About the Author
Joel Fuhrman M.D. is a board-certified family physician, best-selling author and nutritional researcher who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods. As one of the country's leading experts on nutrition and natural healing, Dr. Fuhrman has appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows including: ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, Today, Good Morning America, the Discovery Channel, TV Food Network, and The Dr. Oz Show. His own PBS television show, "3 Steps to Incredible Health", began airing nationwide in June 2011.

His best-selling book, Eat to Live, published in 2003 (Little Brown) has gone through over 20 printings and been published in multiple foreign language editions. The revised version was released by Little Brown in January 2011.  His recent works include Super Immunity and Disease-Proof Your Child and has had published a total of 7 books on human nutrition to date.


Dr. Fuhrman is actively involved in scientific research in human nutrition. His discoveries on food addiction and human hunger were published in the scientific journal, Nutrition Journal, in November 2011 entitled, The Changing Perception of Hunger on a High Nutrient Density Diet.  Dr. Fuhrman is the research director of the Nutritional Research Project - a project of the National Health Association.  Dr. Fuhrman is on the board of directors of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.  He is also a member of the Whole Foods Market scientific advisory board. Dr. Fuhrman is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (1988).

As a former world class figure skater, he placed second in the United States National Pairs Championships in 1973. Dr. Fuhrman has been involved professionally with sports medical committees, advised professional and Olympic athletes, and lectured to athletic trainers and world-class athletes for maximizing performance and preventing injury.

Great Book - Helped Crohn's Disease

Praise God for Dr. Fuhrman's work and his texts on nutrition and health! Having been diagnosed with Crohn's disease for nearly 6 years and taking the medication the doctors told me to, was still having occasional problems and left wondering if this was how I was going to have to live for the rest of my life. I had read in the Bible that fasting is a valuable spiritual discipline and can be used to draw one closer to God by finding in Him a source of spiritual nutrition and strength available nowhere else. (Not to mention that Jesus gave His disciples instructions on how to fast when they did - expecting them to after His departure.) I had even experienced this. However, after being told by my doctor and others how important it was to keep my weight at a healthy level I decided that fasting my not be a good idea, since I didn't want to get even thinner. Well, I should have had greater faith :(

It was remarkable what even a short 1 day (and later 2 day) fast did for my digestive health. The rest from digestion improved how I felt very quickly and the improvement lasted. I have also read Eat for Health and implemented many of those concepts into my life and God has blessed me substantially. I am no longer taking medication at all - no asthma medicine (taken since I was 10 years old), and no Crohn's medication!

Definitely recommend this book.

GREAT BOOK

I wish Dr. Fuhrman work was a prerequisite for middle and high school, college students. What if this book and all of his other books were Regents classes that you actually had to pass, what would be available to our children. Most importantly, what future could we all live into that would make a difference for every aspect of the planet. What if when we went to the doctor, the first question they asked is what have you been eating, when is the last time you fasted, or do a 30-day colon cleanse in addition only eat raw vegetables during this time, how much medication would anyone be taking, how many aches and pains would people complain about, and how much more peace we can have in accepting our differences

Outdated advice confirmed by Dr. Fuhrman's office

I believe Eat to Live taught me more about nutrition than any other book besides How Not to Die by Greger. So I thought, ok, fasting might be the next step, and bought this book. I wrote to Dr. Fuhrman's office to ask a few questions that came up for me. This was the response I got:

"While Dr. Fuhrman says that fasting may be beneficial for certain medical conditions such as autoimmune diseases, since he wrote Fasting and Eating for Health in 1995, there have been research advancements in the field of nutritional science pointing to the healing effects of a plant-based, nutrient-rich eating style. After careful review of thousands of nutritional research studies, Dr. Fuhrman teaches that commitment to his nutritarian eating program will provide the same health benefits of fasting. The difference is that fasting provides only short-term results, while commitment to eating nutrient-rich, plant-based foods gives long-term results. Consult your local physician before beginning any fast."

Then why is this book still for sale with no commentary in the foreword or introduction, an update that says, hey, this is old information? It would still be interesting, but then you would know that it's purpose was more to understand Fuhrman's approach in the 90s.

The short of it: the book is interesting, but you're going to get outdated info.

When the federal government indicted Sergeant Tom Alessi and four of his colleagues in August 1991 on nineteen counts and seventy-two overt acts of theft, evidence planting, and excessive force, prosecutors planned to steamroll the officers into pleading guilty. They did not, instead they stood firm against invented lies and federal pressure while the media destroyed their reputations. Told in Tom Alessi’s own words, And They Found No Witches recounts the remarkable true story of law enforcement officers who refused to sacrifice their honor—while serving as a cautionary tale of the power of a cynical justice system.

