Cast in Flight (Chronicles of Elantra), by Michelle Sagara

New York Times bestselling author Michelle Sagara returns to the city of Elantra with a thrilling tale rife with ancient magic, assassination attempts and political intrigue.

Private Kaylin Neya already has Dragons and Barrani as roommates. Adding one injured, flightless Aerian to her household should be trivial. Sure, the Aerian is Sergeant Moran dar Carafel, but Kaylin's own sergeant is a Leontine, the definition of growly and fanged. She can handle one Aerian.

But when a walk to the Halls of Law becomes a street-shattering magical assassination attempt on the sergeant, Kaylin discovers that it's not the guest who's going to be the problem: it's all of the people who suddenly want Moran dar Carafel dead. And though Moran refuses to tell her why she's being targeted, Kaylin is determined to discover her secret and protect her at all costs—even if keeping Moran safe means dealing with Aerian politics, angry dragons and something far more sinister.

Fabulous story - yes, a story that moves forward instead of looking backwards or world building. Kaylin is growing - both mentally and emotionally. It was great to 'hear' less whining and more acceptance of her limitations due to lack of understanding, education or knowledge.

The world canvas is getting very crowded. This book focused on the arian race and the usual other suspects - Nightshade, barrani, dragons, Hawks, etc... Almost every main characters from past books had a role in this book - somewhat a nice catch up book. I think the entire book only covered 7 - 8 days. So much drama in such a short time - as Mandoran say, 'it's not boring'.

Hopefully the next book will be as fast pace - but will manage to move more than one week. At this rate it will take 30 more books before Kaylin turns 30. Love the stories about the all the various races - but would really like to know about Kaylin and her future as Chosen. Is she immortal? Is she mortal? What role will she play for all the races? Will she ever be able to call fire? How about being presented at the dragon court? And Nightshade....consort? So many questions - hoping the next book will answer at a few of them.

Spotlight on the Aerians in Book 12 of the Chronicles of Elantra
By ML
With "Cast in Flight," her 12th "Chronicles of Elantra"/"Cast in ..." novel, Michelle Sagara continues to develop the world of Elantra, focusing this time on the winged Aerians that main character Kaylin Neya admires so greatly. Moran, an Aerian and the primary medic for the Elantran Hawks (constables), was injured in "Cast in Honor" and can no longer fly. She reluctantly becomes Kaylin's housemate and guest of Helen, the sentient self-modifying house. After Kaylin and her familiar help thwart an assassination attempt on Moran, and after Kaylin and Severn uncover ominous evidence of magical foul play aimed at Moran while walking their beat, it quickly becomes clear that something odd and dangerous is occurring within the Aerian community. This "something" appears to involve the mysterious substance known as "Shadow" and could even be related to the dark lord of the city called Ravellon.

Keeping a series alive and moving forward for so long is an admirable achievement. Sagara does it both by continuing to deepen our (and her own, I'm sure) understanding of this world of Elantra; by adding and developing characters; and by keeping the timeline tight (no more than two years have passed in Elantra since the first novel). This strategy is not without its frustrations to readers, as the pace of world-building is a slow, the cast of characters has grown enormous; and Kaylin's continued reliance on instinct and intuition at the expense of knowledge grows annoying, especially with most of the other characters harping on her ignorance. Furthermore, relationships between characters also tend to develop at a glacial pace. Moran's relationship with all other characters is transformed in this book, but Kaylin's relationships with others barely budge, with the only other interpersonal change of note involving the dragon Bellusdeo and her would-be suitor, the dragon emperor.

That said, it's important to keep in mind the apparent target audience for this series: young women growing up in an increasingly diverse world. One of Kaylin's chief virtues is her willingness to confront and overcome her own prejudices, which, as in this case, can include idealization of "exotic" others. Another of her virtues is a selfless dedication to the greater good (which, not infrequently, edges over into reckless heroics), and that is also on display here. One of her faults is resistance to change, but, as in every previous book she is forced to confront and adapt to change, and she does so with as much grace as she can manage. I don't have a daughter, but if I did, I would be happy to see her taking lessons from Kaylin.

