Chris Brewster is Professor at Henley Business School, University of Reading, UK and Visiting Professor at the University of Nijmegen, Netherlands and Vaasa University, Finland. About sixty thousand Jews from Wilno (Vilnius, Jewish Vilna) and surrounding townships in present-day Lithuania were murdered by the Nazis and their Lithuanian collaborators in huge pits on the outskirts of Ponary. Over a period of several years, Kazimierz Sakowicz, a Polish journalist who lived in the village of Ponary, was an eyewitness to the murder of these Jews as well as to the murders of thousands of non-Jews on an almost daily basis. He chronicled these events in a diary that he kept at great personal risk.

Written as a simple account of what Sakowicz witnessed, the diary is devoid of personal involvement or identification with the victims. It is thus a unique document: testimony from a bystander, an “objective” observer without an emotional or a political agenda, to the extermination of the Jews of the city known as “the Jerusalem of Lithuania.”

Sakowicz did not survive the war, but much of his diary did. Painstakingly pieced together by Rahel Margolis from scraps of paper hidden in various locations, the diary was published in Polish in 1999. It is here published in English for the first time, extensively annotated by Yitzhak Arad to guide readers through the events at Ponary.

About the Author

LEWIS C. LIN is CEO of Impact Interview, an interview coaching firm. Lewis was named by CNN as one of the "top 10 job tweeters you should be following." He has also been featured on FOX, ABC News, San Francisco Chronicle, The Atlantic, The Telegraph, and Business Insider. Before Impact Interview, Lewis was Microsoft's Director of Product Management. Prior to Microsoft, he worked at Google, leading new AdWords product launches.

Lewis has also written two other bestsellers on interview preparation: Decode and Conquer as well as Rise Above the Noise. He is also the author of Five Minutes to a Higher Salary, a salary negotiation book.

No more digging through useless math on the web, this book saved me so many hours!

Math has been one of my strengths but somehow I would still manage to choke during interviews when the interviewer came out with a puzzler or a weird estimation question. This book does a great job at identifying categories of math interview questions, providing a methodical solution for each type and most importantly building up confidence to even face the most savvy interviewers.
I just wish I had this book before just like the other books from this author on product management and salary negotiation, I have spent so many hours finding half-baked sites on the net for the same things and never found anything this good

BUY THIS FOR YOUR CASE INTERVIEW!

Having read Lewis' other books "Decode and Conquer" and "Rise Above the Noise" this book is much different as it is more of a workbook than a coaching manual. It focuses on the dreaded case interview questions which are being used by a variety of consulting companies (McKinsey, Bain, BCG, etc.) as well as many top employers including Google, Amazon, Microsoft...

Great news is that just as his other books, he takes out the fluff and gets to the heart of the matter. Lewis begins by being very upfront of what to expect from the book and delivers on it in an efficient manner. As with his other book he has simple frameworks to help you organize your thoughts and break down a problem into the necessary pieces.

I interviewed with several consulting firms as an MBA student and found that his frameworks were spot on and you can essentially take what he gives you and make it your own. The practice problems in this book are great and essentially what you would find in a case interview and include a variety of topics (including a problem on Pillow Pets!)

It's hard for me to imagine a case interview question that this book would not aid you in answering. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is prepping for case interviews, it's a great tool and will let you focus on more important things and quickly and succinctly organize your thoughts.

Interview Tip: Half the case interview question is actually being able to explain your thought process to the interviewer and make it so they are able to follow you and your thought process (an essential skill when working as well) so be sure to not only practice solving the problems but organizing your thoughts and diagrams in a manner that you can show someone else. They should not wonder how you got from 1 step to the next.

Makes it easy

This book makes it easy to prepare for what used to be a stumbling block for me. Doing quant problems on the spot, quickly and accurately enough to impress, takes practice.

The book does a great job of laying out the frameworks straightforwardly and then follows up with plenty of sample questions and solutions. After reading a few, you'll find yourself already catching on to the patterns. Learning by example is definitely the easiest way to master this style of interview question.

Looking back over the last year, it would have helped me knock these questions out of the park:
1) Google: how much of storage will we need in 2015 for Gmail?
2) Yahoo: how many people visit Yahoo finance each day?
3) PayPal: how much should the company's travel budget be for next year?

You have to expect math at interviews these days, so be ready!

