A SIMPLE MASTERPIECE WHICH REMINDS US THAT ONE SMALL IDEA HAS THE POWER TO CHANGE THE WORLD!

Even if this lovely picture book had not won an independent Publishers Gold Book Award, it would still deserve every bit of the attention which it has begun to receive. A young boy has something precious which he himself has created -- an idea, and despite the fact that others discourage and disregard it, he finds the inner strength to hold on to his idea, to nurture it, and to begin to keep it company. Eventually his idea goes on to do something really special...it shows the boy that it and therefore, he, has the power to change the world.

If the reader peeks carefully at the little idea, one can see it begin to grow. It begins its life looking like an egg, a perfect metaphor as we wait for the idea to hatch, or break out of its confining shell. The boy's egg is a yellow-gold color that makes one think of the sun or of light...just as light illuminates, so can a nurtured idea. The discriminating reader (often an observant child!) may notice that midway into the story, the idea egg appears to be sporting a little crack, which continues to spread. Does this suggest that his idea is cracking or breaking? Oh no, reader...this little idea is about to sprout wings, burst from its shell, and take wing to change the world!

Lovely sepia colored illustrations provide a perfect backdrop for the little golden idea as it grows. This book is gorgeous on all levels -- visually, emotionally, and creatively. A perfect gift for any child, or for any adult who enjoys a reminder once in a while (like me!) about the best aspects of our humanity.

The story, gorgeously illustrated, takes a complex process and distills it in such a tender way so you will no longer be afraid of your most precious, earth-changing ideas. As an innovation coach for business and community leaders, this process of exploring, growing and freeing ‘out of the box’ ideas is usually a long-term process. In just a few beautifully illustrated pages, the book accomplishes what days and weeks of workshops try to. I am thrilled to be able to use it in my own work. A real treasure.

What a great little book!

I purchased this book to read for March is Reading month for 2nd grade - We All loved it so much!!!! I gave the kids small wooden eggs with the word idea stamped on. I plan on reading this again for other grades - highly recomend!!!

Dr. Daniel A. Langer and Prof. Dr. Oliver P. Heil (Ph.D.) on why they wrote this book: "Part of the purpose of this book is to decode luxury by answering the questions about what luxury is and how to manage it. We present several new findings that significantly broaden the scope of luxury research, providing one of the first comprehensive dissections of luxury."  In this book the authors carefully analyze the nature of luxury in a systematic manner for the purpose of developing a sound basis for marketing luxury products and understanding luxury markets. The fundamental propositions and characteristics of luxury are presented, and the primary luxury 'drivers' are described. More specific areas of the luxury experience are then analyzed in more detail.  These include quality and aesthetics, the purchase situation, the consumption situation, the cultural and social frame, consumer segmentation, geographical differences, product categories, and branding. It concludes with strategic advice to marketing managers.  Driven by the finding that hypothetically all categories could have a luxury tier, and the conclusion that many luxury brands are not managed appropriately, the authors provide managers with comprehensive toolsets and strategies to manage luxury in a more competitive, profitable and sustainable way. 

About the Author
Daniel André Langer is Senior Vice President & GM North America at Henkel Beauty Care. Before that he fulfilled several international responsibilities at Henkel, including Corporate VP SBU Body Care as well as Marketing Director in Germany, Japan & International Hair Care. He is also a Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer at the University of Mainz. The author holds a Ph.D. and a Masters degree from the University of Mainz. He also studied in Madrid and attended executive education at Harvard, IESE and Thunderbird. He presented his research on luxury and innovation at several leading research conferences and events in the USA and Europe. Dr. Langer’s research focuses on deepening our understanding of luxury. Importantly, the marketing of regular products can benefit substantially from luxury research findings in terms of identifying different and creative strategies enhancing innovativeness, competitiveness and profitability of fast moving consumer goods. Oliver Heil is the Chaired Professor of Marketing at the Johannes Gutenberg-University of Mainz (Germany). He holds a Ph.D. as well as a Masters degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. The author taught at Wharton, UCLA, IU, Lingnan and HKUST. His publications appeared in leading scientific journals and he co-authored several books. As the recipient of various academic honors he currently serves on several boards and lectures on a variety of topics. Prof. Heil is working on identifying optimal sizes and formats for limited editions of luxury products and identifying causal factors of luxury design. Also, he is working on applying the luxury index toward regular products such as fast moving consumer goods as well as luxury products to enhance branding strategies. Prof. Heil is organizing a global luxury event bringing together managers, researchers and customers dealing with luxury products. The authors are co-directors of the Center for Research on Luxury at the University of Mainz, which has the ambition to pioneer the research on luxury and to provide world-class publications and education on the topic. Great book on Luxury

This book is a truly comprehensive publication about luxury. Those who ever wondered what luxury is all about will get all their questions answered.
I would recommend it both for students and professionals.
An aspect I found particularly striking is the ability of luxury goods to provide some kind of shelter and protection in social contexts. Another is the enhancement of attractiveness. And there are many more. The authors argue that those hidden aspects provide a perceived value to consumers that exceed by far "normal" perceived values by observable product attributes, hence increasing the willingness-to-pay.

