Susan K. Johnsen, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology at Baylor University. She directs the Ph.D. program, and programs related to gifted and talented education. She is past-president of the Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented. She is editor of Gifted Child Today; coauthor of the Independent Study Program, RTI for Gifted Students, Using the National Gifted Education Standards for University Teacher Preparation Programs, Using the National Gifted Education Standards for PreK–12 Professional Development; and author of more than 200 articles, monographs, technical reports, and other books related to gifted education.

A good resource but very dry

I received this book as an Early Reviewer. This book will be a great resource for our gifted curriculum but is not a book that I would sit down and read for long periods of time. It is very heavy on the research and reads more like an academic study than a hands-on guide with tips and anecdotes which a teacher would enjoy. It is quite dry and difficult to read.

About the Author
Mike Loades is best known as the presenter of Weapons that Made Britain and Weapon Masters, but has appeared in dozens of other documentaries as an historical weapons expert and military historian. As a fight arranger he has choreographed fight and battle sequences (most of which involved swords!) for over a hundred television productions, plays and operas. He has also directed several historical documentaries for National Geographic and History Channel. He has lectured and written widely on arms and armour, contributing to both periodicals and books. Swords and Swordsmen is his first full-length, solo book. Although British, Mike now lives in the San Francisco Bay area with his wife and dogs, where he continues to work on various television and writing projects.

A view from a WMA and former JSA practitioner

First, a warning, this is my first review of a book. There are bound to be spelling errors, grammar issues and other such nonsense but I'm going to give it a go none-the-less.

I've been a fan of Mike Loades since finding his Weapons That Made Britain series. I've been sick and tired of seeing videos, movies, TV and other such media talking pure bunk about the weapons, armour and people of the past. Mike took time to actually do REAL research, to learn, to experiment and do as much as possible to recreate even a little piece of the past which taught me quite a few things I simply didn't know.

And that's exactly what this book did as well. I've always been focused on 1350-1430 or so in the European Martial Arts, and 1500-1650 in the Japanese Marital Arts world, so this book, opened up a whole new number of worlds for me, one where the sword was pivotal to survival, to countries, to wealth. And that says a lot right there.

The ability for Mike to really put aside all the stuff we THINK we knew about how swords were used and more importantly show us WHY they were used is simply invaluable to anyone who has even a passing interest in the history of not just the blade, but the man (or woman) behind the blade.

I spend most of my summer inside a suit of early 15th century armour, helping correct some of horrible things media has done in its view of the sword and armour, and Mike's book is yet another treasure trove of information I can use to better educate not just my students, but people with only a passing interest in the sword.

The book is well written, laid out in a chronological order, so the development of the sword, from its axe-like proto-history, to the cutlasses and sabers of the more modern era are all clear, concise and contain concrete examples of the people that used them. The illustrations and photographs are very well done, and do not distract the reader.

A Swordsman's View of Swords And Swordsmen

The study of the ideals of chivalry is almost insuperable from the study of arms and armor, and the men (and women) who used them throughout history. In that regard, the new book Swords And Swordsmen by noted historical interpreter Mike Loades (Pen & Sword Books, Oct. 2010, 494 pgs.) is a fascinating read for anyone who is enthralled by the lore of the sword, not just as an icon of the medieval knight, but as a symbol of the highest ideals of martial endeavor throughout history.

Fans of historically based television programming on the History, Discovery and National Geographic Channels will immediately recognize Loades from his many appearances as an expert commentator on a variety of shows. Perhaps just as recognizable as his face, however, is Loades' eager and enthusiastic voice as an advocate of active, engaging historical studies. His philosophy is based on the premise that history can't be truly understood from a distance - and Swords And Swordsmen is written in precisely this vein. The book straddles eras from Ancient Egypt during the rule of Tutankhamen (in 1336 B.C.) to the careers of J.E.B. Stuart and Gen. Custer. Almost every chapter focuses on a sword representative of a specific historical era, using the weapon to delve deeply, and sometimes very personally, into the background of a historical figure who carried and used the blade (or, at the very least, who probably carried and used one much like it).

In this way, readers learn about figures as prominent as King Henry V, Oliver Cromwell and George Washington, but also meet some lesser-known characters like King Raedwald of the East Angles, Japanese warlord Uesugi Kenshin, and Hussar Lt. Henry Lane who fought in the Battle of Waterloo. In each case (and many more) Loades figuratively lays the reader's hand on the hilt of the peculiar weapons carried by these notable (and in some cases, "notorious") individuals, and brings to life the struggles, desires, triumphs, and ideals that informed their use of the sword.

