Bought this book for myself since i am a Veterinary Medicine student. The book is THE book, I absolutely love it. It is very easy to understand and read, it is absolutely a MUST. I live in Uruguay which is a spanish speaking country, so most people have this book in spanish (4th edition), and in the Unis Library its also in spanish, but to anyone considering to buy this book, if you are familiar with english, please do consider buying the original language version (english)!!! its soooooo worth it and this 5edition is really really beautiful!

When Africa makes international news, it is usually because war has broken out or some bizarre natural disaster has taken a large number of lives. Westerners are appallingly ignorant of Africa otherwise, a condition that the great Polish journalist and writer Ryszard Kapuœciñski helps remedy with this book based on observations gathered over more than four decades.

Kapuœciñski first went to Africa in 1957, a time pregnant with possibilities as one country after another declared independence from the European colonial powers. Those powers, he writes, had "crammed the approximately ten thousand kingdoms, federations, and stateless but independent tribal associations that existed on this continent in the middle of the nineteenth century within the borders of barely forty colonies." When independence came, old interethnic rivalries, long suppressed, bubbled up to the surface, and the continent was consumed in little wars of obscure origin, from caste-based massacres in Rwanda and ideological conflicts in Ethiopia to hit-and-run skirmishes among Tuaregs and Bantus on the edge of the Sahara. With independence, too, came the warlords, whose power across the continent derives from the control of food, water, and other life-and-death resources, and whose struggles among one another fuel the continent's seemingly endless civil wars. When the warlords "decide that everything worthy of plunder has been extracted," Kapuœciñski writes, wearily, they call a peace conference and are rewarded with credits and loans from the First World, which makes them richer and more powerful than ever, "because you can get significantly more from the World Bank than from your own starving kinsmen."

Colorful writing and a deep intelligence highlight these essays' graceful exploration of postcolonial Africa. A Polish journalist who has written about the continent for more than three decades, Kapuscinski provides glimpses into African life far beyond what has been covered in headlines or in most previous books on the subject. The dispatches focus on the awkward relationship between Europe and Africa. Kapuscinski, whose books have been translated into 19 languages (they include The Emperor and The Soccer War), makes this clear through his own personal struggle with malaria soon after he first arrived on the continent. This emphasis also comes through in his dispatches on African nations such as Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania and Rwanda, which detail how the giddy optimism of the immediate postcolonial era disintegrated into corruption, poverty and conflict. But even as he describes a familiar story, his keen observations make it fresh. Writing about the provincialism of Rwanda, he says, "A trip round the world is a journey from backwater to backwater, each of which considers itself... a shining star." But political observations are just one of the strengths of this book. Sympathetic, Savvy, Simply Magnificent

"Oh, no," you may be thinking, "another 'I Found Africa...' book" by a white journalist who's poked around a bit, extruded the steamy and the exotic, romanticized this, excoriated that, along the way raised a few primoridial terrors to jolt his well-meaning liberal readers, and all in all, told a few ripping yarns.
This man is different, beginning with his more than forty year relationship with the African continent. Great writers like Kapucinski--and he IS a very great writer, assisted by a great translator, Klara Glowczewska--teach us how to see, how to find the right context, how to set out the proper perspective. Most of those who read this book will be Westerners in search of a window. As an introduction, as an intimation of the myriads of Africas--because, as Kapucinski freely acknowledges, it's unfair, and somewhat insulting, to speak simply of "Africa"--and, yes, as an interpretation for Western minds, readers could do no better than The Shadow of the Sun.
For all his his vivid prose and artistic control of story elements, Kapucinski is a scholarly observer, a man who sees through the deep ice, seemingly an anthropologist refitted as a journalist--his eye is uncanny, his descriptive powers precise and powerful, and his range of experiences and depth of understanding makes this a uniquely valuable tutorial. He writes with clarity and fresh insight on familiar topics like Amin, Sudan, and the Rwanda genocide--his "lecture" on the events of 1994 is one of the book's many highpoints--but also on the sensations, struggles, and states of being that accompany the simple act of living in so challenging an array of environments as Africa's geography provides.
Yes, Kapucinski does include exotica, but without sensationalizing: there are harrowing encounters with flora, fauna, disease, the elements and, again and again, the terrible heat (which he finds as many ways of describing as the proverbial Inuit has of describing snow). But Kapucinski always returns to human dimensions and conditions and, above all, to the patterns and rhythms and variations of human exchange around which life in the many Africas organizes itself. And, always, he seeks to convey and to understand the point of view of his many interlocutors, rather than to make facile attributions or easy generalizations.
This is superb reportage and an essential document by a true master. It is to me staggering that, published by the same house as Robert Kaplan (of The Coming Anarchy fame) and sensitively covering the very turf that so alarmed Kaplan, Kapucinski remains comparatively unknown. Fix that.

