SOS Indeed
By corglacier7
First off, I'm very glad that I got this from the library and didn't waste my money.
This book hardly justifies a 12 year wait for some fans. 3 years, in my case. It's boring, repetitive, and doesn't even offer anything significant to justify its incredible length.
What about all the buildup, the incredible conflict we expected? What about Zolena, Jondalar's former lover, being a possible factor between Ayla and Jondalar? Nope, she has to be incredibly fat and thus sexually undesirable, an effectively neutered woman. Jondalar's former fiancee is portrayed as completely rabid and malicious, when she's more than entitled to a little resentment of Ayla and Jondalar. The man *jilted* her, after all. But no, if you dislike Ayla, that makes you rotten to the core.
The Zelandoni prejudice against the people of the Clan that we were all so afraid of? Dealt with in one tiny scene wherein all Zelandoni are ooing and ahhing over Ayla's sign language. Give me a break. That's disgustingly unreal, and a disgrace after all the hype about it for the past three books.
The "villains" are cardboard stereotypes. Those who aren't immediately enthralled by Ayla we *surprisingly* find are bad, evil people. I'm in mind of Frebec from "MH" here...he was a fully developed quasi-villain whose transformation was within the realms of belief. No such luck here. They're totally bad and have the utter gall to try and humiliate or hurt dear Ayla.
Ayla makes no faux pas, saves every situation with perfect panache, enchants everybody despite her having been raised by (and having had sex with) "animal flatheads". (Which everybody conveniently accepts despite long-standing prejudice that's been harped on for the past three books.) In fan fiction there is a word for a beautiful, incredibly talented, and universally liked perfect young woman. It's a "Mary Sue", and it is not a complimentary term.
Ayla's lost all depth she had in "Cave Bear" to become the original Cro-Magnon Mary Sue, perfect in every way. Every Paleolithic (and some Neolithic!) innovation can apparently be traced to her somehow: the atlatl (spear thrower), iron pyrite as a fire striker, animal domestication, the needle, the concept of conception via sexual intercourse being just a few.
I'm just waiting for her to invent the wheel. Though she probably will as First Among Those Who Serve the Mother (come on, you know she'll have the spot soon enough.) I much prefer the uncertain, definitely flawed and definitely human Ayla of "CotCB" instead of this prissy, power-hungry, perfect and boring woman. Give us a normal woman with fears, flaws, and all, instead of this laughable, inane Super-Ayla.
Jondalar is also disgustingly perfect, though he's basically just Ayla's stud and bodyguard. I'm also amused by the fact that the copious, purple-prosed love scenes seem to portray him as merely a one-trick pony. (So much for his prowess in the furs). This increasing trend towards nauseating perfection has annoyed me slightly since it began in "VoH" and has increased steadily with every book. Perhaps Thonolan should have survived that cave lion attack in Jondalar's place...
The characters have become cardboard, mere shadows of what they could have been, should have been. What they were promised to be when we first met them and they enchanted us. Many good books have been ruined with multiple steadily more awful sequels. Laurie R. King's "The Beekeeper's Apprentice" is one. "The Clan of the Cave Bear" is another. Ms. Auel should have left it at the end of "CotCB" and been remembered for that splendid masterpiece instead of cranking out ever worsening tripe *ad nauseum*, justifying it by, "It continues the storyline."
How about Ayla being an outcast from Zelandoni society because of her past? How about that causing strife with Jondalar, torn between love and his people? That was the book we should have received, the book that previous volumes promised us. Instead we find the couple happily married and accepted, with unquestioned incredibly high status, showering benevolence and help upon all who are needy. Is this supposed to be a parody, a farce?
This book has no conflict. This book has no action. This book has positively no character development. This book practically deconstructs any good done in "CotCB" and "VoH". In fact, this book has absolutely *nothing* to justify spending 28 dollars and 12 years of anticipation. Any first-time writer sending this in would be firmly rejected and laughed at. "SoS" indeed--very apt. Send out the distress call and load the lifeboats, because this one plummets to the bottom fast under the weight of its own bloated self-importance. A solid F.

