and their world just yet so I’ll be hoping for more novels from Leigh Bardugo in the future. I’ll leave you with a quote from the book that I believe sums up the duology perfectly while demonstrating the difference between this series and the original Grisha trilogy.

“But what about the rest of us? What about the nobodies and the nothings, the invisible girls? We learn to hold our heads as if we wear crowns. We learn to wring magic from the ordinary….When the world owed you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway.”

About the Author
John Green lives and works in Sydney, Australia, as an independent computer consultant, specializing in Excel and Access. He has 35 years of computing experience, a Chemical Engineering degree, and an MBA.
He wrote his first programs in FORTRAN, took a part in the evolution of specialized planning languages on mainframes and, in the early ‘80s, became interested in spreadsheet systems, including 1-2-3 and Excel.
John established his company, Execuplan Consulting, in 1980, specializing in developing computerbased planning applications and in training. He has led training seminars for software applications and operating systems both in Australia and overseas.
John has had regular columns in a number of Australian magazines and has contributed chapters to a number of books including Excel Expert Solutions and Using Visual Basic for Applications 5. He also co-authored Professional Excel Development with Stephen Bullen and Rob Bovey.
From 1995 to 2005 he was accorded the status of MVP (Most Valuable Professional) by Microsoft for his contributions to the CompuServe Excel forum and MS Internet newsgroups.
John Green contributed the Introduction, Chapters 1–11, 13, 15–17, and 19 to this book.

Stephen Bullen lives in Woodford Green, London, England, with his partner Clare, daughter Becky, and their dogs, Fluffy and Charlie. He has two other daughters, Jane and Katie, from his first marriage.
A graduate of Oxford University, Stephen has an MA in Engineering, Economics, and Management, providing a unique blend of both business and technical skills. He has been providing Excel consulting and application development services since 1994, originally as an employee of Price Waterhouse Management Consultants and later as an independent consultant trading under the names of Business Modelling Solutions Limited and Office Automation Limited. Stephen now works for Barclays Capital in London, developing trading systems for complex exotic derivative products.

It's called a Programmer's Reference, but it's not

Programming books usually take one of three approaches. It either assumes you know absolutely nothing and gives you a very exhaustive history of not only the subject at hand, but programming in general. Or, the book is written "cookbook" style. Finally, some programming books are written as reference books.

This book claims to be a reference book, but it's not. As someone who's programmed for over a decade in a ton of languages and just had to learn enough to get this project done, I wanted a reference book so that I could say, "how do you write an 'if' statement?" "What's the syntax for logical operators in this language?" Stuff like that. You will find *none* of that in this book's index or table of contents.

For example, I had to write a simply if block. if ((condition A) and (condition B) Then 'Do something

I didn't know if the "and" was supposed to be && or AND or something else. So I looked up "logical operators" in the index. Nothing. So I then looked up just "operators". Nothing! Google to the rescue!

I needed to know how to increment a variable. In many languages (Perl, C/C++, PHP), if you have a variable named x, incrementing it would be as simple as x++. I may be wrong, but it doesn't appear that can be done in VBA and you'd have to do x = x + 1. It would be nice if there was a section quickly explaining this stuff.

There are a TON of examples such as this. For example, the books talks about functions. None of the examples, however, show you how to return a value from a function. The syntax is different than in most other languages, so it should at least be given a small mention. Again, google to the rescue!

In some cases, although you can't find it in the table of contents or the index, it *is* in the book. Of course, this then forces you to just aimlessly search from page to page trying to find what you need. For this project I'm doing, because I know nothing of this new language every page teaches me something I didn't know. So I found myself putting post it notes on pages. "Well, I'll need this bit of information to finish this project so let me just bookmark it. Right now, however, I'm looking for X and I still can't find that."

Listen, there is information in there and if you know nothing of VBA, you'll get something from this book (the only reason why I didn't give it 1 star). However, I bought it specifically because it said it was a reference. When I want to know the answer to something, I want a concise, quick way to look up how to do it so that I can move on. Unix Powertools is the PERFECT example of such a book and is probably the best cross-referenced book I ever read. In the end, I should have just saved my money and used google. I'll be returning this book.

Perfect for the impatient programmer who needs to pick up Excel VBA

This is the best book I've found to quickly learn Excel VBA. I am an experienced programmer but I had no knowledge of VBA before reading this book. The book gives instant gratification with useful samples that are easily adapted. It teaches by example and still manages to get general and useful techniques across. In short, for my purpose (quickly picking up Excel VBA without getting terribly bored), this book is perfect.

Key pieces missing

I book this WROX book sight unseen, but after having read these reviews and owning many other WROX books. The immediate trigger for buying was having some of my Excel 2003 macros stop working in Excel 2007 due to the change in color scheme. This book is silent on the new color scheme. On the other hand, "Excel 2007 Power Programming with VBA (Mr. Spreadsheet's Bookshelf)" deals with this issue in depth, so I bought this reference also, and would recommend it over the WROX book. Mr Spreadsheet's book has saved my bacon.

The WROX book doesn't handle the translation of Excel 2003 "lists" to Excel 2007 "tables" completely. I would have liked more info on Structured References, which have the potential to make "tables" actually useful.