I should also note that an important piece of this novel concerns saviors (or messiahs) and devils. Is it a privilege or a burden to be a savior? Is the devil evil, or merely misguided, or something else entirely? There are no firm answers in this book, especially with regard to the devil, but I'm sure we will be learning more in the future.

Bottom line: Another worthy addition to an enjoyable and engaging fantasy series.

Much better than the last book; still no answers
By kadiddly
I liked this one a LOT more than I liked *Cast in Honor*, which I found very confusing and not terribly interesting. This one feels more like the books at the beginning of the series. I really enjoyed learning more about the Aerians and the Shadows and how maybe things aren't always what they seem. There's also a lot more action in this book, which was fun.

I can't give it five stars, though, because there's still no real character development, nor are any of the overarching questions answered. One is tantalizingly teased towards the beginning, but then the conversation is interrupted and we still don't get any new information on it. That's getting very frustrating. Kaylin does show much more self-confidence in her home, telling off the Emperor and making suggestions to Nightshade about his brother, which is promising, and she does seem to at least try to think things through instead of accidentally stumbling onto the right answer by instinct, but this progress is a bit tempered by the seemingly constant dwelling on the past. At least, in this case, we see more of her memories of Moran, instead of the fiefs. Hopefully, the emphasis that the Emperor put on the importance of her self-awareness will force her to mature a bit.

It's still a good book in the series, and if you keep in mind the fact that the events are happening much closer together in the books than when we get to read about them, the slowness of character building makes sense. Only about two years (if that?) have passed in the books, but some of us have been reading the series and wondering at questions for eleven years now, and we're getting a bit impatient, I think.

Thai Food, by David Thompson

Renowned chef David Thompson first went to Thailand by mistake: a holiday plan had to be changed at the last minute, and he ended up in Bangkok, where he was seduced by the people, culture, and cuisine. Since that fateful trip some 20 years ago, Thailand has become David's second home. Working alongside cooks who perfected their craft in the Thai royal palaces, he began to document the traditional recipes and culinary techniques that have been handed down from generation to generation.

The result is THAI FOOD, the most comprehensive account of this ancient and exotic cuisine ever published in English. David writes about Thailand and its food with an easy erudition, encouraging readers to cook and experiment, while simultaneously fostering a respect for the food and its stewardship through the ages. Although all the classic, well-loved recipes are here, this magnum opus features hundreds of lesser-known but equally authentic and delicious Thai dishes that will inspire cooks to go beyond green curry chicken and Thai fish cakes. David's passion and conviction are infectious; complemented by Earl Carter's superb photography, THAI FOOD captures all aspects of the dynamic Thai culture and cuisine.

• Ten years in the making, this groundbreaking work is one of the cookbook publishing events of the decade.

• The author's London restaurant, nahm, received a Michelin star in 2002, making it the first Thai restaurant to receive such an honor.

• Photographed at David's restaurants in Sydney and London, and on location in Thailand, Earl Carter's superb images capture both the essence of Thai food and its rich cultural milieu.

Amazon.com Review
"Thai cooking is a paradox," writes Australian restaurateur David Thompson in his comprehensive and thus aptly named Thai Food. "It uses robustly flavored ingredients--garlic, shrimp paste, chilies, lemongrass--and yet when they are melded during cooking they arrive at a sophisticated and often subtle elegance." Pursuing this transformation in depth, his book presents hundreds of recipes that celebrate the Thai meal while exploring its historical and cultural context. Readers will delight in the wide selection of authentic dishes like Duck and Spring Onion Soup, Grilled Beef Salad, and Green Chicken Curry with Baby Corn, and relish Thompson's vast appreciation of his subject. Though the recipes are straightforward and workable once ingredients are assembled and techniques understood, those new to Thai cooking may want a less rigorous introduction to the subject. However, anyone with an appetite to explore it on Thompson's terms will benefit immensely.