Her goal is "a cure for some, improvement for all." She criticizes the inertia she has observed in medicine that causes many primary care providers to postpone referring patients with cerebral palsy (CP) for treatment until symptoms become "bad enough" to warrant attention. Early intervention, she argues, produces far better results. She criticizes the same inertia for resisting challenges to the disproved yet still common belief that in many cases, rehabilitation is impossible and the best possible outcome is the child's condition failing to worsen. Using personal observations, case studies, and published research, Pape makes a convincing case for a more optimistic prognosis for children with CP. About the Author

Karen Pape, MD, FRCPC, is a neonatologist and clinical neuroscientist. As a medical innovator, she is challenging the system to raise expectations for babies born with early brain and nerve injury. She was a neonatologist and director of the Neonatal Follow-up Clinic at Toronto’s renowned Hospital for Sick Children, with an additional research fellowship in Neonatal Pathology and Ultrasound Brain Scans in London, England. She co-authored a book on baby brain pathology and was instrumental in the development of neonatal ultrasound brain scanning, now used in neonatal intensive care units worldwide. Pape then directed work at the Magee Clinic in Toronto, developing a new, personalized approach to children and adults with early onset brain or nerve damage. She has lectured widely and conducted over 200 training workshops and conferences for parents, therapists, and physicians throughout North America and internationally in 12 countries. Dr. Pape lives in Toronto, Canada.

LIfe altering in so many positive ways

I was lucky enough to read an advance copy of this and I read from cover to cover without putting it down while our son was receiving therapy at a great centre who practice what Dr Pape has learned. What Dr Pape does for families of CP kids and adults is to think outside the square and show us that what we have options. The changes we have put in for our son are getting real results and we have been lucky enough to experience many changes in him and some within a day and we will continue to work on him to get him the best recovery. "Habit hides recovery" is a key concept and I would urge any parent of a CP kid to take this book and look for therapists that are willing to work with that in mind. Dr Pape is truly an revolutionary for not accepting the norm and looking at options. The day I stumbled onto a Ted talk of her's last year was truly the most life altering event for our 9 year old son, I cannot recommend this book and Dr Pape's work highly enough.

A must read! I could not put this book down. Dr. Pape takes a refreshing yet very informative approach to explaining neuroplasticity, and how the brain CAN recover from traumatic brain injury. She shares many powerful stories from her real world experience as a leading neonatologist and neuroscientist, and gives tremendous insight as to what can be done to assist the brain with healing. Dr. Pape also has a positively unique take on hope; something that is not frequently seen or offered in the arena. I highly recommend all special needs parents, physical therapists, occupational therapists, neonatologists, neurologists, teachers, EA's, and pediatritians to read this book. Thank you Dr. Pape for this incredible page turner!

Probably using fourth-century BC sources, Olympiodoros records that 'Damon taught Perikles the songs through which Perikles harmonized the city'. However, musical and political entanglements caused this teacher-theorist to be ostracized from Athens for ten years, at the height of Perikles' power.

Reconstructing Damon is the first comprehensive study of the most important theorist of music and poetic meter in ancient Athens, detailing his extensive influence, and providing the first systematic collection, translation, and critical examination of all ancient testimonia for him. In doing so, this volume makes an important contribution to a number of key fields, including classical Greek music and music theory, fifth-century philosophy (particularly the sophists), political history including the growth of democracy, and the life and career of Perikles.

Robert W. Wallace is Professor of Classics at Northwestern University. A graduate of Columbia, Oxford, and Harvard, he has written or edited seven books and some 85 articles in the fields of Greek history, literature, law, music theory, and coinage. He has been a visiting professor at the Universities of Siena, Pisa, Urbino, Trento, Halle, and the American School of Classical Studies, Athens. He has lectured widely in Europe and North America.

Abercrombie offers his take on a familiar fantasy yarn, with subtle distinctions and twists to make it his own. While he introduces us to his intriguing setting, more overt world-building seems to be the province of later volumes. In "The Blade Itself", Abercrombie demonstrates a knack for another staple of great fiction: compelling, relatable characters. They are sometimes archetypes, sometimes novel, but they are never boring. Also, they all come with some kind of delicious twist.

Take Glokta, for example. He started out as a Contest champion who was commissioned as one of the King's Own, then captured in battle during the Union's war with Gurkhul (where he was making a heroic sacrifice of himself so other soldiers could escape) and tortured by the enemy for two years. He returns to the Union but, due to the injuries he sustained during his years as a prisoner, he cannot resume his military post. Instead of giving up and going home to become a burden to his family, he joins the King's Inquisition and becomes a torturer himself. While there are certainly other allegories that could be made for the arrival of a man into middle age, Glokta himself summarizes the sentiment quite succinctly: "What a place. Glokta stifled a smile. It reminds me of myself, in a way. We both were magnificent once, and we both have our best days far behind us."

