As leaf tissue is concerned, study suggests that pruning time could not influence the NPK content of leaf significantly but level of pruning had marked effect on its content. This book helps to understand the tree management strategy to increase shoot numbers and induce off-season flowering and also give some insights on how pruning brings balance between vegetative and reproductive function of the plant.

    A Must-Have for a Lee-Enfield Collector

    "The Lee-Enfield" represents a lifetime of study by Mr. Skennerton, and the amount of information it contains is astounding. The book itself is quite large, which allows plenty of pictures to be included and keeps the considerable amount of text legible. The binding seems to be good enough (I'm no expert) and three ribbon bookmarks are included (Red, White, and Blue, naturally). The story of these rifles is laid out in impressive detail from the first trials with magazine rifles through each stage of development and deals individually with each location of global production. Skennerton then provides detailed descriptions of the various component parts and technical details for each model of Lee-Metford or Lee-Enfield. This section has been the most helpful for me as a new collector, as it presents the different variations in a simple and understandable way, giving a page with a picture and brief description to each. Information is also included on the various accessories and ammunition.
    The work seems to be something of a one-man show, and spelling or grammatical errors are not uncommon, although I haven't seen any that hurt understanding. I have also heard second hand that this book deals best with Australian rifles (Skennerton is himself Australian) and leaves something to be desired regarding Indian manufacture. I have yet to find any glaring mistakes, but I'm new and I wouldn't expect to notice anything but the most obvious errors.
    This book isn't cheap, but it is high-quality and such specialized books usually come with a high price tag. Given the wealth of information it provides, this book is well worth purchasing for anyone interested in these rifles.

    If you are a fan of Lee Enfields...then this book is for you!

    I became a fan of the Lee Enfield rifle beck in the 80's when a friend of mine bought one. Now that I have bought my own Enfield,and plan to own more versions, I thought I should get this book to learn the history and various versions of the weapon. I love this book. If you have an Enfield and want to learn what all the stamps and markings mean, this book covers about 99% of them. Ian Skinnerton's book is a must for Lee Enfield fans. This book is the definative digest for all things Enfield. It comprises "The Lee Enfield Story", and "The British Service Lee"(which are both out of print and hard to find) into one master volume with more information to complete this tome.

    If you are looking for a "How To" for disassembling and repairing your Enfiled, this is not it. If you want to know anything and everything about the Enfield's impressive histoy...Here you go. It is exactly as described and beautifully bound.

    Great book for the enfield collector !

    This book has everything you wanna know about enfields ( almost ) and I love it !
    I love the Long Branch factory picture ( taken from an airplane ) and the Lithgow photos. And the Savage Co. ad was really nice too.
    It has chapters covering the North American enfields, The Austrailian enfields and the Indian/Pakistan enfields. Lots of details ! and very good illustrations and photos.
    If you really like enfields, you should also get the stratton enfield books and this book. Great books ! Personally I liked the Stratton Enfield books, The SMLE and the No.'s 4 and No.s 5 rifles , better. Its easier to get enfield facts from the Stratton books. But Skennertons book is still a great book to read.

    I have read and enjoyed all of Ms

    I have read and enjoyed all of Ms. Lahiri's books. Her father actually worked at the Library at the University I attended when I was there (I did not know him) and she grew up close to where I lived while at University. I was drawn to this book because I am a third culture "kid". I was brought up in Rome as an American. As such when I had read that Ms. Lahiri was living in Rome and writing this I was looking forward to this book. Sadly, it did not meet my expectations. It's a bit repetitive, a bit self indulgent and without humor, laughter and mostly about her many irritations with growing up and never fitting in any language/culture. This despite the fact that she is a scholar with three Masters' degrees, a PhD, a Pulitzer prize and extremely well received novels. Yet she decides to abandon English and immerse herself in Italian. It works in that she becomes fluent in Italian in a year and decides to write exclusively in Italian as well. But in the end the book is mildly irritating. I'm not sure she truly understands the Italian culture, and if she does she writes with no evidence of it. She complains, complains, and complains -- about most things in Italy and writing in English. I would recommend only for those folks who want to follow her career closely.

    Putting words to working with words

    I am reading this book on my kindle which is a bit of a struggle because it is difficult to flip between Italian and English. Just ordered the hard cover because this is a very special book.
    Learning a new language is difficult and exhilarating at the same time because it opens your mind to a different way of thinking. I have been going through the learning process in various languages and it is always gratifying when you can actually have a conversation in a language that is not your native tongue.

    This book expresses in a beautiful way describes the process of learning a new language with thoughts and concerns that I recognize in my own efforts to communicate as much as I can in the language of the people I work with especially in my activities as coach and negotiator. I recognize now what actually happens in the mind because Jhumpa has the gift to describe and put into words what has for me just thinking in the background.