Repetition, repetition, repetition
By A Customer
Did I mention repetition?
I came away feeling somewhat lukewarm towards this much-anticipated book. Definitely, there were enjoyable parts to it, even parts that moved me to tears.
However, this book had a much different pace to it than what I've come to expect from this series. For every event, it reviewed experiences from the earlier books in tiresome detail. Later in the book, it even reviewed experiences that happened in the first part of the book.
And, really, how many times did we have to read about the people's first reaction to meeting Wolf, Whinney, and Racer? Yes, the animals were new to the people, but they were not new to the readers. Recounting the same reaction from the dozens of people that met the animals as well as the never-ending recitation of all the formal names and ties of the characters made for tedious reading.
I'll admit to skipping the long narratives to get to the action. In the earlier books I was fascinated at Ms. Auel's extraordinary talent of setting the scene with lots of rich details. In this book, it just seemed to make the story plod, maybe because I had read most of it before.
This book is a definite, if somewhat disappointing, read for those that have been captivated by this series. I find myself eagerly awaiting the next book. I only hope the author once again warms to her subject and the plot instead of relying on page-fillers from past books.

Poorly written, narcolepsy inducing, Ayla Sue wankfest
By Dark Helmet
My mom bought this book to read on a plane trip after reading the previous novels, and since I had also read them, she gave it to me after she was finished. Here for the first time I'm going to break one of my own personal rules and review a book that I didn't finish. I've read many hefty books with higher page counts in my time. Why didn't I finish Shelters of Stone? Because it's so drop dead boring, and because the main character's extreme Mary Sue-ish 'qualities' have really started to grate on my nerves.

I enjoyed Clan of the Cave Bear the best, since then things have been all downhill. With this book, things have fallen very far indeed. As other reviews have mentioned, there's an unbearable amount of repetition, not just of previous volumes, but repetition within the book itself. I'd be fine with it if it only happened once and then was skipped or abridged in later explinations, but no... We have to suffer through the complete retelling of everything every time. How many times can a reader suffer through the discovery of firestones without slitting their wrists with one? Now we know.

I gave up reading about halfway through, because nothing happened. And I mean really, nothing happened. Nada. Zip. They got to Jondalar's home. Everyone is over the fact that Ayla was raised by 'flatheads' in record time, wasting a plot point that had been built up in the last three books and turning it into a barely there afterthought. Anticlimactic is an understatement. Ayla gets introduced, gets tricked into wearing inappropriate clothing and there's a hunt. That's it. It took around 250 pages to get to this point. I've read better books that were over in fewer pages.

Then there's Ayla. A good 95% of the characters in the book (I hesitate to say 'story' because there really isn't one) seems to exist just to remark on how amazing she is. Repeatedly. Everyone she meets just has to swoon and realize how she's wonderful and gorgeous and smart and gosh just isn't she so darn peachy keen? Except, of course, they're supposed to be a villain, and then they just hate her on sight for no reason. Maybe they have a point though, because I've started to actively dislike her myself. Ayla never does anything wrong. Never makes mistakes that cause problems, never suffers from jealousy, never wishes that the perpetrators of a cruel practical joke played on her would fall off a cliff, never feels overwhelmed at all the people she's suddenly having to face, and is just the bestest ever at everything she ever tries to do. She just prances around the tundra acting like some kind of prehistoric female Thomas Edison celebrity superstar, complete with adoring groupie squad.

Speaking of the adoring groupie squad, what the heck happened to Jondalar? Over the course of three books he's gone from being at least an interesting (if overly angsty and guilt ridden) love interest to some kind of Ayla bodyguard/yes man/body temperature dildo. In fact, the only reason he's notable in this book is by his absence, mentally if not physically. The only time he has any input anymore is when it's in relation to Ayla. You'd think he'd be conflicted, or at least a little nervous about introducing a strange woman who's been raised by people that his relatives consider little better than animals, but no... He stumbles through SoS almost as an accessory to Ayla. The name Jonayla could almost fit Jondalar himself in this book.

Do yourself a favor. Avoid this book unless what you're looking for is a cure for insomnia.

Good overview but lacking detail
By EPO
It would be helpful to have more specific information for each area. Because the book covers such a large region, it is more of a broad overview without going into many details about any one place.

Great guide for planning
By Brazil Solo Traveler
Great guide for planning your trip. I used this one to plane for an upcoming trip to Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botwsana and South Africa.
It has good recommendations of places (i booked my hostels using this book and crosschecking with tripadvisor).
It has the same info from some country guides of Africa. I bought the one from Namibia and Botwsana and the Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. These 2 have basically the same info as this one but with a few more hotels and restaurants indications.
I would recommend buying this one as your have a multi-country guide and it's not so heavy (lighter than the LP's editions of India and Thailand)

Thick and hard
By LM
This magazine always bothered me, the size, the ads, the price... Phaidon did a great job with this book, I like it way better than the magazines. A bit pricey, but the book is way thicker and more impressive than I'd expected.

A response.

While reading the reviews of this book I was struck by a response to the lady who referred to this book as pornography:

To the lady with a bit too much class,

Whose review was abysmal. Alas!

You know what I think?

You need a drink.

