But if she has any bleeding at all during weeks 29 to 32, the chart indicates that she should tell her doctor immediately. Mayo Clinic took root in farm fields near Rochester, Minn., in the late 1800s. It grew from the medical practice of a country doctor, William Worrall Mayo, and the partnership of his two sons, William J. and Charles H. Mayo – affectionately known as Dr. Will and Dr. Charlie.

Superior to "What to Expect..."

Back when babies were just daydreams, I recieved "What to Expect When You're Expecting" (3rd ed.) from a pregnant friend who had an extra copy. Not knowing any better, I was quite pleased. Once I became pregnant and actually needed a guide, however, that changed. I found the book to be poorly organized, overly conversational and condescending in tone (especially given my plans to be a stay-at-home mom), and generally useless for anything other than instilling fear and paranoia. Most exasperating, though, was the "organization." Symptoms that can arise during varying parts of pregnancy are scattered haphazardly amongst the monthly chapters. This means that the book must be read cover to cover and all material retained in memory if hunting through the index and flipping back and forth between sections doesn't sound appealing.

Enter the "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy." Hallelujah! Not wanting to suffer through another mediocre guide to pregnancy, I looked through every book I could get my hands on, and this was the only one that satisfied my criteria. It is written by trustworthy professionals in clear yet -professional- language, it provides information on "pregnancy, childbirth and your newborn" in chronological order, and best of all, it contains separate sections entitled, appropriately, "decision guides for pregnancy, childbirth and parenthood," "pregnancy reference guide," and "complications of pregnancy and childbirth," each with a table of contents at the beginning of the section. Instead of having to take a wild guess at which chapter (or, more likely, chapters) cramping might have landed in in "What to Expect" or searching the entire index, I could find it, along with all the other things I might be wondering about, in the reference guide. Blessed simplicity!

The "Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy" was the only book I needed. Once I found it, "What to Expect When You're Expecting" went back on the shelf and stayed there.

Best pregnancy book ever

When we started trying, I bought a lot of pregnancy books. I am now towards the end of my first trimester and this book has been by far the best book I own on this topic.

This book is extremely well organized, very informative and objective, and covers a wide range of topics from pregnancy to birth to breastfeeding.

It is very easy to find what you are looking for. For each week, it explains what your body is going through, how your baby is growing and what emotional changes you could expect. In each month, there is a summary page that lists the problems you may have in that period and tells you when you should call your doctor. There are very nice drawings that show what your baby looks like and how big it is. (Some pictures are real size, for others the book tells what percentage of the real thing the picture is.)

This book had answers to all my questions so far - and I should say, being a very curious first time mom, I had a lot of questions.

The ONLY book you need

I had bought several pregnancy books, including the Mother of All Pregnancy books and a couple of others, shortly after finding out I was pregnant. I kept getting disappointed by them - either the tone of the book would be off, or the information wouldn't be complete enough, or the book would be too cutesy for me to stomach. I got a recommendation from someone for this book, and after I read it I was sorry that I had wasted any money on other books. This is the only pregnancy book I need.

It's hard to describe just how comprehensive the information is. If you, as a pregnant woman, need to know about something, it's discussed in this book. There's a large section on pregnancy discomforts and problems, but it's written in such a way that it's not depressing at all. The book is very straightforward about common pregnancy symptoms - if something hurts, they don't pussyfoot around, they say "this hurts" - but yet not negative about the experience of pregnancy either. The tone of the book is very straightforward, but yet upbeat at the same time. There are great week-by-week descriptions of what's happening with your baby, complete with illustrations, and in the week-by-week chapters there are also discussions of issues relevant to your pregnancy and suggestions about things you might want to think about or make some decisions about at that stage. There is VERY extensive information about prenatal testing, complete with great diagrams (this was the first book that showed me what really happens during CVS testing) and the information is presented in a neutral, nonbiased way that really aids decision-making when it comes to prenatal tests.