Unique portrait of Africa's peoples and complexities

Ryszard Kapuscinski is a Polish reporter who has been covering Africa since 1957. Through the years, he's written six books about his experiences. This, his latest, is a collection of essays spanning more than four decades. Each can stand alone, and yet, together they form a unique portrait of Africa, its peoples, and the writer himself. From the initial enthusiasm in the 1950s when colonial power began to wane to the destruction of that dream and war and starvation, Mr. Kapuscinski sees it all. He keeps the reader right there with him too, and we share the heat and the dryness and the insects and even the malaria and tuberculosis that attack his body.
We all know that Africa is very different from the world we know, and in this book we learn just how different it is. We learn about the African's identity with his clan, we get a feeling of his sense of time and distance, and understand the joy of something as simple as a sip of water or a small shady spot under a tree. Always, there is heat, so oppressive that people walk slowly to conserve energy and do nothing but lie quietly during the hot burning heat of the day. It's the keenly observed details that bring it all to life. For example, the introduction of plastic containers for carrying water improved the lives of the people. Plastic containers are lighter and come in various sizes. Children can carry water now, thus freeing adult women from hours of work. Reading about this makes me thankful for the clean running water I take for granted. I also learned a lot about some of the raging wars. For the first time, I really understood what exactly the war was about in Rwanda and why so many people died. And his descriptions of the various governments in Liberia and the horrible in-fighting was very clear. I shuddered to read about so many murders in the places he came to know so well. And there were tears in my eyes reading about the starvation and the reasons for it. I'm deeply saddened too, because I see no easy answers.
The episodic nature of the book was both its strength and its weakness. It's true that I got an excellent overview. But the chapters skipped around, from place to place and covered a span of more than forty years. I would have preferred a more in-depth look at any one area. I understand though, that his other books are more focused in this way and I look forward to reading more of his work. I also wish he had included some maps as well as a few photographs. In spite of this, however, I do recommend this book. It really did deepen my understanding of this very complex continent.

About the Author

James R. Morris is Associate Professor in the Biology Department at Brandeis University. He teaches a wide variety of courses for majors and non-majors in evolution, genetics, genomics, anatomy, and health sciences. In addition, he teaches a first-year seminar focusing on Darwin’s On the Origin of Species. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards from Harvard and Brandeis. His research focuses on the rapidly growing field of epigenetics, making use of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism. He currently pursues this research with undergraduates in order to give them the opportunity to do genuine, laboratory-based research early in their scientific careers. Dr. Morris received a Ph.D. in genetics from Harvard University and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. In addition, he was a Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows at Harvard University, gave talks to the public on current science at the Museum of Science in Boston, and works on promoting public understanding of personal genetics and genomics.

Daniel L. Hartl is the Higgins Professor of Biology in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He has taught highly popular courses in genetics and evolution at the introductory and advanced levels. His lab studies molecular evolutionary genetics and population genetics and genomics. Dr. Hartl is the recipient of the Samuel Weiner Outstanding Scholar Award and the Medal of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohm Naples. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has served as President of the Genetics Society of America and President of the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution. Dr. Hartl’s Ph.D. was awarded by the University of Wisconsin, and he did post-doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to joining the Harvard faculty, he served on the faculties of the University of Minnesota, Purdue University, and Washington University Medical School. In addition to publishing more than 350 scientific articles, Dr. Hartl has authored or coauthored 30 books.