    A book that makes you exclaim: "yes, that's how it feels. I have never been able to put a finger on that feeling but this is exactly what I feel when struggling to learn a language or improve" is very special and rare. It is like a very good coach or mentor pointing out a behavior that you know you have but never knew why you did certain things or felt certain things.

    In short: this amazing book brings tears in my eyes because of the deep recognition it evokes about language, culture, being expatriated, being there while being somewhere else. Highly recommended.

    Gave me agita

    I was so looking forward to reading Ms. Lahiri's new book as I too love la lingua italiana. I have read and loved her writing and read her short stories with my students (I teach ESL). The book gave me agita...it seems she was intent (militant even) on conquering and perfecting Italian, and in her obsession lost the beauty, grace and humor of the culture the language reflects.

    This simply the best curry book I have ever owned. It is well worth making the masalas yourself as it makes all the difference to your final flavour. Try the traditional lamb korma as an absolute winner every time. Shame it is out of print!

    Dissapointing

    No idea why this book gets the renown it has. I think it may have dated very badly and harks back to a time when nobody knew anything about Indian food.
    After having made numerous dishes from the book I have been repeatedly disappointed. With few exceptions there is an incredible sameness to the flavour of many dishes produced. The culprit seems to be the garam masala recipe, which overwhelms everything whenever its used. The techniques and information provided are good, for actual recipes I'd look elsewhere.

    His most personable and approachable cookbook yet; a book with loads of possibilities!

    I was a bit intimidated by his first book "Japanese Hot Pots", and less so by his second book "The Japanese Grill", but I did finally get a grip on both of them--and I enjoy using both those cookbooks. So, of course, this one drew my attention. The fact that I find this new "Soul Cooking" personable and approachable, may be because I have become comfortable with many Japanese terms and ingredients because I use his first two books frequently. But I really think it is because Tadashi Ono is a fun guy--and his personality comes shining through in this third book. I think he's finally come into his "own": His own way of teaching, writing and doing.

    I think he's always been aware of how the Western world influenced Japanese cuisine and culture , from the mid 1800's when foreigners began arriving in Japan, to during and after World War II. But I also think he had to get real comfortable with his place in the scheme of things to write about it. You know, you can't really talk about "soul" and "comfort" until you have a firm handle on what surrounds it. Well, Tadashi has ID'd it beautifully in this book: The book itself is fun and somewhat of a history lesson; the recipes are do-able and they appeal to a "Western" taste, (after all, the dishes were influenced by Western tastes); you can find the ingredients (fairly easily, or with internet help), and the recipes are not complicated.

    In many cases, you can take short-cuts and buy the condiments needed to pull the dish together, or you can take the advice of Tadashi and make your own with the recipes he has provided. I'm not saying that I will use all the chapters in this book, because I don't do much tempura or other fried foods--my kitchen exhaust system is just not set up for it. But there is some much more in this book that I highly recommend it, both as a great compilation of recipes and as a significant and fascinating history lesson, complete with great pictures.

    Each chapter focuses on a different dish. You learn how it began (usually as a restaurant offering), then how it grew to become popular in home kitchens. Tadashi takes apart each dish (like tempura, ramen, curry, gyoza, etc.), explains how it came to be, then helps you create it from scratch. He provides all kinds of variations. If you follow through each chapter carefully, by the end of the chapter, you should have a firm handle on how to make it--that is how well Tadashi teaches.     To help you with some possibly unfamiliar terms: Most of us know ramen, curry, tempura, soba and udon, and I won't describe those chapters further. But let me try to describe some of the other chapters:
    --Gyoza are dumplings and you will learn to make several varieties and to cook them by in an easy frying and steaming process. In this chapter you will also find a miso dipping sauce and rayu, a flavored chili oil. You will learn how to freeze them and use them in soup.
    --The curry chapter is loaded with recipes and contains one called "Battleship Curry" that was served to servicemen on board ship.
    --Tonkatsu is a deep-fried panko crusted cutlet or ground meat patty.
    --Furai and Korokke: Furai is deep-fried panko seafood and veggies, and Korokke is a deep-fried "croquette" of chopped up meat, seafood or veggies. This chapter also contains all the sauces to go with these fried foods.
    --Kara-age is a deep-fry technique imported from China. It differs from tempura in that the food is dredged in flour or potato starch, not the light batter of tempura.
    --Okonomiyaki: Now we're talkin'! These are pancakes, and I'm really happy to have this chapter firmly in hand and under control and in my repertoire. These pancakes are both light-weight (in their "base" of flour/dashi/cabbage, etc.) and heavy-weight in all the toppings. They are accomplished on a griddle or in a heavy fry pan. (They are a lot of fun!) Yakisoba are included in this chapter. They have a base of ramen noodles.
    --Donburi: Tadashi calls donburi the "ultimate dish for busy people". It is a one-bowl dish of almost any kind of ingredient heaped on a big bowl of rice and served with miso soup and pickles. A trip through this chapter will leave your mind churning with possibilities.
    --Itame and Chahan: Itame means stir-fried or sauteed. Chahan is fried rice, Japanese-style.
    --Yoshoku is Western-style cooking and the recipes in this chapter are Japanese takes on European and American dishes. You will find gratins, potato and macaroni salad, omelets, steak, hamburger, spaghetti and other pasta.