One of the most helpful features of this book are the "decision-making guides" in the middle. These are short articles about things like breastfeeding, deciding to have another child, etc. that present the pros and the cons in a very balanced and neutral way, so that you as a parent can make decisions for yourself. The book recommends breastfeeding and provides detailed instructions on breastfeeding, but also provides plenty of information on formula feeding, complete with instructions on how to formula feed, which is something I have not seen in many other books. I plan to breastfeed but if you are not planning to, or find you cannot, this book has some great information for you about formula feeding.

One other extremely helpful feature of the book are the charts for each trimester that help you decide when you should talk to your doctor about certain kinds of symptoms. I was surprised to find that some things I would think would be not that serious are actually things that warrant an immediate call to the doctor. I know I will be referring back to those tables over and over my entire pregnancy.

Overall, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Loads of information to help you make the best decisions you can in your pregnancy. Don't bother buying any other book. This is the one you will go back to for information and reassurance over and over throughout your pregnancy.

A remarkable book by a remarkable woman.

I was fortunate enough to work with Ruth for about a year before she passed away. Anyone who has met Ruth knows that her spirit transcended her physical disability. This book is only one example of her courage and perserverence. Please, please read this book. It might change your outlook on people with disabilities.

In Remembrance: Ruth Sienkiewicz-Mercer

Ruth Sienkiewicz-Mercer is, in my estimation, one of the most remarkable women about whom I have ever read. Not only did she survive separation from a loving but misinformed family and the horrors of Belchertown State School, Mrs. Sienkiewicz-Mercer accomplished something seldom achieved by the institutionalized disabled. She not only left the institution, she rose high above it. In this book she uses her eyes to tell her story.
I am saddened to report that Ruth Sienkiewicz-Mercer passed away in the summer of 1998. She never spoke her entire life but she will be sorely missed by those she reached with her words. Many thanks to Steven Kaplan for helping her tell her story.

For anyone who wonders why people who have disabilities fight so desperately against institutional care, this book will show you why! Dehumanization, being cut off from friends and family, rejected by society, this book shows it all. Thank God that this book also describes the way out. Like Joseph, thrown in the pit, sold into slavery, and thought dead for years by his father; we will be free!

OUTSTANDING BOOK!

I have been an Edgar Payne enthusiast ever since art school and that was decades ago. This book defines what so many feel and think of his works. And for the purchase price, not only do you get a great biography of the man but also full color and full page illustrations. I own an Edgar Payne drawing and if I had the money available I'd also have an original Edgar Payne painting hanging in my home. This book is well worth the money and to me Payne defines what Southern California landscape painting is and should be!
Enough with this modernist attitude of art for art's sake and I agree with Payne on that subject wholeheartedly! BUY THE BOOK!

Incredible tour de force

This is one of the most important books in the English language. It is imperative that it remains in print.

Wierzbicka gives a detailed semantic breakdown of all the English speech act verbs she can find, more than a hundred. Each is discussed in depth, contrasted against others, then broken out into her English pseudo-code language.

A critical reference.

Will only be useful for advanced researchers in pragmatics, linguistics, and higher-level computational linguistics. As speech acts sit on top of semantics / syntax / grammar / lexical items, the book mentions but is above these layers. Speech acts are also similar to illocutionary force. If you do not already know what pragmatics and illocutionary force are, there is no reason for you to open this book. Otherwise, it is an extremely chewy reference, with tough, valuable meat on every page. Invaluable for the right person.