Interesting as that is, however, the thing that truly sets Swords And Swordsmen apart from other military history surveys is Loades' ability to reference his own experiences in the use of swords and the implementation of historical fighting techniques. What's it like to stand in a Viking-age shield wall, steal through the night like a ninja, or lead a cavalry charge with sabre in hand? Loades provides first-hand accounts of such incidents, drawn from his own experiences as a fight coordinator, stunt man, and historical interpreter - and his up-close, practical applications of swords in battle (simulated battle, at least) helps to shatter some long-held myths about swords and the warriors who used them.

Yet this personalized view of historical weaponry is (to use the appropriate metaphor) a double-edged sword: Although it lends a sense of liveliness to Loades' writing, it also lays out a tempting path to bypass documentable historical detail. Still, Loades generally does an admirable job of avoiding the "they must have done things like I did" assumption that, particularly in the lack of real historical evidence, can too often lead experimental historians astray.

But a sword is more than merely a lethal tool. Throughout Swords And Swordsmen, Loades' individual perspective similarly lends a unique air of authenticity in discussing not just the technical details of historical weapons and tactics, but also the principles and ideals that lie behind the image of the sword as the symbol of a champion, a protector and a "knight in shining armor." Recognizing how the chivarlric ideals have mutated throughout the ages, Loades infuses his study of the sword with observations of the sense of chivalry and honor that both inspired and were affected by (and, frankly, were just as often ridiculed or ignored by) figures such as Henry V, Emperor Maximilian, Shakespeare, Napoleon and J.E.B. Stuart (to name just a few).

great book

My cousin who actually collects antique arms and armour recommended this book. What a great read, instead of dry historical facts this was written more like a conversation over coffee.

I'd really like to meet the author because of his actual handling of swords and other real life experiences.

I hope he'll write another book and include many more of his personal experiences with arms and armour.

I'd like to go back to college and take classes just so I can maybe make a sword or two.

Hindi-English Dictionary

I purchased this book along with 'Beginner's Hindi Script' and 'Say it in Hindi'. It is very clear. Many other books and dictionaries I have looked at use cheap, rough paper and the type does not print well on the paper. The syllable characters in this dictionary are crisp and clear; large enough to see; the English transliteration is right next to the Devanagari script; examples of many kinds are included with many of the words so you can see all of the variants and idioms. I sometimes have a problem where I can't find a word I want to know the meaning of because it is perhaps written in a tense that I need to know the root of first. However, this is due to the fact that I am a beginning student of the language, I'm sure. Looking up the various words in this dictionary has certainly helped me learn the syllabary more quickly. This is the best Hindi dictionary I have found so far.

This is the best Hindi-English dictionary imaginable

My only regret is that there is no English-Hindi counterpart. This book includes all common usages of words in conjunction with verbs, as well as variations and related words. Also very helpful is the origin of each word, and its spelling in its language of origin. If you are student of Hindi, I could not recommend a better book. Mr. McGregor is my hero.

A great value resource

This dictionary is really worthwhile! Being only Hindi-English actually helped me, by forcing me to accelerate my learning of devanagari. Of course, after the devanagari spelling is the roman transliteration as well. Because it's only Hindi-English, you get a bigger number of entries in a still-manageable size. For the budget-conscious Hindi student, this is a must have.

Love, love, love this book! Just finished reading it and and will read it again at least one or two more times before the movie comes out 10/14/16. Can't wait for the movie even more so now! This book shines a light on so many topics that need to be not just recognized in our world today but they need to be addressed and in regards to human trafficking .. STOPPED!!! The "PRICELESS" movement that for King & Country promote and practice and challenge people with through their ministry and music is encouraging and inspiring. I am continually impressed with their ministry, their heart after God and heart for people! Love, love this book!!!

WE ARE PRICELESS IN HIS EYES

I just finished the book PRICELESS and I must say it was one book I couldn't put down. The subject of human trafficking is a story that needs to be told, not a pretty story, and I commend Joel and Luke Smallbone for telling it.
James Stevens, a man who had a good life until tragedy occurred and turned his life upside down. Feeling loss, staying angry, and becoming desperate, James takes on a job of driving a box truck across the country for a large sum of cash with no questions asked. The discovery of what his cargo is, takes him on a journey of saving the lives of two young women and countless others. You find a story of one man, James, who changes his way of thinking and finds his wavering faith that was lost. The characters are believable. I found myself pushing James along, even praying for him not to give up. His strength and determination kept me turning the pages to find the outcome. And his friend Dale, reminded me of a messenger from God helping James see his way. Antonia's faith in God and James to save her and Maria, unshakable. Will he make it in time to save these two? A love story unfolding within the pages of PRICELESS...a love not just between two people, but a love for others. A love that shows what it means to cherish, honor and respect another.
PRICELESS is a wake up call as to what is happening in our world, our country. The message from PRICELESS is this....we are ALL valuable in HIS eyes. And each and every one of are worthy of love and respect. One of my favorite lines from the book, "God knows that you're priceless."
I highly recommend reading PRICELESS and I'm looking forward to the movie.