To loosen you up, you tight*ss!

Essential for the conoisseur. . .
By Lynn Hoffman, author:Radiation Days: A Comedy
This is one of the several Legman editions that
swept together a bunch of earlier printed sources
and blended them with a trove of oral tradions.
The one on my desk right now has a 1992 copyright,
but identical volumes are available from the late
1950's.
This one includes a list of sources and variants
and a limerick-slanted rhyming dictionary. If
you've ever wondered what could permissibly happen
to the young man from Saskatchewan, this is for you.
As for the poor fellow named Blaine, well you'll have
to look it up yourself.

As another reviewer has noted, virtually all the five-
line masterpieces in this collection are scurrulous. Except
for a few that are sadistic. Or disgusting. The prospective
reader should be reminded that:

A limerick's a rhyme anatomical
In a form that is most economical
And the good one I've seen
So seldom are clean
And the clean ones never are comical.

--Lynn Hoffman, author of THE NEW SHORT COURSE IN WINE and
the novel bang BANG. ISBN 9781601640005

No "clean" limericks need apply
By Tubarick
I found this book after I had read "Rationale of the Dirty Joke". As a fan of this poetic form, I have scanned many collections of limericks, but his has to be, by far, the most comprehensive. The introduction explains the origin of the limerick, and the following chapters categorize the limericks by topic, such as excrement, zoophily, abuses of the clergy, organs, etc. The Man from Nantucket, Alice and her dynamite stick and Dave the Hermit are present and accounted for, plus some multi-limerick sagas such as the Farter from Sparta. What you will NOT find is the "Lady from Niger", the "Lady from Guam", and the clean "Man from Nantucket". I have seen a shorter, less complete book attributed to G. Legman. Don't bother with that one- this is the book to have.

The Human Advantage: A New Understanding of How Our Brain Became Remarkable (MIT Press), by Suzana Herculano-Houzel

Humans are awesome. Our brains are gigantic, seven times larger than they should be for the size of our bodies. The human brain uses 25% of all the energy the body requires each day. And it became enormous in a very short amount of time in evolution, allowing us to leave our cousins, the great apes, behind. So the human brain is special, right? Wrong, according to Suzana Herculano-Houzel. Humans have developed cognitive abilities that outstrip those of all other animals, but not because we are evolutionary outliers. The human brain was not singled out to become amazing in its own exclusive way, and it never stopped being a primate brain. If we are not an exception to the rules of evolution, then what is the source of the human advantage?

Herculano-Houzel shows that it is not the size of our brain that matters but the fact that we have more neurons in the cerebral cortex than any other animal, thanks to our ancestors' invention, some 1.5 million years ago, of a more efficient way to obtain calories: cooking. Because we are primates, ingesting more calories in less time made possible the rapid acquisition of a huge number of neurons in the still fairly small cerebral cortex -- the part of the brain responsible for finding patterns, reasoning, developing technology, and passing it on through culture.

Herculano-Houzel shows us how she came to these conclusions -- making "brain soup" to determine the number of neurons in the brain, for example, and bringing animal brains in a suitcase through customs. The Human Advantage is an engaging and original look at how we became remarkable without ever being special.

Review

Elephants have bigger brains than humans. So why are we more intelligent? Suzana Herculano-Houzel tells how her ability to count neurons gives us a radical new understanding of brain biology. Her science is convincing, fun, and inspiring. The Human Advantage is a game-changer.

(Richard Wrangham, author of Catching Fire: How Cooking Made Us Human)

In this highly readable and entertaining book, Herculano-Houzel summarizes her unique and important body of work. Her numerous discoveries regarding the number of neurons in animal and human brains lead her to conclude that human brains are fairly typical primate brains, though they are unusually large. As fascinating as the science is her vivid account of both her research adventures and her challenges.

(Georg Striedter, Professor of Neurobiology and Behavior, University of California, Irvine; author of Principles of Brain Evolution and Neurobiology: A Functional Approach)

Beginning 1.5 million years ago with Homo erectus, Suzana Herculano-Houzel convincingly concludes that the human brain, a primate brain, owes its cognitive abilities to the number of neurons in the cerebral cortex. Engagingly and accessibly, she expands upon Wrangham's and Aiello's hypotheses that the brain was 'fed' by calories from cooked foods.