Andrew H. Knoll is the Fisher Professor of Natural History in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. He is also Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Dr. Knoll teaches introductory courses in both departments. His research focuses on the early evolution of life, Precambrian environmental history, and the interconnections between the two. He has also worked extensively on the early evolution of animals, mass extinction, and plant evolution. He currently serves on the science team for NASA’s mission to Mars. Dr. Knoll received the Phi Beta Kappa Book Award in Science for Life on a Young Planet. Other honors include the Paleontological Society Medal and Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society, London. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He received his Ph.D from Harvard University and then taught at Oberlin College before returning to Harvard.

Robert A. Lue is Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Director of Life Science Education at Harvard University. He regularly teaches in Harvard’s first-year Life Sciences program and upper-level courses in cell biology. He has a longstanding commitment to interdisciplinary teaching and research, and chaired the faculty committee that developed an integrated science course to serve multiple science majors and premedical students. Dr. Lue has also developed award-winning multimedia, including the animation “The Inner Life of the Cell.” He has coauthored undergraduate biology textbooks and chaired education conferences on college biology for the National Academies and the National Science Foundation, and diversity in science for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Institutes of Health. He also founded and directs a Harvard life sciences outreach program that serves over fifty high schools. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

I bought a biology book last semester and then this semester the department decided to switch to a new book. This is my last semester taking Biology and I was not going to pay full for a book I was only going to use for 18 weeks. Plus the renting price was great!.

Excellent book for anyone wants to get basic and fundamental information on epidemiology and study designs. This book provides useful formula and practical examples on how to measure outcomes, exposures, incidence of diseases, etc, and on how to control confounding in cohort and case-control studies. These formula and measurements are not usually well explained in the books I have read before.

Lance Has Been Called for These Times - Great Insight

I have followed Lance Wallnau for years and have considered him to be a prolific voice for an effective Kingdom culture. His perspective in this book forces people to step back and see the panorama of what may be going on in the unraveling of America. He rightly mentions the leaders of the past who we now hold in high regard, but Christians were not fond of in the present time. Trump is someone that you have to see with a unique lens. You have to at least consider what Lance is saying, as there is no question our whole country's future is at stake here.

Just disagreeing and doing nothing is not an answer if you disagree with this book. God always has a direction for the people of God. No one is saying Trump as a person is the answer to our nation's problems, but Lance has gleaned into something where he may be spot on. The whole system has been shaken by a man who has been willing to bring his tattered personal past into the picture, take the hits, but still press in for change. If you disagree with Lance's perspective, it would be awesome if you could reveal what your perspective of answers can be for this next season, beyond just praying, hoping, but doing nothing.

Although Trump is not a born-again Christian, I have always heard Mr. Trump show a consistent record of respecting Judeo/Christian values, even when he struggled to personally follow them.

This book may stretch a lot of Christians, because it causes them to become moved beyond their typical mode of how they vote or even see politics. The political scene is filled with ugly tactics and two second sound bites that change the perspective, based on key thoughts that have their basis on lies and misconstrued statements. Lance helps you get clarity on the issues and not get swayed by the day to day games that get played.

Whatever happens in this election season, I am thankful for Lance's voice. He's sharpening the church to wake up to a higher calling and to see with greater vision in how we can be effective.

Even if you disagree with the book, you can be encouraged to act for Kingdom change where he says, "You may be the lowest ranking person on the ship, but if you're the only believer, you are the highest ranking spiritual authority."

I believe it's time we use our authority to make a difference.