Warning: it will make your stomach churn.

I don't write reviews unless it's for something that has bombed beyond belief and others should be warned, or has gone above and beyond expectations. And this has gone WAY beyond what I was expecting. It will churn your stomach, make your heart ache, and open your eyes to a world of hurt. But it will remind you that there is hope, and that someone does care. The story was incredible, and kept me going past midnight before I made myself put it down. About the Author
John Dole is a professor with the department of horticultural science at North Carolina State University. John has served as southern region director, treasurer, and executive advisor of the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG). He also co-coordinates the national ASCFG trial programs, which evaluate new annual, perennial and woody cut species. He has written hundreds of trade journal articles, scientific journal articles, and book chapters, as well as several other books. In 2000 he received the ASCFG's Allan Armitage Award.

 


Lane Greer received her PhD from North Carolina State University and taught at Mississippi State University. She honed her sustainable agriculture skills at the national sustainable agriculture information service (ATTRA) providing information to growers around the country on production and marketing of ornamentals. Simultaneously, she owned a cut flower farm, raising an acre of annuals, perennials, and woody shrubs. Her research has focused on the production and vase life of cut flowers. She has written over a hundred articles for publication in trade literature and on Web sites.

This has been an excellent resource for me, a beginner, entertaining the idea of marketing woody ornamentals. The authors have shared a lot of detailed information from their years of experience and other growers of woodies. I love the sections "Why You Should Grow It" and "Why You Shouldn't" . Also the Quick Guide in the back and Other Resources - invaluable. I would highly recommend this book to others like me who are just starting out to grow and market woody ornamentals. With the initial investment of time and money in planting trees and shrubs and having to wait a few years before making a profit, one cannot afford to make many mistakes. So why not rely on these seasoned experts. Reading the book is like having the authors as distant mentors.

True Foods, needs a little help before 2nd edition

Andrew Weil is a healthy life-style guru, and I have purchased several of his books. It's clear to me that several of the reviewers have been given complimentary copies of the book to review and they simply proceeded to write a book report without having made any of the recipes. Often times, as in this case, the recipes for a restaurant quantities are not accurately translated for home use. For a seasoned pro, this may not be a problem. However, if you plan on giving this gift to a beginning cook, they may have problems with it. I have made 12 recipes so far, and the wonderful part about most of them is the abundant use of fresh whole foods, and the frugal use of fats, salt and sugar.

If I had edited the book in advance, I would have advised that a "crustless quiche" is more commonly known as frittata on page 25. I would suggest you omit the baking soda in the Carrot-Parsnip-Zucchini Bread on page 26,and add 1 Tablespoon of baking powder instead. One medium carrot and one medium parsnip and one small zucchini does not mean anything. I used 4 cups total shredded vegetables. That works. Also,you must line your bread pans with paper if you are using olive oil instead of butter to keep the bread from sticking. Or use non-stick pans.

The Fattoush Salad on page 70 is a winner and will appeal to almost everyone. The Moroccan Chicken Salad on page 87 is the best low fat version of chicken salad you will ever find. You will never guess that it has so little mayonnaise! The Sweet Potato-Poblano Soup is wonderful but 3 quarts of water to 5 vegetables has got to be an error. If you double the amount of vegetables you will be fine, otherwise you will end up with a lot of extra broth and nothing like the photograph!

The Bison Chili on page 110 is excellent, with a flavor profile enhanced by a wide array of herbs, spices, and chocolate! The Miso-Marinated Black Cod on page 132 was not worth all the trouble when the fresh fish would have tasted better if it were naked! I would only mask the fish if it were not perfectly fresh.

The Chicken Enchiladas on page 145 were fabulous. The fresh tomatillo salsa is easy and incredibly delicious. You may want to double the recipe and make a blender full. The recipe neglected to tell you what to do with the corn after you browned it, but assumes you will figure it out. Contrary to the recipe you will need 3/4 cup of salsa, not 1/4 for the bottom of the pan, which should be 9 X 12 since they didn't specify. And you will have plenty of filling for 12 6" tortillas, not just 6 as the recipe reads.

