About the Author

Dr. David Goetsch is a full professor of Quality, Safety, and Business Management.  He is the author of 75 books, six of which have been translated into foreign languages including Korean, Indonesian, Spanish, and Malaysian.  Dr. Goetsch spent ten years in the private sector in quality-related positions before entering higher education full-time.  His other books include Total Quality Handbook, Implementing Total Quality, Understanding ISO 9000 and ISO Standards, Occupational Safety and Health, Basics of Occupational Safety and Health, and Project Management for Engineering and Technology.  

 

Stanley Davis is a former manufacturing executive with Harris Corporation and an adjunct professor of quality.  He is co-author of several other books with Dr. Goetsch including Understanding ISO 9000 and the ISO Standards and Implementing Total Quality.

About the Author
Amber Sayer, MS, CPT is an exercise psychologist and certified personal trainer. She grew up in Amherst, Massachusetts and made a mark for herself in high school as a successful cross-country and track runner. Sayer uses her eight years of experience working in the fitness industry and fifteen years as a competitive distance runner to impart expertise in running, exercise training, and nutrition as an independent fitness professional in New York City. While this is Sayer’s debut memoir, she has enjoyed writing for years.

Engaging, inspiring, and thought-provoking cover to cover

Whether you suffer from an eating disorder, love someone who does, or just work with kids, Sayer's book is a must-read. It's emotionally draining, and yet the series of honest, well-chosen vignettes made it impossible to put down. Not only is Sayer brave enough to tell her story in the raw, but she does so with such thoughtful writing and poise that that you root for her from cover to cover. You won't be disappointed.

A valuable and honest story

Amber Sayer shares a difficult experience in this book with great honesty. It's such an important story to tell. As another reviewer said, I think this is a valuable book for any young athlete to read, but also for anyone struggling with a personal difficulty such as addiction or problems with self esteem. I'm sure that Sayer's courage in confronting her disease will be inspirational to people trying to do the same, as well as informative and comforting for the people in their lives.

thought provoking and insightful

A glimpse inside the mind of someone who battled a mental illness and has opened their wounds to let others see and hopefully grow from insight and thoughts. This book may focus on eating disorders and specifically anorexia, but it touches on something deeper than even that, self worth and the role it plays in all our lives. The value a being has on this earth is about so much more than outward appearances and few of us know the true value of our selves. This book uncovers one person's battle to overcome her own demons and shows others how to maybe express their inner thoughts as well.

It was a wonderful book this series does not disappoint the descriptions are perfect the characters well developed and the story line is fast paced and thrilling. If you want a series that you can't put down then the world of Zotikas is for you! I can't wait for the next installment.

Dr. Levy did an amazing job of distilling many decades of research on vitamin C. In spite of the compelling research, I found myself being skeptical about the power of vitamin C--that is, until I put myself on a 6-week (and running) regimen of 10,000 mg daily of vitamin C complex--without any ill side effects. The outcomes have been astounding: 1) My prostate health has been restored. 2) My chronic skin condition (acne/folliculitis) has improved by 75% in six weeks--after 30 years of taking an array of antibiotics and other conventional drugs such as Accutane, and of using various topical solutions. 3) My irritable bowel syndrome--probably the result of years of taking antibiotics--has not bothered me in one month. 4) My anxiety level has fallen sharply. Dr. Levy's book and his lectures on YouTube provide a wealth of information. If you or someone you care about suffers from a chronic or acute disease, and if conventional medicine has failed (or if you prefer alternative medicine in the first place!), you owe it to yourself to read and study this book carefully, and do further research on vitamin C, particularly liposome-encapsulated vitamin C. I hope that you experience profound results like I have! Thank you Dr. Levy!

The Little-Known Secrets of Vitamin C

"Curing the Incurable" is one of the most heavily referenced books on health, mostly references of medical journal papers.

Dr. Levy tells the story of two boys playing hide and go seek in a cornfield, who were sprayed with a powerful pesticide, parathion.
One boy was taken to the local ER and passed away. The other was taken to a practitioner of Vitamin C therapy and was injected intravenously with 100,000mg of Vitamin C, and went home for supper.

This book documents the uses of large-dose Vitamin C therapy upon disease and poisoning. I personally take a big dose of the pills when I just don't feel right.

A great book by a courageous doctor.

I have used vitamin C and other vitamins, minerals and amino acids quite extensively and I have good reasons believe that my arterial blockages were controlled because of it. I have considered myself as a very well informed micro-nutrient nut. I have always felt so very discouraged by the constant barrage of anti-micro-nutrient propaganda for so many years. But this book is an astonishing slap in the face of those who deny the veracity of vitamin C. It was heartening to learn that 20,000 articles had been published on this substance till 2002 and almost 350 papers are published annually! Dr. Levy lists many infectious diseases and cancers that have been cured by it. He goes on to note what doses are required and what considerations go into adjusting them for individual cases. He also lists, in many cases, the success rates achieved by physicians. This is astonishing. Even more astonishing is the fact that not only is this substance not used in medical therapy, the profession is downright hostile to it. I have experienced that first hand through the condescending smiles of my own family physician.