Beginning with an exploration of Thailand's history and culture, the book then presents an extended section on rice, the centerpiece of the Thai meal. The "cookbook" follows, with a systematic introduction to the Thai kitchen, ingredients, and equipment. The chapter "Food Outside the Meal" is devoted to Thai snacks and vendor food, such as Stir-Fried Crisp Fish with Holy Basil. Noodle dishes include an exemplary pad thai, and sweet dishes like Grilled Bananas with Coconut Cream and Turmeric are also offered.

Readers should know that the recipes, published primarily for an Australian audience, give ingredients in a mix of metric and American measurements and/or with nonmetric equivalents, and that nomenclature is also sometimes foreign ("minced" for "ground" meat, for example). With photos throughout, the book sets a standard for Thai cookbooks to come while helping many cooks achieve the true, richly exotic cuisine. --Arthur Boehm

From Publishers Weekly
This collection of Thai cooking lore, history and recipes can be as daunting as it is comprehensive. A description of the country, its various socioeconomic groups (called muang) and its culinary history is lengthy and perhaps a little too in-depth. While Thompson's enthusiasm for his subject is palpable, readers may be anxious to get to the actual recipes, but the first one does not appear for nearly 200 pages, after an essay on Thai superstitions and a glossary of ingredients such as bai yor, a tobacco-like plant, and dried lily stalks. The recipes are thorough and authentic, and while they call for many items that may be hard to find, Thompson good-naturedly provides alternatives to most of them. Thailand's signature strong flavors are in evidence in dishes such as Bream Simmered with Pickled Garlic Syrup and a Salad of Pork, Young Ginger and Squid. Recipes are divided sensibly into soups, curries, salads and the like, but one chapter simply titled "Menus" contains various dishes that work together to form a traditional Thai meal (menus such as one that includes Prawn and Lemongrass Relish; Egg Mousse with Pineapple, Corn and Salted Duck Eggs; and Deep-Fried Bean Curd with Crab, Pork and Spring Onions are intriguing). A chapter on snacks and street foods offers additional tasty choices such as Rice Cakes with Chili, Prawn and Pork Sauce and Egg Nets, lacy crˆpe-like wrappers created by drizzling beaten egg into a hot wok that are stuffed with a pork and shrimp mixture. The dessert chapter also provides instructions for creating Smoked Water, flavored using a special candle with a wick on both ends.

From Library Journal
Thompson, an Australian chef with two Thai restaurants in Sydney, opened Nahm in London last year; shortly thereafter, it became the first Thai restaurant ever to receive a Michelin star. Somehow, he also found the time to write this huge, exhaustively researched book, focusing especially on Thai cuisine of the late 19th century, when, he believes, Thai cooking "reached an apex." Although he explores regional and peasant cooking as well, the only recorded recipes of the time are from the upper classes and those associated with the Siamese court, and Thompson has translated and adapted many of those recipes. The first section of the book provides detailed cultural and social history and a guide to the regions and regional cuisines of Thailand. Then a detailed glossary of ingredients and a guide to techniques introduce the hundreds of recipes. These are grouped into chapters on relishes, soups, curries, salads, and sides, followed by one of menus with recipes. Chapters like "Food Outside the Meal"-snacks or street foods and desserts-complete the book. Su-Mei Yu's Cracking the Coconut is an excellent introduction to Thai home cooking, but Thompson's culinary history/cookbook is unique and will be an important purchase for any Asian cookery collection.

Not quite the recipes you would expect
By bleuSD
I have not cooked anything from this book yet. My review is just on the collection of recipes itself. Reading the intro, the author says that he found these recipes in cookbooks and memorial books. I read through the recipes in the book to my mom (my parents are both Thai). She only recognizes about half of the recipes. Thinking about where the recipes came from, if I found a recipe in a memorial book (little booklets about the life of the deceased given out at Thai funerals), I would think that this is someone's personal recipe. It may not be a dish that is known outside the person's family. It would be like a foreigner who finds a recipe for a cookie that had walnuts and dried cranberries in them, then compiled a big cookbook about American food and sold it in his country. If you didn't know what some of the common American cookies are you would think you found the recipe for an American cookie (it is and it isn't). The recipe does include Thai ingredients but some of the recipes are very obscure. One positive that I can think of is that this book includes recipes for sauces and condiments.