(Frances Burton, Professor Emerita, Department of Anthropology, University of Toronto; author of Fire: The Spark that Ignited Human Evolution)

In keeping with the great neuroanatomist, Santiago Ramon y Cajal
By Kelly Lambert
Suzana Herculano-Houzel has revolutionized the field of evolutionary neurobiology and her engaging story is told in her new book The Human Advantage. Being a neuroscientist myself for three decades, I can think of no other contemporary neuroscientist who has transformed the field as much as Dr. Herculano-Houzel---and she is just getting started! In keeping with the great neuroanatomist, Santiago Ramon y Cajal, she has redefined our thoughts about the neuroarchitecture of the human brain and its position among other mammalian (and non-mammalian!) brains. By devising innovative histological techniques to systematically quantify neural cells, her work confirms that neurons DO count and, as described in this book, they make humans stand out among the earth's inhabitants. Point in case, Dr. Herculano-Houzel reminds us that humans are the only species trying to understand their own brains! In her informal, conversational tone, she takes the reader on her own fascinating professional journey---reminding us that it doesn't always require the most expensive, sophisticated equipment to provide clues about some of natures' greatest mysteries---but it does require sophisticated brains! There's no doubt that Dr. Herculano-Houzel has the neural sophistication to continue to make significant contributions to the field of neuroscience. Welcome to the U.S., Suzana! You are now one of our country's scientific treasures.

I used to be uneasy about claims that the human brain was special because it is large for our body size: relative size just didn't seem like it could be the best measure of whatever enabled intelligence.

At last, Herculano-Houzel has invented a replacement for that measure. Her impressive technique for measuring the number of neurons in a brain has revolutionized this area of science.

We can now see an important connection between the number of cortical neurons and cognitive ability. I'm glad that the book reports on research that compares the cognitive abilities of enough species to enable moderately objective tests of the relevant hypotheses (although the research still has much room for improvement).

We can also see that the primate brain is special, in a way that enables large primates to be smarter than similarly sized nonprimates. And that humans are not very special for a primate of our size, although energy constraints make it tricky for primates to reach our size.

I was able to read the book quite quickly. Much of it is arranged in an occasionally suspenseful story about how the research was done. It doesn't have lots of information, but the information it does have seems very new (except for the last two chapters, where Herculano-Houzel gets farther from her area of expertise).

Challenging Brain Science Dogma!

Herculano-Houzel, provides compelling evidence that the human brain is remarkable, but yet not special. That is, not special when considered in the light of evolution. The human brain has a larger number of neurons in the cerebral cortex than any other species. The author argues we are primates and our brains have evolved in accordance with primate scaling rules that make it possible for a large number of neurons to fit into a relatively small volume as compared with other mammals. Thanks to the technological innovation, cooking, introduced by our ancestors we were able to escape the energy constraints of a raw food diet. Our neurons needed a larger number of calories that were only possible via cooking of food. This book challenges central tenets often promoted by authors, and instructors in neuroscience. Does the human brain consist of 100 billion neurons? Does the human brain consist of 10 x more glia than neurons? The answer is no to both of these questions.

excellent coverage of crypto!
By W Boudville
For the acutely interested reader, this encylopedia is well worth perusing from cover to cover. It is not that long that this is an arduous task. Nor is it that highly mathematical that you will take months doing so. The level of mathematical treatment is moderate. By that I mean it is less than in journal papers. To be sure, you need a strong maths background going in. And previous exposure to various crypto ideas, notably public key infrastructure, would be good.

For Web usage, people worried about the rising levels of malware might see what the book offers as possible countermeasures. As ecommerce and other activities become more frequent, the possibility of man in the middle attacks increases. Plus, the incredible recent surge in phishing and pharming has led some to suggest that strong cryptographic methods for authentication of messages and web pages might be useful. Keep in mind that this is not necessarily a given. Other methods are possible which avoid cryptography. (I am the co-inventor of several of these methods.) This is something that an astute reader should keep in mind when going through the text. Step up from the details of the various crypto procedures and ask yourself if there are ways to avoid using these, and still prevent attacks. The entire mindset of this book is about using crypto. While it is a dreadful cliche to say 'think outside the box', perhaps you should try to do so here.

There is even a discussion of quantum cryptography. Which may be an ultimate, unbreakable method, if it ever becomes feasible. The quantum systems are so delicate, especially if coherence needs to be maintained over macroscopic distances, that one might reasonably wonder about the eventual efficacies. There are two main postulated usages. One is to break an existing encryption. The other is to prevent a man in the middle attack. It is in the latter that coherence may be more of a problem. For the former, one can imagine a spatially limited, microscopic or mesoscopic system, in which the decryption is occurring.

Great Cryptography Reference
By JumpingJackFlash
Even though this is a 1st edition, you cannot get a better cryptography reference book. Learn something about just about every algorithm on the market up to the 2005 printing. I would get the 2nd edition, but I could not justify a $600 price tag at this time.