Truly a MUST READ, HARD TO PUT DOWN, BOOK

I'm only about 2/3 of the way through this book and felt compelled to write this review now versus waiting until I'm done.
I am someone who used to shy away from politics. Having only followed Dr Lance via social media (including Periscope) for just over a year, I've gone from being repulsed by anything political to, now I can't get away from it even when I try. I have a strong passion for the truth and for the American church to wake up and SEE before it's too late.
I remember reading about Dr Lance's experiences going to Trump Towers last year for meetings. I read those accounts to my friend I carpool with and literally felt like I'd been in those meetings. (This is included in the book).
If you're not familiar with who Dr Lance Wallnau is, I can tell you that what he's written is not some off the wall, prophetic word for "itching ears". This is a well thought out, researched book that provides biblical context and principles to today's current Presidential election, Mr. Trump's role, including the church and how we have a part to play.

Also, if you're someone like me who couldn't stand politics, but you love our country and concerned about our future, perhaps not sure what to think of our current candidates, confused by who or what to believe thanks to what is reported and spun by the spin doctors, mainstream media - then this book is for you!

Loved The Book!
I have been with Mr. Trump since the beginning. After hearing and seeing what has been going on in America, I felt that we needed someone who would do something to change things around instead of "turning the other cheek" as the rest in the government has done. Actually, they have sat on both cheeks while so many things that are going wrong in America keep getting progressively worse. After listening to other Christians telling those who support Mr. Trump that they are not really Christians, I believe that this book explains a lot about what is going on in America and with Mr. Trump. In some ways, the words in this book help me feel vindicated. This book is not just for the Christian, but is a must read for all who love America and do not want to lose our way of life. This is a very important election, so buy the book, read it and be an informed voter.

The Antwerp Hotel, Dover—March 1835

'You bastard! No one has that kind of luck!' The man across the table from Nolan Gray snarled in disbelief. 'If you lay down another ace, I'll…'

'What? You'll slice me from side to side? Shoot me where I sit?' Nolan Gray flipped the offending card on to the table—another ace indeed—with a nonchalance that suggested threats to his bodily well-being were a common occurrence when it came to cards and late nights.

The man half rose, a menacing hulk looming over the table. He was fully provoked by his evening's losses and Nolan's insouciance. 'When a fellow has the streak you've had, it isn't called luck any more. It's called something else.' He sneered, ready to leap the table for Nolan's throat.

'What do you call it?' Nolan leaned back in his chair, refusing to give the man the satisfaction of standing. He took his opponent's measure through alert eyes. The man outweighed him by two stone. A fight wouldn't be fair, but it wouldn't come to that, either because the man was nothing more than a bully or because there'd be weapons drawn before fists. Nolan had seen the type before, he just hadn't bargained on seeing that sort tonight. He should have known better. This was Dover, not an elegant London gambling club where gentlemen had their codes.

The man growled. 'You know what I call it.' He waved a hand at the other two men seated with them. 'You know what we all call it.'

Poor choice of allies, Nolan thought. The other two at the table didn't look as committed to the conflict. Then again, they hadn't lost as much. 'No, I'm afraid I don't. Care to spell it out for me?' Nolan pushed, wanting to see how far the man would dare to go. Further than Nolan had thought. He had just a moment's warning.

The man leapt the table, but Nolan was faster. A flick of his wrist and the slim handle of a blade slipped into his hand from the hidden sheath in his sleeve. He brought the blade up under the man's chin, using the man's own momentum against him. If he wanted to avert further trouble, now was the time for a show of force. The others at the table discreetly pushed back their chairs, making it clear they wanted no part of this.

'Are you calling me a cheat?' Nolan asked coolly. He didn't have time for this. Where was Archer? He'd been right here a moment ago and goodness knew Nolan could use some support right about now. Surely Archer hadn't left without him. They were supposed to meet Haviland and Brennan at the dock at an ungodly hour for their boat across the Channel.

It had hardly made sense to go to bed just to get back up, so he'd stayed awake. All bloody night. And look what it got him: the local Dover card sharp on the brink of calling him out; a duel his last night in England. Haviland would kill him if he was late and they missed the boat.

The man's chin went up a fraction either in defiance or an attempt to avoid the pricking of Nolan's blade. 'Damn right I'm calling you a cheat.'