If you are looking for a thai cookbook with recipes for popular dishes found in thai restaurants, you are better off buying his Thai Street Food book. (This book includes only a few popular thai dishes. However, there are a good amount of recipes for sauces and condiments in here). If you want to go off the beaten path, this book is for you.

100% authentic Thai recipes
By Jess
Talk about a phonebook! This cookbook has it all (Thai recipes that is). Be aware that the recipes are fairly complex and require a prior knowledge of Thai cooking (I refer to it as my 'blackbelt' Thai cookbook), but make no mistake these recipes are very authentic (can't say the same for 90% of Thai cookbooks I've seen) and there are an endless amount of recipes too choose from.

I would have liked for the recipes to have a few more details in them, and more pictures of the dishes too. However, I bought this book because i wanted authentic Thai food recipes and it certainly does not disappoint in that regard.

By UnfilteredDregs
This book is an encyclopedic treatise on Thai cookery.

It is daunting. Not easily approachable for the impatient. There is no instant gratification to be found within these pages.

What you will get:

Amazing insight into the culture and history of Thailand and how it has informed the cuisine.

The reason why Thai food has evolved as it has with amazing insight into the wherewithal of the techniques involved.

This book will teach you how to cook Thai food as the Thai would have you do it.

An excellent source of education with which to truly learn what it means to cook in the way of the Thai people.

Le Sceptre D'Ottokar MINI ALBUM (Aventures de Tintin) (French Edition), by Herge

12 x 9 x 0.5 Inches The Adventures of Tintin (Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of comic strips created by Belgian artist Herge the pen name of Georges Remi (1907 1983). The series first appeared in French in Le Petit Vingtieme, a children's supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle on 10 January 1929. Set in a painstakingly researched world closely mirroring our own, Herge's Tintin series continues to be a favorite of readers and critics alike 80 years later.
The hero of the series is Tintin, a young Belgian reporter. He is aided in his adventures from the beginning by his faithful fox terrier dog Snowy (Milou in French). Later, popular additions to the cast included the brash, cynical and grumpy Captain Haddock, the bright but hearing-impaired Professor Calculus (Professeur Tournesol) and other colorful supporting characters such as the incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond et Dupont). Herge himself features in several of the comics as a background character; as do his assistants in some instances.
The success of the series saw the serialized strips collected into a series of albums (24 in all), spun into a successful magazine and adapted for film and theatre. The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
The comic strip series has long been admired for its clean, expressive drawings in Herge's signature ligne claire style. Engaging, well-researched plots straddle a variety of genres: swashbuckling adventures with elements of fantasy, mysteries, political thrillers, and science fiction. The stories within the Tintin series always feature slapstick humor, accompanied in later albums by sophisticated satire, and political and cultural commentary.

A True Classic
By GearHead
King Ottakar's Scepter is one of the top 5 Tintin titles. It's a wonderful, mile-a-minute adventure that fans of Indiana Jones will easily recognize. In addition, it introduces the wonderful country of Syldavie, recognizable to all true Tintin fans.

In comparison to Herge's later, more deliberate works, this one throws Tintin about like a cork on the ocean, with every page having at least four incredible escapes from danger or death. Some of them are nearly impossible to believe (Tintin survives being dropped out of an airplane?), but on the other hand they make "Scepter" more enjoyable and more authentic to the golden age of rip-roaring comic serials. If you're just starting to buy Tintin, put this at the top of the list.

I can't be wholly objective about Tintin. I've been reading the books since I was in elementary school, following Tintin's amazing adventures from the Middle East to the Moon. The boy reporter is great for kids, but he's also entertaining for adults.