This book, “Luxury Marketing and Management” by Dr. Daniel A. Langer and Prof. Dr. Oliver P. Heil, is an instructive interesting read that pulls back the curtain on managing luxury goods to improve both their profitability and sustainability. Dr. Langer and his co author have precisely dissected the layers of luxury to provide the manager of these types of goods insightful and thorough guidelines for creating, maintaining and growing a luxury brand.

Real world examples of luxury brands such as Rolex® watches, Louis Vuitton® bags and Bentley® automobiles spice up the text with lessons that any marketing manager interested in the subject can easily master. And the bonus is that the guidelines and insights can also be applied to the marketing of more ordinary consumer goods or goods that may provide an entry into the luxury market for future consumers. As the authors insightfully state, “. . . all categories have the potential to develop a luxury tier.”

One of the great things about being in an industry for many years is, if you are open-minded, the possibility exists to learn about your profession anew. I've been in the luxury industry for 30 years as a manager, buyer, salesperson and merchandiser. Daniel Langer's book has provided me with new insights on luxury; what motivates consumers, how they think, how they evaluate and perceive luxury and most important what factors make them purchasers. We are, after all, in an irrational business. A certain amount of suspension of disbelief must take place when someone is making a significant purchase. Langer's booked is backed with solid research and delineates the factors about consumer behavior that anyone in the luxury business needs to know. This is a very useful tool for owners, managers, buyers, salespeople...anyone involved in presenting and selling luxury goods.

A summary look at one of America's most influential Founding Fathers

In political debates, all parties frequently invoke the Founding Fathers to support their claims or refute the claims of their opponents. One of the Founding Fathers who is seldom mentioned, though, but one of the most influential in terms of the current structure of the federal government, is Alexander Hamilton. The first Secretary of the Treasury and the mind behind the Federal Reserve, Hamilton was an illegitimate child who came to the colonies from the island of Nevis in the British West Indies as a teenager. Through his skill and tenacity he rose to prominence, thus making him an exemplar for the role that immigrants have always played in this country’s history; a fact that certain modern politicians seem to conveniently ignore.

Perfect instaread to learn a little bit of history

Instaread offered me a sample for my honest review. I am somewhat of a enigma, I love history, but I'm not a huge fan of reading. Even if I was a fan, I don't have enough hours in the day to read lengthy books. Thats where I've found Instaread summaries to be a real life saver. Some Instareads can only give you a flavor of what the real text is about (because the original topic may contain too much detail), but this one was just perfect in that it summarizes a summary of someone life (no text could ever be complete about a person). It gives me enough to get an understanding about this important person in history to the point that I don't feel I really need to dig deeper. It did, however, peak my interest in the federalist papers, which he helped author. Great little read on this important person!

Don't drop Hamiltons to read about this Hamilton

How would you like to pick the brain of one of the founding fathers? It would be pretty sweet, and I know all of us would enjoy it. With the current political torrent from the 2016 election in full swing, every side and candidate seems to understand the Constitution better than us. "Alexander Hamilton" is a sprawling biography of one of the most important figures in American history, and is based on copious original research. As a political theorist, activist, and cabinet member, Hamilton dedicated his life to the American dream.

This Instaread review captures the biography with a summary, analysis, insight into character relationships, and dissection of literary themes. It is a great read for anyone in the realm of political science, a student of US government, or a history buff. I really enjoyed the section that analyzed foreignness and patriotism. Because Hamilton was born in the West Indies, many of his contemporaries dismissed his relevance and undermined his trustworthiness. Despite Hamilton's foreign birth, he was as patriotic as anyone in his day. America's history of distrusting foreigners dismisses their ability to feel patriotism for this amazing country.

I highly recommend this review, it impacted my opinions on a man who influenced the Constitution. I was given a copy of this book to review.

Pretty good quick handbook, but not as thorough as pocket Barash.

This book is to the point and has just the stuff you need. It's easy to read and a great resource to read through. I have noticed that it doesn't talk about a number of things, such as EKG, but I understand that this is a concise reference and they aren't trying to cover EVERYTHING. Because it doesn't cover everything, it isn't my #1 quick handbook resource (pocket Barash), but it is very handy. The sections aren't always very intuitive either, so sometimes I flip around for a while trying to find details topics that for some reason aren't in the index.
Overall, I would recommend it. It is a great resource for quick facts, but you will sometimes come across questions where this book doesn't have the answer.

Perfect for med student on rotations

Going into anesthesia for medical residency (I hope anyways :) ) . I really don't think there is one perfect book to get for rotations, but this little guy helped me answer almost all the pimp questions that didn't start with "I really don't expect you to know this, but...". This is a pretty easy read in a great format (question answer based).