'And I'm calling you a poor loser,' Nolan answered with equal vehemence. This wasn't the first time this had happened. Gambling had become tedious over the years: play, win a little, then win obscenely, duel, repeat. He hoped the French with their rumoured reputation for obsessive gambling proved to be better sports than his countrymen when it came to his flair with the cards. 'Shall we settle this like gentlemen somewhere or will you retract your comment?' He had to be at the docks in under an hour. Through the long windows of the hotel, he could see a coach draw up to the kerb—his coach. Perhaps he could squeeze in a duel if he was fast enough. Or maybe he should just make a run for it, although he hated the thought of letting this man get away with calling him names he didn't deserve. He'd counted those cards fair and square. Having a sharp mind was no crime.

They were starting to draw a crowd, even at four o'clock in the morning. Workers who rose with the city were coming into the hotel for their early morning shifts and deliveries. Wasn't this what he wanted to avoid? Being conspicuous? Scandal had driven him out of London, his father finally appalled by his son's level of notoriety.

Nolan lowered the knife and gave the man a shove, sending him sprawling back over the table. He tossed him a look of disgust, scraping his winnings into his coat pocket. 'You aren't worth it.' The sooner he was out of England, the better, but this was hardly the note he wanted to leave on. At least it was unlikely rumour would get back to his father that his son had been involved in a near duel just moments before his ship left. The Antwerp Hotel was hardly his father's environs.

He'd nearly reached the door when a sixth sense alerted him. The bastard hadn't stayed down, hadn't recognised mercy when it was meted out. Nolan whirled with a shout, blade flashing. He caught the glint of a pistol barrel in the light of the hotel lobby's chandelier not yet doused for the oncoming day. Without hesitation, he let his knife fly, straight into the man's shoulder. The pistol clattered to the ground. The clerk behind the desk gasped in disbelief. 'Mr Gray, this is a decent establishment!'

'He started it!' Nolan retorted. 'He's not hurt too badly.' Nolan had been careful with his aim—too careful. There was no question of retrieving the knife. The man lurched forward, his adrenaline overriding his pain for the moment. Later there would be plenty of that. It was time for a getaway. The clerk would call the watch and there would be questions.

Nolan raced out into the dark courtyard, spotting Archer coming towards him in the darkness from the stables. That was to be expected. Archer loved horses more than humans. 'Archer, old chap! We've got to go!' Nolan seized his arm without stopping and dragged him towards the waiting coach, his words coming fast, well aware his pursuer had stumbled out of the hotel. 'Don't look now, but that angry man behind us thinks I cheated. He has a gun and my good knife. It's in his shoulder, but I think he shoots with both—hands, that is. It wouldn't make sense the other way.' Nolan pulled open the coach door and they tumbled in, the coach lurching to a start before the door was even shut.

'Ah! A clean getaway.' Nolan sank back against the seat, a satisfied grin on his face.

'It doesn't always have to be a "getaway". Sometimes we can exit a building like normal people.' Archer straightened the cuffs of his coat and gave Nolan a scolding look.

'It was fairly normal,' Nolan protested.

'You left a knife embedded in a man's shoulder, not exactly the most discreet of departures. You got away in the nick of time.'

Nolan merely grinned, unfazed by the scolding. If he had been discreet, he would have stopped playing two hours ago. The other players could have respectably quit the table, their pride and at least some money intact. 'Speaking of time, do you think Haviland is at the docks yet?' They were scheduled to meet two friends at the boat this morning to begin their Grand Tour. 'I'll wager you five pounds Haviland is there.'

Archer laughed. 'At this hour? He's not there. Everything was loaded last night. There's no reason for him to be early. Besides, he has to drag Brennan's sorry self out of bed. That will slow him down.' He and Haviland had known each other since Eton. Haviland was notoriously prompt, but he wouldn't be early and Brennan was always late.

'Easiest five pounds I'll ever make. I bet he's already there, pacing like a lion, and he's got his fencing case with him. He won't let it out of his sight.' Then, because he couldn't refuse the goad, 'Kind of like my knife.' But Archer hadn't heard. His friend had leaned back and closed his eyes.