Two notes:
- This is a reworking of the original artwork, done by Herge himself post World War II. This is evident in the more mature, vibrant, and polished artwork. To understand more about this, look up Tintin and Herge in Wikipedia. In short, Herge did the strips that form this book before World War II in an earlier, more primitive style that reflects their original appearance in newspapers. He re-did many of these early strips later on. I, for one, believe that the later result is better, although you ought to try to find one of the earlier books to see what I mean.
- You won't get a true feeling for Tintin if you read "him" in translation. French is full of idioms and connotations that don't survive translation, and even then, Tintin is a Belge, not a Francais! Worst of all, the "English" translations are British English that use idioms and language that Americans won't recognize. I really believe that Tintin is worth learning French for.

Tintin and Milou try to solve a royal mystery in Syldavia
By Lawrance Bernabo
"Le Sceptre d'Ottokar" ("King Ottokar's Sceptre") is a Les Aventures de Tintin in which our intrepid hero gets to do a lot of deductive reasoning. Certainly there are more actual clues than Hergé usually includes in his mysteries. Tintin encounters Professor Alembik, who studies seals (no, not the friendly little animals but the things you stamp into wax on official papers). This seems a harmless career choice but Tintin finds that both he and the good professor are embroiled with secret agents and a plot against the King of Syldavia. It seems there is a major loophole in the laws of the monarchy, for if the King were to lose possession of King Ottokar's sceptre, he would lose the right to rule and have to abdicate. This would work to the advantage of the bad guys across the border in Borduria, so it is up to Tintin and Milou to save the day. They are aided in this endeavor by Dupont and Dupond; to be precise, they endeavor to aid.
"Le Sceptre d'Ottokar" was produced by Hergé in 1939 and the more you know about Europe on the eve of the Second World War, the more you are likely to see lurking behind the characters and actions of this Tintin adventure. However, it is hard to tell if Hergé is trying to make any sort of a point; certainly during the war it was clear Tintin lived in a different world, so I am loathe to see anything beyond a compelling narrative. This is an actual mystery, where clues need to be solved and mysterious developments need to be explained. On top of all that throw in the ongoing perilous situations that our hero and his faithful terrier find themselves in time and time again in these early adventures. Oh, and there is also Tintin's first meeting with Bianca Castafiore, which is not exactly something I am inclined to celebrate, but that is just me. A very solid offering from Hergé.

what better way to introduce them to their ancestral language
By FD
This brings back " mes souvenirs d'enfances.....quand j'etais moins vieux.." Tintin, Capitaine Haddock, Professeur Tournesol, Milou, are all classic which must be passed on to the next generation...notably my children...as this undoubtedly expose them to the "better cartoons" and idols instead of the Spongebob et al. Besides, what better way to introduce them to their ancestral language.

Tigers of the Snow: How One Fateful Climb Made The Sherpas Mountaineering Legends, by Jonathan Neale

The true story of the tragedy and survival on one of the world's most dangerous mountains.

In 1922 Himalayan climbers were British gentlemen, and their Sherpa and Tibetan porters were "coolies," unskilled and inexperienced casual laborers. By 1953 Sherpa Tenzing Norgay stood on the summit of Everest, and the coolies had become the "Tigers of the Snow."

Jonathan Neale's absorbing new book is both a compelling history of the oft-forgotten heroes of mountaineering and a gripping account of the expedition that transformed the Sherpas into climbing legends. In 1934 a German-led team set off to climb the Himalayan peak of Nanga Parbat, the ninth highest mountain on earth. After a disastrous assault in 1895, no attempt had been made to conquer the mountain for thirty-nine years. The new Nazi government was determined to prove German physical superiority to the rest of the world. A heavily funded expedition was under pressure to deliver results. Like all climbers of the time, they did not really understand what altitude did to the human body. When a hurricane hit the leading party just short of the summit, the strongest German climbers headed down and left the weaker Germans and the Sherpas to die on the ridge. What happened in the next few days of death and fear changed forever how the Sherpa climbers thought of themselves. From that point on, they knew they were the decent and responsible people of the mountain.