    So, you can see there are plenty of chapters to spur your imagination. And it is truly interesting to see the Western influence. And one more tidbit of information: It may not matter to you, but it did to me: Joe Yonan, one of my favorite cookbook authors and the food and travel editor of Washington Post recommends this book on its back cover.

    Wonderfully presented guide and cookbook to 'real' Japanese cuisine

    Really liked this book for its atypical focus away from the more rarefied aspects of Japanese cuisines (eg - sushi, kaiseki, etc) and instead cataloging 'everyday' Japanese comfort cuisine, the dishes eaten by all strata of the populace from within the cozy confines of their homes to quick, no frills street eateries. If you've spent some time in Japan sampling such fare or have any shred of interest in better understanding the essence of real Japanese cuisine this book is certainly a fantastic starting guide for you.

    Things I really liked:
    +Comprehensive and well laid out catalog of Japanese comfort food categories ranging from Curry to Okonomiyaki and the little-known (outside of Japan) but essential aspects of 'Yoshoku' dishes.
    +Recipes are very well presented with an average difficulty level (ranging from 1-5) at about '2.' Techniques are well explained and the only thing that will really hold back the average home cook is access to certain ingredients and first hand tasting knowledge to serve as your reference basis.
    +Each of the 13 chapters is organized by specific food type. For example, Chapter 1 = 'Ramen.' Within each chapter is a nice scattering of anecdote and background information about the dishes. These elements were perhaps the most interesting and entertaining portions of the book.
    +Whether or not you actually cook any of the recipes, merely by skimming through the book you'll gain a solid understanding of everyday Japanese meals and if you ever make it out there for a visit will have solid knowledge of what various restaurants serve and what people actually eat at home.
    +Layouts and photographs are well done. Each page is very attractively designed.

    Could've been better:
    +While I enjoyed the quality of the photographs my chief complaint is that the book needs more. Approximately 30% of each recipe has an accompanying photograph - too low in my opinion.

    Simple, doable, and delicious

    I moved to Fiji after spending five years in Japan and I sorely missed ramen, kara-age, okonomiyaki, and yoshoku (Japanized western dishes). When I saw this cookbook, I doubted I would be able to make any of them here because of my lack of access to foreign ingredients. A few shops carry Japanese soy sauce (Kikkoman), sake, and mirin, but I couldn't find most of the ingredients listed by the cookbooks I bought in Japan. This wasn't the case with "Japanese Soul Cooking": because it's written for a foreign audience, it makes do with the most basic Japanese ingredients and even teaches how to make some condiments like Tonkatsu sauce from scratch. And because one of the authors is a Japanese chef, the recipes live up to my memory of the comfort food I enjoyed in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Hiroshima. And the best part is, they're not complicated at all: I was able to make three recipes from this book in just one week (they were all hits, by the way, especially the Nagoya Tebasaki). I'd recommend this to those who are missing authentic Japanese soul food, no matter where they are (as long as they have access to soy sauce, sake, mirin, miso, and dashi, they're all set).

    Here's what you can make with this cookbook: Ramen (Shoyu, Miso, and Shio Ramen, among others), Gyoza (includes recipes for homemade rayu & miso dipping sauce), Curry (without the boxed roux!), Tonkatsu (with recipes for panko & tonkatsu sauce, Furai & Korokke (plus how to make Japanese-style tartar sauce and salads), Kara-age (with a recipe for homemade ponzu), Tempura (with step-by-step pictures for making the batter), Okonomiyaki (both Osaka and Hiroshima styles, plus takoyaki and yakisoba), Donburi (nine variations of pure comfort), Soba (hot & cold dishes), Udon (wide range from classics to a modern cold version with fresh tomatoes), Itame & Chahan (stir-fries and fried rice), and Yoshoku (gratins, steaks, and pasta).

    Highly recommended. Hats off to the authors!