Nolan was too alert to doze. He thought about his five pounds. They would indeed be easy winnings, but Archer could afford it. He looked out the window. Haviland was already there, he'd wager more than five pounds on that truth. Archer might be Haviland North's best friend, but Nolan knew people and Haviland was a warrior. He wouldn't be parted from his weapons of choice. Besides, Haviland was anxious to be off. Nolan wasn't sure what demons were driving Haviland, but they were driving hard and fast, as odd as the notion was.

To all appearances, Haviland North's life was perfect; he was rich, in line for a choice title and endowed with extraordinary good looks. Haviland had it all. And yet, he couldn't leave England fast enough. He would have been there an hour ago watching them load the carriages even if the trunks had all been stowed last night.

A movement outside the window grabbed his gaze. He squinted and rubbed a circle on the window for a better view. For a moment he thought they'd been followed. Was that his man outside? But, no, this was no man. He nudged Archer with a boot. 'Care to explain why a horse is following us?'

Archer mumbled, 'I sort of rescued him this morning.'

'You abandoned me for a horse? I could have been killed,' Nolan exclaimed.

'And yet it was your knife in his shoulder. You were doing fine on your own,' Archer replied drily, moving his gaze to the window.

The drive to the docks was short despite the foggy dawn, and the horse was still with them, running alongside the carriage. Nolan clambered down from the coach, letting Archer deal with the horse. He sighted a tall, lone figure on the docks and let out a whoop, calling to Archer, 'What did I tell you? There he is. I win! Look at that, he's even got his case with him.'

Haviland strode towards them and Nolan clasped him affectionately on the shoulder. 'Good morning, Old Man. Is everything loaded to your satisfaction? I told Archer you'd be here overseeing.'

Haviland laughed. 'You know me too well, the coaches went on an hour ago.' Nolan was glad Haviland was handling the details. If it had been up to him, he'd simply have packed a trunk, jumped on board a ship and left everything on the other side up to fate. He was far more spontaneous than Haviland and Archer. It was the one gift of having to live an imperfect life. He'd learned early to be one step ahead of the blow so that when it fell, he was miles away.

The other benefit in not having an ideal family life was that he had nothing to live up to, not like Havi-land, who was going to inherit the Englishman's perception of Heaven on Earth, or Archer, whose family owned the most successful and expensive stud farm in Newmarket—for fun. Yes, they'd inherit perfection but they'd also have to spend their lives maintaining it for future generations. That was a lot of pressure.

He had no such pressure to conform to family tradition. The only perfection he'd inherited was his memory. He could count cards, three to four decks' worth if he had to, and he could calculate odds. That inheritance was quite portable. Of course, he'd inherited plenty of imperfections along with it. Those were in no short supply, starting with a puritanical father who firmly believed in beating excellence into his children at all costs and ended with the reality that choice created: his family hadn't seen each other in ten years. As soon as he and his brother had come of age, they'd scattered just as they had in the summers home from school—they'd never actually come home from school. They'd always arranged to spend the summers with friends. School might not have been intellectually edifying to him, but Nolan had found it freeing in other ways. He'd met Haviland, after all, and it had been the saving of him.

Archer was ribbing Haviland about keeping his case with him when Nolan's thoughts reengaged the conversation. 'I told you that, too. I know these things, I'm a student of human nature.' He laughed.

'Too bad you couldn't study that at Oxford,' Archer joked. 'You might have got better marks.'

Nolan laughed. He and Archer had been sparring for years. They had each other's measure. When he hadn't been spending summers with Haviland, he'd been spending them with Archer. 'What can I say? It's true. You two were the scholars, not me and Brennan.' Nolan looked around, realising the absence of their fourth member. 'Is Brennan here yet?' Time was getting dear.

'No.' Haviland shook his head. 'Did you expect him to be? Scholar of human nature that you are.' He ribbed.

Nolan gave Haviland a playful shove. 'A scholar of human nature, yes, a psychic, no.' He grinned. He was looking forward to this trip more than he realised, the four of them back together again. It would be like old times. Indeed, they saw each other in London during the Season, but it wasn't the same. The four of them were never all together at once. Archer was always in Newmarket these days. It was either he and Bren-nan or he and Haviland. Even then it was usually just for drinks at the club or a quick greeting at a ball.