Jonathan Neale interviewed many old Sherpa men and women, including Ang Tsering, the last man off Nanga Parbat alive in 1934. Impeccably researched and superbly written, Tigers of the Snow is the compelling narrative of a climb gone wrong, set against the mountaineering history of the early twentieth century, the haunting background of German politics in the 1930s, and the hardship and passion of life in the Sherpa valleys.

From Booklist
Among the many accounts of mountain climbing in the Himalayas, Neale could not find any that focused on the Sherpas as an entity in their own right. So he resolved to make good the deficit by writing the history of the porters whose image has evolved from that of unskilled laborers to "tigers of the snow." Neale underscores that Sherpas view expeditions as a livelihood, making them more cautious about risks than most foreigners seeking to summit. His question to them--"Why do foreigners climb mountains?"--provoked laughter as he trekked around Sherpa villages conducting oral interviews. On that journey, he encountered Ang Tsering, who had been a porter on a 1934 siege of Nanga Parbat by a German group. It was a disaster, but Neale deems it the "turning point" in Sherpa history because it changed forever how the porters thought of themselves. Although occasionally digressive, Neale engagingly profiles the Sherpas' association with Western alpinists. Gilbert Taylor

Review
"If there were six people on an expedition who wrote a book about it, a reader would feel he'd been on six different expeditions. And now we have a version from the Sherpas' perspective, in many ways the most important."--Doug Scott, mountaineer and author of The Shishapangma Expedition and Himalayan Climber

"By turns comprehensive and dramatic...The kind of thoughtful and informed portrait that the Sherpas richly deserve."--Kirkus Reviews

"This is a very personal story of Sherpas and how they developed from casual laborers to skilled mountain men. Jonathan Neale has lived with them, learned their language, and he has gotten into their psyche and iron determination. From the Sherpas' point of view of expeditions, he has gotten it right."--George Lowe, C.NZ.M., O.B.E.

About the Author
Jonathan Neale was born in New York, grew up in India and Texas, and lives in England. He has written three nonfiction books, three novels, and eleven plays. Neale has done anthropological field research with nomads in Afghanistan, sailed the Atlantic in a small boat, worked for several years as an AIDS counselor, written a Ph.D. thesis on naval mutinies in eighteenth-century Britain, and was part of the organizing committee for the protests against the G8 in Genoa in 2001. This book grew out of his love for trekking in the Himalayas.

Wonderful

This is a book of absolute necessity for anyone who claims to be a mountaineer, and there are few true mountaineers from any school of the art anymore. Showing one of the - if not the first - crucial turning points for the Sherpa people as simple labourors for foolhardy, selfish foreigners to the truest examples of mountaineers on the world's great peaks.

For the history alone, and for Neale's obvious reverence for the Sherpas of Nanga Parbat, this book is an important addition to mountain literature.

Instead we have foreseen powerful but flexible means of organizing defense, based on the dual principle of taking full advantage of the terrain and establishing a continuous line of fire everywhere.” – Andre Maginot

As the power of Nazi Germany grew alarmingly during the 1930s, the French sought means to defend their territory against the rising menace of the Thousand-Year Reich. As architects of the most punitive measures in the Treaty of Versailles following World War I, the French government made natural targets for Teutonic retribution, so the Maginot Line, a series of interconnected strongpoints and fortifications running along much of France's eastern border, helped allay French fears of invasion.

The popular legend of the Maginot Line portrays the frontier defenses as a useless “white elephant” project that was prompted by a gross misapprehension of warfare's new realities in the mid-20th century and quickly overwhelmed by the forceful advance of the German blitzkrieg. English idiom today invokes this vision of the Maginot Line as a metaphor for any defensive measure strongly believed in but actually useless.

Indeed, usages such as “Maginot Line mentality,” describing an overly defensive, reactive mindset, perpetuate the legend. As a French author and military liaison with the British, Andre Maurois, wrote about his disillusionment with the defensive line he originally enthusiastically supported: “We know now that the Maginot line-complex was a dangerous disease of the mind; but I publish this as it was written in January, 1940.”