While the defeat is often blamed on blundering and arrogance on the part of General Braddock - who was wounded in battle and died the next day - David Preston's gripping new work argues that such a claim diminishes the victory that Indian and French forces won by their superior discipline and leadership. In fact the French Canadian officer Captain Beaujeu had greater tactical skill, reconnaissance, and execution, and his Indian allies were the most effective and disciplined troops on the field. Preston also explores the long shadow cast by Braddock's defeat over the 18th century and the American Revolution two decades later. The campaign had been an awakening to empire for many British Americans, spawning ideas of American identity and anticipating many of the political and social divisions that would erupt with the outbreak of the revolution. A New Definitive Study of an Iconic Battle that Helped to Shape the Nation

Prof. Preston has written a superb account of this iconic battle that epitomized the tactical differences as between the French Canadian - Indian forces (until Montcalm changed them) and Britain's traditional, Europe-derived massed infantry and volley fire. This is a fine "update" to the work of Kopperman, and may well be the definitive account for our times. Preston has found some important new sources, including a speech by an Iroquois warrior that sheds some light on one of Preston's main points: the Indian allies of New France had their own agenda(s), and allied with the French when that offered material and enduring rewards. This warrior also explained why some traditional Indian allies of the Brits were not so eager to support Braddock's "invasion" of the over-the-mountains territory that the Indians believed (with some obvious reasons) was their homeland: young George Washington, after his contacts with the French at the forks of the Ohio failed to consult with these Indian allies. This played into the widespread suspicion among the Indians that the French and the British had an overarching goal of eliminating them (the Indians) even while fighting each other for primacy.

Preston also dispels the old conventional wisdom of Braddock's generalship as being overly strict, hidebound, reflexive and narrowly confined by European traditions. Instead, Preston shows how, at several times, Braddock showed himself to be a "soldier's general," even holding the American colonial members of his expedition to a little lower standard of military conduct. He did not, however, neglect to institute extensive measures for march security, even with very few Indian scouts available. And Braddock never uttered the derogatory words about and to Indians that others attributed to him after he died in battle. But this isn't mere revisionism for its own sake; Preston's scholarship is highly impressive. His work is extensively noted, and his bibliography is extensive.

Preston spends most of this work narrating the history of the march, showing its extreme difficulties, which Preston has personally confirmed on the ground by walking portions of Braddock's Road that still exist, and by paddling down the rivers. This all highlights how radical this attempt was to project military power into the American heartland. Preston also hints at the question whether march fatigue and loss of sleep contributed to the performance of the troops when attacked. However, he astutely points out that the British troops stood and fought for some 3 hours a virtually invisible enemy who had assumed an ambush formation the length of the British line of march. This does not suggest undisciplined, panicked, incompetent soldiery.

The real story of the Monongahela, Preston shows, was the victory of the French and Indians due to their superior woodlands tactics. Preston corrects the traditional record that the French commander, Beaujeau, won over the Indian allies only at the last minute with a speech full of bravado and challenge. Instead, the Indians, who came from many tribes and from all over the modern US Midwest to the Atlantic lands, held their own council at least one day before the battle. They agreed to stand with the French, and brought numbers to raise the combined French & Indian force to about 950 fighters, over 2/3rds od whom were Indians, and it turned out the battle was mostly an Indian victory.

Preston goes on to provide some thought-provoking conclusions, and adds several highly useful appendices, including the two side's respective orders of battle, the casualty lists, the Iroquois' hitherto undiscovered speech, an account from the French side, etc.

This book is well-written in clear, concise prose that flows without distractions that limit the conveyance of information. It is the best book I have read on the subject by quite a margin, and is likely to stand as the definitive account of this battle for a long time. I recommend this for anyone interested in the American Frontier, our military and historical heritage, and as a vignette of what war fighting was like in America before there were roads, railroads, etc. This book deserves its 5 stars.

This is an outstanding history book. On a par with those written by David McCullough who has won the Pulitzer Prize twice. Meticulously researched, but more importantly, eminently readable. I could not put it aside for even a day. Highly recommended for anyone remotely interested in the foundation of the United States.

This book reflects brilliant research and meticulous attention to detail. I was fascinated by the the implications of the battle on the future of American history. I have visited many of the landmarks noted in the book and always wondered how Braddock's army managed to build the road to transport the troops and supplies in that primeval wilderness. Many kudos to the author. This truly was the American Teutoburg.