Would this man need to be an Inquisitor to feel isolated or outcast? Of course not; his physical debilitation already confers him that status. How Abercrombie relates Glokta's distaste for everyone else around him is uncanny. Be it Luthar (whom Glokta might well be jealous of anyway, simply due to Luthar's youth) or his old 'friend' West (a man he resents for living, even though that was exactly what Glokta's 'sacrifice' was intended to win) or the head of his own order (Sult is a very special kind of d*ck and it should come as no surprise the highest-ranked inquisitor would force a crippled man to climb several flights of stairs for information easily disseminated by other means).

This is but an example, a single emotional step in ONE character. Abercrombie presents several similar facets in several different characters. True, not every character is this nuanced or developed (not in this first book, at any rate), but that the author presents this ability so effortlessly is... staggering and humbling.

If the characters were not engaging enough to hold interest, Abercrombie makes some quality observations. A few noteworthy quotes:

"Hard words are for fools and cowards."

"That got him to thinking about his life. It seemed a bitter, pointless sort of life now. No one was any better off because of it. Full of violence and pain, with not much but disappointment and hardship in between."

"It could be worse, believe me. It's when you come out before you went in that you really start to worry."

TLDR: a very enjoyable romp. Quite spellbinding, even with occasionally formulaic elements and presentation. The next part of the series is already on the short list of "must read" books.

Think George RR Martin with a bit more humor and the barest hint of hope

There’s little way to read The Blade Itself and not think of Game of Thrones. I hate to say that, but it’s true. Abercrombie’s rich fantasy world owes a lot of debt to Martin’s. After all, both series are ones in which magic is largely pushed to the background and minimized; both focus on anti-heroes (at best) and misfits; both juxtapose court intrigues and political scheming against much larger threats that could unravel the world as the characters know it. But more than anything else, there’s the sense of cynicism towards the genre that underlies both series. These are worlds in which traditional heroism barely matters, where old school honor and chivalry are a way to death – if you’re lucky.

And yet, to rely too heavily on that comparison is to miss out on all the ways in which The Blade Itself absolutely soars and stands on its own two feet. Over the course of this first novel of The First Law trilogy, Abercrombie sets up a fascinating world, but more than that, he dives deeply into their psyches, giving us a sense of these broken people. Our three main characters – Logen Ninefingers, Sand dan Glokta, Jezal dan Luthar – Abercrombie brings them to rich, detailed life, letting us see their scars, their psychic baggage, their complex motivations. But more than that, rather than embracing the nihilism and selfishness of the men, Abercrombie pushes them farther than that, finding an inner core of decency. It may be small, it may be only a piece of their cruelty or motivations, but it’s there. And that alone makes The First Law stand apart from Martin’s bleak, hopeless world where nothing – and no one – good can last.

More than that, though, Abercrombie brings a sometimes dry, sometimes dark, but sometimes genuinely funny sense of humor to the story, allowing his characters to be more than just another grim, broken-down soul. That’s maybe most true of Bayaz, the wizard figure around whom much of the book orbits. Bayaz is no one’s idea of a typical wizard, and that jarring inability to fit expectations pays off wonderfully again and again in the book, as Bayaz demonstrates both his ability and his willingness to use them as he sees fit. In other words, it’s all of Martin’s knack for turning the genre on its head, but done with a little more heart, a bit more humor, and every bit the imagination and talent.

If there’s a knock on The Blade Itself, it’s the sense that it’s an intentionally shapeless story at times, one where the lack of predictability makes it hard to make sense of at times. Is this the story of an impending war between the nations? Are the Flatheads a sort of White Walker analog – a monstrous “other” that lurks nearby? How does Ferro and her story tie in with everything going on around Adua? It’s hard to tell until near the end of the book, and even then, it’s a bit hard to get a sense of the bigger picture and how this will come together. But given how engaging, deep, and complex the characters are, how fascinating the world is, and how deep and layered the story is, I’m okay with that. I’m on board to see how this all fits together, and to see what else Abercrombie has going

The Anachronism Itself

Just to preface this... I'm not a particularly avid fan of the fantasy genre. I picked this up because, having just finished the fifth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, I saw it on a lot of 'recommended if you like' lists... and... well... at $2.99, it was worth giving a shot.

I enjoyed it enough to perhaps pick up the other books in the series at some point, but not enough to recommend. Coming back to the item page to write this review I noticed for the first time Abercrombie has a background in film editing.. this made perfect sense in retrospect because the work has a very cinematic sensibility. The way the action sequences are written feel like notes from a screenplay and a much of the dialogue has a buddy-comedy feel. The wry tone of many of the primary (POV) characters (relative to the bumbling secondary and tertiary characters) along with some informal language and sight-gag tropes ("err," "and so on," a nervous man fussing with his glasses, one of the main characters pulling a hulk-hogan) tended to run roughshod over my ability to suspend disbelief and take the events in the story as they came. It was like having a conversation with someone who uses text message shorthand in their speech. duh-buhl-yoo tee eff.