In reality, however, the actual Maginot Line proved considerably more functional than memory has served. The true flaw in French military strategy during the opening days of World War II lay not in reliance on the Maginot fortifications but in the army's neglect to exploit the military opportunities the Line created. In other words, the border defense performed as envisioned, but the other military arms supported it insufficiently to halt the Germans. The French Army squandered the opportunity not because the Maginot Line existed but because they failed to utilize their own defensive plan properly. Some French commentary contributed to the legend, but the bloviating of politicians altered nothing regarding the Maginot Line's actual purpose or history: “General Maurin, defended the status quo in these words: ‘[H]ow could one think that we are still thinking about an offensive when we have spent billions to establish a fortified barrier? Would we be mad enough to advance beyond this barrier to undertake some adventure?’ [...] but the Maginot Line had never been conceived as a sort of Great Wall of China sealing France off from the outside world. Its purpose was to free manpower for offensive operations elsewhere.” (Jackson, 2004, 27).

In fact, a forgotten battle in the southeast of France, where four French divisions (later reduced to three by the redeployment of one northwards in a futile effort to stem the German tide) held off 32 Italian divisions thanks to the defensive power of the so-called “Little Maginot Line of the Alps,” proved the soundness of both the concept and engineering. Though the Italians suffered from poor equipment and the meddling incompetence of Mussolini's personal “leadership,” the fighting on the Alpine front brilliantly highlighted the Maginot Line's success as a “force multiplier.” French soldiers held off brave but futile Italian attacks at odds of 8:1 or 10:1 in favor of the Italians for five days until an armistice with the Axis put an end to this undeniable display of the Maginot Line's effectiveness.

Nice Photos (poorly labeled), but not much else. Should change the subtitle of the book to "A Poor Description"

It is not surprising the Charles River company does not put the name of an author to this work since it seems to be a cut and paste job put together the impress those who know little to nothing about the subject. Reading the samples should be enough the convince anyone there are better books on the topic. Here are some examples of many flaws in the text:
The section "World War I and the Origins of the Maginot Line" implies by only mentioning an Allied offensive in the Argonne region and massive casualties, that this led to the creation of the Maginot Line. The author(s) are two years off and have misconstrued why and what the Maginot Line was based on. They go on to comment that “...as the power of Nazi Germany grew alarmingly during the 1930s, the French sought means to defend their territory against the rising menace of the Thousand-Year Reich.” The construction of the Maginot Line began in late 1929 after many years of planning and arguing on what the military should do against a resurgent Germany many years before the Nazis took power. By the time Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933, a large amount of the work on the Maginot Line was already started and nearing completion in many sectors. The only country that would match this description of responding to the rising Nazi threat was Czechoslovakia where work did not begin until the Nazis were in power and began to present a threat.
“The French Army squandered the opportunity not because the Maginot Line existed but because they failed to utilize their own defensive plan properly.” Does this mean they had a defensive plan that would have been successful and they did not use it? Or was the plan they had inadequate to meet the threat? This is just one example how comments are made in a nonsensical manner.
“..a forgotten battle in the southeast of France, where four Frnech Divisions…held off 32 Italian divisions thanks to the defensive power of the so-called “Little Maginot Line of the Alps,” proved the soundness of both the concept and engineering.” Only forgotten by those who know nothing about the campaign of 1940. The author(s) imply the Little Maginot Line of the Alps was basically the same as the Maginot Line Proper that ran from Hagnenau to Longuyon in the Northeast. Although many elements of the designs were similar, there were modifications and terrain played a major role in forming a defensive position which only in one part of the Southeast Front was anywhere near being a continuous line.