The photography is beautiful but doesn't always relate to the recipe. Why show steel cut oats next to a recipe for granola that calls for old-fashioned rolled oats?

"True Foods", is evidence that Andrew Weil's recipes have evolved to the point where there is absolutely no sacrificing flavor for health. True Food will introduce you to new techniques, new food combinations, and new ingredients. That's a big accomplishment for any cookbook!

A mixed bag of pretty-darned-cool and "...but will I ever make this?"

When I was offered a copy of this cookbook, I jumped at the chance to review it. After all, I've been a Health Food Person since the 80s, when "eating healthy" meant carrot loaf and adding a tablespoon of brewer's yeast to everything. (Thankfully, we all got better at it.) True Food's goals of seasonable and sustainable align with my own, too.

Plus, the True Food restaurants are near me, here in Scottsdale. I've been to them several times, and would probably have said Yes to the cookbook just for the recipes for their drinks. (There's a nonalcoholic ginger-fizz drink sweetened with agave that I really like.) The problem is: I stopped going to the restaurant because they use olive oil a bit too much; since my husband is extremely allergic to it (not YOUR problem), we get tired of playing 20 Questions with the wait staff. But that made me more enthusiastic about the cookbook, since obviously at home I can use any oil I want.

I've spent several weeks with this cookbook and... I have mixed feelings. I really like the goals it sets, but too few of the recipes make me say, "Yum, let's make that for dinner tonight!" Either they are fussy, or they use ingredients that are hard to find even for this Scottsdale foodie. (Why yes, I *DO* do all my shopping at Whole Foods and gourmet markets.) I appreciate cookbooks that introduce me to new ingredients, such as sea buckthorn and samphire, but if *I* can't find them, they may be out of reach for you.

Plus, Dr. Weil, who inspired the restaurant, is well known for his own dietary recommendations, some of which don't match mine. Some do: smaller portions of seasonal, organic ingredients; less emphasis on a big slab of moo (more fish, heavy on the veggies and grain). He advises to cut back on sweets and eat smaller portions (which I do, my chocolate reputation notwithstanding: Give me one perfect chocolate truffle, not a pound of M&Ms) but he doesn't make THAT big of a distinction between types of sugar. I've found, purely for myself, that I'm fine with agave, honey, maple syrup, but refined sugars are best left to once-in-a-great while.

The bottom line, though: Do I want to cook these recipes? Do YOU?

I usually try to cook two or three dishes from a cookbook before offering an opinion. As it turns out, I made only one so far, and it turned out quite well. The curried cauliflower soup is vegan, out-of-the-ordinary, and delicious. In addition to the cauliflower and curry powder, it uses a third of a cup of raw cashews, a can of coconut milk, and a few more spices (turmeric, cumin, and a touch of cinnamon). It was fast enough to put together for a weeknight meal, and reheated easily for lunch. (Come to think of it, it's also rather frugal.) I still haven't made the drink that had made me shout YES to the review offer, but it'll happen: Basically it's soda water, fresh lime juice, agave nectar (you can find that in most health food stores, even one of the warehouse stores occasionally), and pulverized ginger juice (e.g. blend fresh ginger with water, strain). (Several of the drinks are alcoholic, if that's more your speed, such as a tamarind margarita, or the Peacemaker with honey, black tea, lemon juice, rye whiskey, and Averna liqueur.)

I have bookmarks in several more recipes, but they've been stuck in the "Maybe I'll get around to it" category. Tofu curry with cauliflower, rice noodles, and cashews, for instance. Miso-marinated black cod, which must wait for me to see that fish in the store. Roasted butternut squash, apple, and pomegranate salad with balsamic vinaigrette.

But some are suitable only for a leisurely afternoon puttering in the kitchen. The summer vegetable casserole was briefly a candidate for the Thanksgiving table (we have a vegetarian guest every year and cater to his needs... I'm such a nice friend), with layers of an eggplant relish, fennel braised in orange juice and wine, squash and tomato, and a Parmesan-bread crumb topping. Others just don't appeal to me (sorry, I'm not a kale girl). And then, of course, there's the challenge of finding ingredients; I can get halloumi nearby but I'm not going to bet that's the case for you.

One thing I would like, given the health-conscious premise for this cookbook, is nutritional information for each recipe. Dr Weil may not count calories, carbs, etc., but some people -- including many of the health-conscious people who'll be drawn to this cookbook -- do.

Still, I _like_ this cookbook. I appreciate its sensibilities, even if I don't use it very often. If you have a good source of organic produce and some exotic ingredients, it might be just the ticket for you.