All of them were approaching thirty, that most important age for men of their birth, when they were expected to marry and settle down. This trip might very well be their last time together as bachelors unencumbered by the responsibility of wives and children. Haviland would marry—it had already been arranged. Archer would follow. A man who loved breeding horses would surely love to breed his own children. As for Brennan? It would depend on who would have him on a more permanent basis. He was probably with a woman right now.

The captain of the vessel approached and urged them to board, making it clear he would not wait for the rest of their party. Haviland blew out a breath after the captain left, blaming himself for Brennan's tardiness. 'I should have stayed with him.'

Nolan murmured something encouraging. Brennan would be here. He had to be. Brennan was always late, always on the verge of trouble. Not too unlike himself. He was just better prepared for it. Brennan never saw it coming until it was too late. Perhaps that was why he liked Brennan, they were kindred spirits of a sort. They both had messy, imperfect lives. They both lived in the moment. Brennan wasn't a planner and that was certainly working against him this morning. Nolan could imagine him oversleeping in some woman's bed only to wake too late and realise he'd missed the boat.

Loved the setting

Good book with an exciting beginning that keeps the tension all the way through. Nolan has joined three friends on a "Grand Tour" of Europe. He is also escaping from a miserable family life. A few months later, Nolan is in Venice, doing what he does best - gambling. The game he is playing takes a strange twist when his opponent gambles away the virginity of his daughter. Though skeptical of the claim, he can't see leaving her to the mercies of the other men at the table. Knowing he can't leave her unprotected, he immediately takes her with him and leaves.

Gianna has been at the mercy of her stepfather for five years, ever since the death of her mother. She will gain her inheritance in a few weeks, an inheritance he is desperate to get his hands on. She knows his actions were another way of threatening her and was determined that he wouldn't see her fear. All she needs is to be able to stay with the Englishman for a few days while she gets her plans together. She doesn't expect the flare of attraction that threatens her plans to walk away from him.

I really liked Nolan. Although he thinks of himself as selfish, he is actually a really honorable man. He is suspicious of Gianna and her motives and worries that the attraction between them is an attempt to distract him. He quickly realizes that she is in serious trouble and is determined to help her, but first he has to get her to tell him the whole truth. I loved his intelligence and resourcefulness as he helps Gianna achieve her goal.

Gianna was also a strong and resourceful young woman. She is determined to lead a different life than her mother had, but to do so she has to get away from her stepfather. His threats against her grow worse the closer she comes to gaining her inheritance and being able to escape. Making sure that she can stay with Nolan is crucial to her plan, and she will do whatever she has to for it to happen. She's reluctant to trust him with the entire truth, and has some interesting ways of trying to distract him.

I liked the growing relationship between them. The chemistry between them is strong and draws them closer together, even though neither plans a long acquaintance. As they learn to trust each other, details of their pasts are shared. They find that their motivations are very similar, creating even more of a connection. Their feelings for each other deepen, but Gianna doesn't want to put Nolan at risk because of her troubles and tries to put distance between them. Nolan discovers a deepening sense of protectiveness, and a reluctance to part ways with her. I loved seeing them come together at the end.

The issue of Gianna's inheritance and her stepfather's pursuit of her was well done. Each layer that Gianna revealed ramped up the intensity of what they needed to do. From the retrieval of her mother's jewel case to the rescue of her brother, I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. The final confrontation was great, with a twist at the end that I didn't see coming.

I loved the setting of Venice during Carnevale. The descriptions of the canals and the scenery were vivid, making me feel as though I was there. I could almost hear the music of the concert and see the ball as it was happening.

Ahh a bad boy who catches your heart and won't let go. I so enjoyed this book for Nolan and Gianna were so entertaining, quirky, mesmerizing, and compelling characters. There was a multitude of human emotions while never losing sight of the love story. Thank you Bronwyn for anoth fantastic story. Debi Allen