The story was generally entertaining, though (going back to the cinematic sensibility) this felt like the first act. The players were introduced and the conflict established but it didnt feel like much happened beyond getting various pieces in place. There were a few action sequences, none of which did much to advance the plot. Its is perhaps just enough to keep you reading... but any comparison to George RR Martin's works (or Tolkien's) is unfair. Abercrombie's world just isnt as well developed, complex or immersive.

Joe Zirilli knows how to make money....

....simply by writing a little monoghraph and selling it for 160 bucks....I am not an academic snub, but rather a hardworking engineer that works for a financial firm helping to harness neural networks and traditional forecasting methods for the preditction of stock markets in the middle east.

I give Mr. Zirilli's book 2 stars, because he does share some insights about how to go on about predicting trends and future stock market prices.

HOWEVER having said that, I ordered the book as an electronic copy ( NO I am not mistaken..same ISBN same no of pages etc ) for only 33 bucks and as I said it served me as a little monograph to get my feet wet. For 33bucks that's what I expect and that's what I got, therefore the 33 bucks is a fair price.

Did the book show me how to build and train a net that makes money? Not really, as it is too basic. I read around in supplementary literature on technical trading, econometrics, statistics and last but not least chaos theory to finally get to the point of being able to coax a 14 to 20 day forecast out of net that is useful.

Those complaining about theory, academic snubs, sigma notation and the like...you are trying to use science and mathematics to produce a non-trivial result. To use another reviewer's remarks about another title, if you want to learn to compose / arrange great music you should not complain that the text you are consulting contain notes flat and sharp signs and other symbolism. If you are trying to learn to fly an aircraft you should not complain about having to learn about aerodynamics, navigation and meteorology. Why should it be any different with neural nets?

Get a good book. There are some around that only require a pre-requisite of college calculus and statistics and they really do provide an excellent intro into neural nets. You may want to try the following titles ( preferably in the order they are presented ):

1.) Neural Network Design ( Hagan, Beale, DeMuth)

2.) Neural Smithing ( Reeds and Marks )

3.) Neural Networks for Pattern Recognition ( Cristopher Bishop )

These titles are all available from Amazon.

You can read 1.) rather selectively ( it is well organized ) so is 2.). 3.) should be read front to back if time permits but it is rather self contained. By the way all three books combined will probably set you back a similar amount of money than Joe Zirrili's 135 pages.

Timothy Masters has a few titles on Neural Nets and Time Series prediction. Also for hands on experience try the neural network toolbox in Matlab.

Good Starting Point for Financial Types

Contrary to the academic snobs this book presents a basic overview with enough general content to get you going in this area. If you are looking for a seminal book on the subject full of derivatives and summation signs compounded with footnotes to obscure books whose seminal ideas are now dated, then look elsewhere. In the retrospect the book is now 3 years old. Given that technology and markets have changed the book still remains current. For you techies still having to buy this book maybe you never applied what the author also taught in the book. Maybe a little realization that this book is also geared to make you money should have any potential buyer realize that the stock market is made up of all kinds of folks who even with no education become millionaires. Such is the difference between Europe and America. Great starting point book to move on to next level with.

About the Author
Rick Parker, PhD, served as division director and instructor at the College of Southern Idaho for 19 years. He is a member of various professional organizations, including the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA). Currently, he serves as the Director for AgroKnowledge, the National Center for Agriscience and Technology Education, a project funded by the National Science Foundation. Additionally, he is the Editor for the peer-reviewed NACTA Journal, which focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning. He also teaches and conducts workshops for AgrowKnowledge. He has been on the editorial review board for the American Society of Animal Science. Dr. Parker is also the author of the following Delmar, Cengage Learning texts: Introduction to Plant Science, Introduction to Food Science, Plant and Soil Science, and Equine Science (Third Edition). He is also the co-author of Fundamentals of Plant Science.

High School level, basic definitions no depth to concepts

This book is pretty typical of what a high school or middle school student would have for a textbook. A lot of definitions. It does cover everything with no depth and has chapters on aquaculture careers, laws and regulations, and aspects of marketing and business. Great for kids or for anyone trying to get an understanding of aquaculture who doesn't have a strong background in science.

Good for the inexperienced

If you already have a degree in biology, this book doesn't have much substance. If you are an aquaculture 'enthusiast' or an inexperienced 'professional' it covers a lot of the essential biotic and abiotic information that you'll need in order to be successful. Big plus: it's not completely riddled with scientific errors like many "aquaculture" books on the market. It's legit.