About the Author
Tom Alessi was born and raised in Rochester, New York. He enlisted in the US Marine Corp for four years after graduating high school in 1967. Graduating from Monroe Community College in 1978 with an associate’s degree in criminal justice, Mr. Alessi joined the Rochester Police Department the following year, where he patrolled the streets as both an officer and a sergeant. In 1987, Sergeant Alessi transferred to the Special Criminal Investigation Section’s Narcotics Unit, where he served as commander of a specialized street drug enforcement unit until it was disbanded in 1990. After leaving the RPD in 1992, he worked for the Palmyra NY Police Department, then joining the East Rochester NY Police Department in 1995. While there, he served as it's firearms instructor and began the department’s first DARE program. Mr. Alessi retired with the rank of sergeant in August 2003. In 2005 he relocated to South West Florida where he owns and operates a firearms training business. He has two adult children and five grandchildren.

A must read book

This book was written by a man who was one of five police officers that were wrongfully arrested and brought to trial for crimes they never committed. Thank god these men stood their ground and defended the absurd charges that they were facing. The author did a magnificent job of articulating the story. If anyone has ever been falsely accused or feared being falsely accused, this is a must read book.

Every chapter had me wanting to know more. I was on an emotional roller-coaster and had to often remind myself this is a TRUE story. With each twist and turn I'd be thinking how could this have really happend.

Robert V. Kozinets is widely recognized as the inventor of netnography, and a social media marketing and research authority. An excellent resource

This book is an excellent resource for qualitative research in general, and truly the definitive guide for tackling research questions with an online component. The book is comprehensive, well organized and insightful. The entire research process is clearly articulated, and, importantly, the author also provides very concrete examples of how to move through stages of data analysis and interpretation - something that many research guides fail to do. In short: highly recommended!

Sadly disappointed

I was sadly disappointed by this book. I expected a book that would tell me about doing netnography using the modern Internet. All the examples used the old Usenet newsgroups. There was no information about doing ethnographic research with blogs. About 95% of the book could have been written 15-years ago and it was applicable then. It lacks awareness of how Web 2.0 changed the face of online communities.

This is the first book to describe, in as full detail as 1958 could allow, the horrific story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis and the ghastly fate of its crew.

The short version: having delivered the atomic bomb to Tinian in summer 1945, USS Indianapolis steamed for the Philippines, unescorted. Late on June 30, she was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine, killing 300 of her 1,200 men. The rest got into the water. There they floated for five days, broiling under the Pacific sun, suffering dehydration and salt-water poisoning, from their injuries and burns, going delusional from thirst, and being regularly attacked by sharks.

Incredibly, the US Navy did not know the Indianapolis was missing, as nonarrivals of combatant ships were not to be reported. Nobody would have known anyone was out there until a passing Army bomber, spotting oil slicks, swooped down to investigate, and found bobbing heads instead of a possible Japanese submarine. Only 300 men were pulled out of the water, including the cruiser's skipper, Capt. Charles Butler McVay III.

The tragedy was announced on V-J Day, probably to bury the horror in the victory, and the investigations that followed put the blame mostly on McVay. Incredibly, he became the only skipper of a US Navy ship sunk in combat to be court-martialed for losing his ship to enemy action. He was blamed for failing to get off an SOS and not issuing "Abandon Ship" orders in a timely manner. Not prosecuted were the shore-bound officers who did not notice that Indianapolis was missing for five days -- they never got court-martialed.

To make the December 1945 case more bizarre, the prosecution brought in as their star witness the commanding officer of the Japanese sub that sank Indianapolis, Mochitsura Hashimoto, who testified through an interpreter that it wouldn't have mattered if the heavy cruiser was zigzagging or not.

The trial ended with McVay convicted of failing to zigzag, but acquitted for failing to issue abandon ship orders. The court-martial authority recommended remitting the sentence on the basis of McVay's great war record. But McVay was the public face and scapegoat for the disaster.

The book was written in 1958, so there is much to it that has happened in this bizarre drama over the past 65 years. The most important follow-up was that McVay, unable to bear the weight of the sinking, shot himself on November 6, 1968, after years of receiving hate mail from relatives of sailors who died in the tragedy. After 1968, the sinking gained new fame when Robert Shaw described it eloquently in the 1975 smash hit movie "Jaws," becoming the best-known (and fictional) survivor of the horror. This in turn empowered survivors of the sinking and McVay's family to plead for restoration of the skipper's good name and clear his record. It would take a sixth-grader, Hunter Scott, to finally succeed, beginning in 1996 and finishing in 2001, forcing the Navy to do so -- and embarrassing a three-star admiral in the process.

None of this, however, detracts from the power and immediacy of Mr. Newcomb's work, which is the beginning of all accounts of this incredible tragedy. With the talent of a first-rate journalist, Mr. Newcomb describes the final voyage of the cruiser, its sinking, the crew's ordeal in the water, the incompetence on shore, and the bizarre hearings and court-martial that followed. He has a keen eye for detail and character, and the book even includes the Japanese side of the story.