The author(s) give a brief description of the 101st Fortress Division defending section of the Maginot Line based on inaccurate information and in one sentence make it appear its supporting artillery was equal to the Germans and then try to leave the impression it was not. They describe the defences of the Maubeuge area but emphasize their weaknesses while leaving the impression they were built according to designs of the Maginot Line Proper, although they were not on a similar scale and lacked the defensive ability of the forts of the Maginot Line. The author describes these as if they were part of the Maginot Line and the how the Germans were able to overwhelm these lesser works because they were poorly armed without making it clear this was not part of the so-called Maginot Line except on propaganda maps.
The bibliography for this book is made of nothing but a small number of secondary sources and only a few of them are significant works in English. None of the important French sources are included and that explains why this project amounts to little more than an undergraduate research project with many pitfalls. If a student produced a similar work, he probably would have been accused of plagiarism based on some of the material that used expressions and descriptions taken from the books in the bibliography without foot noting.
A second look through this "book" also reveals that the photos are poorly labeled so you do not know what you are actually looking at such as photos of entrance blocks he (whoever wrote the book since no one is mentioned) which he simply identifies as the "ouvrage of..." and sometimes a "bunker". The reader has no idea what they are actually looking at. No distinction is made between the the Alpine ouvrages and those of the main line in the northeast so the reader assumes all ouvrages are the same. For that matter, ouvrages are not even described properly since those that wrote this claim the ouvrage was divided into two parts and if one fell the other could continue to resist. Only some gros ouvrages were divided into two sections of combat blocks, most of the gros ouvrages had two section that were separated (the groups of combat blocks and the entrance blocks with the underground service areas - the latter had little to resist with). Even the source of external electrical power is not correct. There is no description of even identification of what the combat blocks were, much less a description of the types, or the entrance blocks. A person who knows nothing about these forts could not even describe what one of these ouvrages actually looked like after reading this booklet. Even worse, they do not provide a single plan of an ouvrage (and all were different, but they had many basic features). THe one map comes with no explanation and only shows the sectors (if you can actually read them).
There are other examples, but the buyer should beware that this is a poorly done secondary source. Other books are available that are much better, including Kindle editions. For a few dollars more there is an Osprey book titled the Maginot Line by William Alcorn which provides better information and detail.

You get what you pay for and with this cheap little booklet you are getting cheated. For those that think they learned something from the book, can you answer this questions:
1. What were the two types of entrance blocks almost all gros ouvrages (except in the Alps) had?
2. What was the difference between an artillery block and an infantry block? What were the two types (actually 3) of artillery block and how many of each type weapon did they have (except in the Alps)?
3. How were the gros ouvrages of the Alps different from those of the Northeast?
4. What were the main components found in service and support areas of a gros ouvrage?
5. How was the Maginot Line organized into two major sections in the main line and why were these sections divide by the Sarre Gap? What was the original intention of the Sarre Gap?
6. How were several old forts incorporated into the Maginot LIne?
7. What was the difference between the gros ouvrages of the Maginot Extension, those of Maubeuge, and the ouvrages of the main line?
8. What role did Petain play in the creation of the Maginot Line and what defensive problem was he responsible for?
9. Who did the Rhine defenses (those on the Upper Rhine) differ from the remainder of the Maginot LIne.
10. What was the failure in French strategy that cause defeat (and it was not the Maginot Line) in 1940?
11. What disadvantages did the Germans have when they tried to use some parts of the Maginot LIne in 1944?
12. What happened to the Maginot Line ouvrages after World War II?
If you can not find the correct answers to these questions in the booklet (which you can read for free on Kindle), you may realize why this works amounts to a poor cut and paste job using the references in its bibliography (only 4 of which are relative to the Maginot Line for a history and desription).

Great book for students
By Samantha Withee
This book is easy to follow great for students
Loved how the author used pictures, and kept each chapter on topic. Book isn't too text book style so it rather interesting.
I would recommend the author, makes the chapters shorter. So the reader can take more in.

Description of numerous strategic errors and successes of the various armies that attempted to use the Maginot Line
By Modupe Hendricks
This book is like many of the other books by Charles River’s Editors, it is concise and brief. What I found to be most interesting was a discussion about the Alpine Line or Little Maginot Line along the Franco-Italian border. Little Maginot Line demonstrated that the defense concept of Maginot Line should have been effect if the line had been built to the Atlantic Ocean on French land. The book also discusses numerous strategic errors and successes of the various armies that attempted to use the Maginot Line for either defense or offense. I really like this book.