A flexitarian delight and then some

Sam Fox is a restaurateur. Michael Stebner is an executive chef and of course Andrew Weil is a legendary health guru with international tastes and a surprising expertise in the kitchen. What they've done together aside from writing this book is found and operate True Food Kitchens, a growing chain of restaurants where the emphasis is on food that is (as in the subtitle of this book) "Seasonal, Sustainable, Simple, Pure."

What this means can be discerned by going over the recipes in the book. This is not a vegan or even a vegetarian cuisine. This is an international cuisine fit for an epicurean flexitarian! The emphasis is on the fresh, bold, and organic with little meat, some chicken and a bit more fish. Many of the recipes are inspired by Weil's concept of the "Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid." There's a color photo of the "pyramid" in all its glory on page 46--no words, just the foods themselves. At the apex is chocolate (!) followed by red wine, food supplements, spices like ginger and chiles, and foods like fish, beans, avocados, mushrooms, veggies and fruits, etc. (You can see the labeled pyramid at Dr. Weil's website.) At the base of the pyramid which represents foods that should form the bulk of our diet are the veggies and fruits.

Weil says that he used the Mediterranean diet as a template in his design of the pyramid. He explains that these foods and not the highly processed foods found in the stores and in most restaurants lead to less inflammation in the body and to a healthy life style. The cuisine (I'd call it an international cuisine based on healthy food choices), Weil writes, "includes fewer foods of animal origin, except for fish and high-quality dairy products like yogurt and natural cheeses." (p. 47)

Yes, this is the middle way of moderation between veganism and bacon-corn syrup gluttony (if you will). Vegetarians are not going to be thrilled and vegans are going to be offended. But there are recipes for vegans dishes (e.g., Butternut Squash-Apple Soup with a cashew base on page 97) in contrast to, well, the recipe for a "Bison Umami Burger" on page 140.

Dr. Weil doesn't eat beef but believes that bison is a healthy substitute. I would say, perhaps--at least for now until and if it becomes popular, and then the food producers will make it as unhealthy as commercially produced beef. There's a recipe for the (vegan) "Umami Sauce" on page 236. Key ingredients are tamari, nutritional yeast and garlic.

I am writing this before dinner and wow are the recipes making me hungry! This is the perfect cook book for me since I've long followed a similar diet and much prefer cooking at home with my choice of ingredients done my way to going out to eat. But compared to the authors of this book I'm just a chef's helper with a limited range. Weil, Fox and Stebner demonstrate a deep and abiding knowledge about and love for food. We're all foodies under the skin, but some like Weil are really in another league. I've read and reviewed several of Dr. Weil's books, always favorably and always with some reservations. I'll skip the reservations here (since they are few and insignificant) and just say that I am amazed at Weil's understanding of food and his vast experience. He has clearly spent a good portion of his life experiencing food, thinking about food, eating food and cooking food! (And yes I thought he was doing yoga.)

The book begins with an Introduction that is an interesting conversation about food and the restaurant business among Weil, Fox and Stebner. Next comes "The True Food Pantry," a list and description of somewhat unusual but characteristic ingredients, such as agave nectar, chiles, flax meal, tahini, etc. Then come the recipes in chapters entitled, "Breakfast," "Appetizers," "Salads," and so on to "Desserts" and "drinks." There are mini essays on such things as "True Whole Grains" (page 21) and chapter intros written by Weil or Stebner. The recipes are also introduced and/or commented upon by either Weil or Stebner identified by their initials.

The book is beautifully designed and edited, full of easy to read bits of information about food and diet. The full color photos of the foods are gorgeously mouth-watering.

--Well, okay, one reservation: this cuisine requires not just a love of food but the time and energy to go to good markets on almost a daily basis and to keep on hand (and fresh!) a number of specialty ingredients. I'm thinking of the pickled cucumbers, the umami sauce, the dashi sauce (requiring, e.g., kombu and bonito flakes) and a variety of chiles and of course fresh fruits and vegetables. The only way you can achieve this is to really immerse yourself in food and to love what you're doing. But I think the reward is well worth the effort because not only will you be eating healthier, you will find that you can eat reasonable amounts of delicious food with relish, and because you have spent that extra energy shopping and cooking, you will have help in keeping a healthy weight.

Favorite substitution: Kalamata olives for anchovies in the Vegetarian Caesar Dressing on page 233.

Favorite tip: When toasting nuts realize that they are still cooking after being removed from the heat source. So as a general rule, "once you can smell the nuts, they are done." (p. 243) I learned this the hard way with sesame seeds and foraged Digger Pine nuts.

In a nutshell, this is now easily my favorite cook book.