After reading this book, the vitamin-nutrient detractors' lies lay exposed in front of me and that was very heartening. I can now hold my head high and with full confidence tell my contrarian physician that he is wrong. I recommend this book highly for all those who want to take responsibility for their own health and not succumb to the scare mongering of the vendors of poisonous concoctions.

My only reservation is that the book does not address the issue of congestive heart disease so eminently attacked by Drs. Mathis Rath and Linus Pauling. While this is only one disease left out among the many that are addressed, it is a huge epidemic and should have been dealt with quite extensively. This is the reason for my 4 star rating. But for that this book gets 5 stars from me.

Suffering and the female experience   The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of the most important 20th century painters, and one of the few Latin American artists to have achieved a global reputation. In 1983 her work was declared the property of the Mexican state.

Kahlo was one of the daughters of an immigrant German photographer and a Mexican woman of Indian origin. Her life and work were more inextricably interwoven than in almost any other artist’s case. Two events in her life were of crucial importance. When she was eighteen, a bus accident put her in hospital for a year with a smashed spinal column and fractured pelvis. It was in her sick bed that she first started to paint. Then, aged twenty-one, she married the world-famous Mexican mural artist Diego Rivera. She was to suffer the effects of the accident her whole life long, and was particularly pained by her inability to have children.

Kahlo’s arresting pictures, most of them small format self-portraits, express the burdens that weighed upon her soul: her unbearable physical pain, the grief that Rivera’s occasional affairs prompted, the sorrow her childlessness caused her, her homesickness when living abroad and her longing to feel that she had put down roots, profound loneliness. But they also declare her passionate love for her husband, her pronounced sensuousness, and her unwavering survival instinct.

About the Author
Andrea Kettenmann (born in 1959) studied art history in Gießen, Göttingen and Heidelberg before joining the art history department of the University of Hamburg. In 1986 she visited Mexico on a fellowship, and now lives there, working as a freelance art historian. She has now worked on a number of exhibitions and catalogues, including the catalogue for the retrospective on Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo’s husband, in Detroit.

Benedikt Taschen succeeded in producing a concise yet highly informative biography, which is an excellent departure point for people discovering Frida Kahlo's universe. Art and Spanish students alike will enjoy all the references to other written works, which will make their research easier. Let's not forget an excellent choice of pictures which supplement the photographic reproductions of the artist's work.The commentaries are equally useful. This book is an excellent basic to have in your bookcase and a great introduction to Frida Kahlo.

An introduction to Frida

The ambitious Taschen art series excels at giving an artists works in a nutshell, covering the biography of the artist as well as it's best known works. Following the succcesful formula that has brought you more than fifty artists, from Boteticelli to Andy Warhol, this book on Frida Kahlo is a basic primer. This is the perfect book for someone to learn a little something about the Mexican artist and popular icon of the familiar soaring bird eyebrows . The short biography covers the major events of her tumultous life and graphically displays her most well known works accompanied by some black and white photographs of her with husband Diego Rivera and other notables from her era. The organization and brevity of the book make for the basic cliff notes on Frida. Compiled and researched well the result is a tasteful book for the basics. The perfect book for the casual observer to find out if more information is needed to be learned about this fantastic Mexican artist. It is satisfying but if more detailed insight is needed I would recommend two other books. One is the book the editor relies upon heavily by Hayden Herrera which is the defintive book about Frida Kahlo entitled "Frida A Biography of Frida Kahlo." The other I would recommend for further exploration is by Martha Zamorra entitled Frida Kahlo: The Brush of Anguish." Zamorra's hard to find Spanish edition is superb and much better than the edited English version. Nonetheless, the Tashen version is a good quality book full of vibrant color on good paper printed in Germany on stock that will last many years. Recommended for the art student or anyone interested in this most tormented soul who left her mark in art for the world to enjoy.

About the Author

R.C. Hibbeler graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana with a BS in Civil Engineering (major in Structures) and an MS in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.

 

Hibbeler’s professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural and stress analysis work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, as well as Sargent and Lundy in Chicago.  He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana.

 

Hibbeler currently teaches both civil and mechanical engineering courses at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette. In the past he has taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana, Youngstown State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Union College.

Great Learning Tool

This textbook really helped me to learn structures. The book was easy to read and understand with pleanty of pictures along the way for visual representations of the concepts involved. Each step was clearly stated and explained. The example problems were very helpful and mostly easy to follow. Overall, a good engineering structures text.

This one's a keeper. I bought it for P.E. exam review, which it is very good for, but also good as an introduction to Structural Analysis. Up to date issue. Easy to read and understand, excellent example and practice problems. A nice book. The reviews I read on it were good compared to others. Glad I bought it.

Solutions Manual necessary

Like all his books, Hibbeler does a wonderful job organizing and laying out the material. However, also like his other books, the example problems in the chapter are not in the same realm of difficulty as the problems at the end of the chapter. With subject matter this difficult, it would be an excellent idea to acquire the solutions manual, a nearly impossible book to find. Good Luck!
