A Jewel of a Book, Badly in Need of Reprinting, An Excellent Compendium of Original Sources

Danielou is a self taught French Sanskritist who moved to India in the 1930's, learned Hindi and Sanskrit and became an accomplished vina player. After returning from India after partition he was the first head of UNESCO's world music organization and truly one of the founders of the world music genre. To him we owe our acquaintance with Ravi Shankar and many other musicians from non-European countries. He was also deeply involved in the practice of yoga. He was a disciple of the guru Karpatri Swami (mentioned in Autobiography of a Yogi of Paramahansa Yogananda) and was the first Westerner ever initiated as a brahmin in the Lingayat tradition of Shaivism.

This book is a jewel and is badly in need of re-printing. I have used it since the 1970's. It is an excellent compendium of quotations about detailed aspects of yoga from the broad sweep of original yoga texts, many of which are hard to find in translation. In that respect it is a very traditional account of the practice and of increasing value these days as yoga is more and more Westernized and it seems that every (unenlightened) one and his brother has some opinion about what yoga should be. These are original source materials with clear translations. Some scholars take issue with Danielou's work on ideological grounds, given his sympathies with the Hindu Nationalist movements started, in part, by his guru. He is also rigorous about not excluding sexuality from aspects of dealing with erotic energies where it belongs and where the traditions become distorted by blotting them out. These methods are, after all, about learning how to transmute those energies. To the mind of this scholar, it only enhances his integrity. Highly recommended to the serious student of the yoga tradition.

Ordinarily like this authors work. Usually brillant. Thos was only mildly interesting.
I was misled by the reviews.
Its a Miss in my opinion. If you ate looking to own all of this authors work then buy it.

Great text for student new to IHC

This text starts with a great explanation about antibodies and how they work. I bought this text for undergraduate and graduate students with little or no understanding about IHC concepts and methods; it was very helpful. If I had to complain about something it would be that only very sparse attention was paid to antigen unmasking and there was no protocol. I would recommend this text to anyone with no to mid-level experience with IHC. The text is very well done.

About the Author
Eric Mash is a professor of psychology at University of Calgary in Canada, where he enjoys teaching undergraduate classes in abnormal child psychology, behavior modification, and developmental psychopathology as well as graduate classes in clinical psychology, specifically in child psychopathology, child assessment, and child psychotherapy. He earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Florida State University, and completed his residency in clinical child psychology at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. Eric commits much of his time and energy outside of the classroom to researching the topics of abnormal child psychology, child and family assessment, child psychotherapy, and child development. Particularly interested in attention-deficit disorder and conduct problems, and in families in which children have been physically abused, Eric has contributed and published many journal articles and books on these topics. He is also a Fellow of the American and Canadian Psychological Associations, and has served on the editorial boards of many prestigious journals and grant agencies at local and federal levels.

David Wolfe is the first recipient of the RBC Investments Chair in Developmental Psychopathology and Children's Mental Health at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, University of Toronto, and the Academic Director of the Center for Research on Violence Against Women and Children. He enjoys teaching abnormal child psychology, child assessment and psychotherapy, and community psychology to undergraduate students. He earned his Ph.D. at University of South Florida in Tampa, and completed his residency in clinical psychology at University of Mississippi Medical Center. David is a founding member of the Center for Research on Violence Against Women and Children, and also a fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), where he served as president of Division 37, Child, Youth, and Family Services. He lends special focus to child abuse, domestic violence, and development and developmental psychopathology, as well as the impact of early childhood trauma on later development in childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood. Currently David focuses attention on studying ways to prevent violence in relationships with adolescents.

Nicely done history of arms and armor BUT...

Enough of the Bayeaux Tapestry already!!! Many reviewers spoke in glowing terms of ALL the great illustrations/photos in this book. Although some ARE wonderful, I lost count of how many were of the Bayeaux Tapestry!!! Sure, we don't want to miss what we can learn from this piece of needlework, but I think anyone who wants REALLY great photos of armor should get the book Masterpieces of European Arms and Armour in the Wallace Collection or the book Arms and Armor in the Art Institute of Chicago (I very happily own BOTH). Now this is NOT to say that this is not a great book about the history of arms and armor. It DOES seem to be well researched and engagingly written. But just to forewarn you about what to expect from the pictures.

Great book for any collection

I love this book simply for it's many illustrations and descriptions. I do a lot of costuming work so it's great to have a reference that both explains and shows the armor. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in an overview of medieval armors.

Forwarding a new, dialectical conception of repetition that draws together progress and return, motion and stasis, agency and subjection, creativity and compulsion, this book reinterprets the political grammar of four forms of repetition central to minority discourse: trauma, pastiche, intertextuality, and self-reflexivity. Working against narratives of multicultural triumph, the book shows how texts by Theresa Cha, Susan Choi, Karen Tei Yamashita, Chang-rae Lee, and Maxine Hong Kingston use structures of repetition to foreground moments of social and aesthetic impasse, suspension, or hesitation rather than instances of reversal or resolution. Reading Asian American texts for the way they allegorize and negotiate, rather than resolve, key tensions animating Asian American culture, Repetition and Race maps both the penetrating reach of liberal multiculturalism's disciplinary formations and an expanded field of cultural politics for minority literature.
