Definitely A Keeper!

This has got to be one of my favorite, if not the favorite, textbooks of all-time! I did not appreciate the cost, even for rental, but the text is jam-packed with valuable information for the budding entrepreneur! Don't plan on returning this book if you are planning on becoming a business owner. Do yourself a favor and purchase it!

Excellent "How To" for Optical Designers

In the acknowledgements the authors state they "wanted to create a book in the field of optical system design that was clear and easy to understand" - Mission accomplished!

This book is indeed easy to understand but nevertheless provides detailed explanations of how to design an optical system. While not deeply mathematical there are sufficent formulaes provided (with examples) so you can understand what to do and how to do it. If you were puzzled as to why achromatic lenses are used you won't be after you read this book. The book also explains how distortion occurs and how to get rid of it. Also there are sections on mechanical components such as lens mounting etc. The book also explains how to use typical optical design software.

My only (slight) dissapointment was the relatively few descriptions of typical systems - but using the book you could design these from first principles. Also to be fair there are so many designs out there that this is probabaly asking too much.

I bought this book because as an electronics engineer I did not know enough about optical systems to be able to design one. Reading this book and downloading some freeware optical design software (and using the book to help understand the outputs) has solved that problem

One of the best technical books I own

Having studied the comments on four other books before holding my breath and purchasing "Optical System Design," I was still worried that it would turn out to be a physics-oriented treatment of the subject despite the comments.

I was happily surprised.

Not only is this book well- and often humorously-written (to me at least), it has memorable explanations which make applying the knowledge easier.

In particular, the excellent treatment throughout the book on the six major third-order aberrations' causes has helped me use my optical design tools more correctly. I do not guess about specific changes, I know what to expect when making a change in the design.

I have found over the years that purchasing two texts on a topic is a good strategy. One must be a "thick book," like "Optical System Design," and the other a "thin book" which serves as a map. I'm still looking for the "thin" compliment to OD, but its layout and index are good enough that I will probably not follow my normal pattern.

a bit disappointed

Based on other reviews, you expect a highly polished product - full of glossy enlightening diagrams and explanations. The book is OK and conveys many important notions of optics adequately, especially if you have some background knowledge. However, at times, it feels like a potpourri, too wide to be under control and lacking in rigor. The authors present a few formulas at times and assure us that they could write many more "if they wanted to". However, this book really feels like the work of practitioners - a bit thin on the theory side. Many figures have a printing quality too low to be readable (so much for the Nyquist criteria, which by no coincidence is presented quite poorly) and the chapter on diffractive optics is a didactic catastrophe. Just because a book has been around for a long time and is respected in the field doesn't mean that it can't be improved upon. Still, I find myself reading the book time and again. The book will complement nicely Born and Wolf, which lies at the other extreme.

Perhaps companionship wouldn't have fostered Elvis' creative side, maybe the two would have been sensations as the Presley Brothers, or any of a number of scenarios. By contrast, Peter Whitmer advances the notion that Presley's status as a "twinless twin" was a defining characteristic in the superstar's life. It drew him inexorably close to his mother, a relationship which shadowed his every move. Whitmer offers a bank of statistical evidence to his point and supplies an unusual look at one of our culture's most examined but misunderstood figures.

The central argument of this dicey Elvis bio (which, at least in the galley, misspells Presley's middle name throughout) is that the defining moment in the King's 42 years was the death at birth of his twin brother, Jesse. That psychological wound, contends clinical psychologist Whitmer (When the Going Gets Weird, about Hunter S. Thompson), shaped Elvis's life. Perhaps; but what is certain is that this book has personality problems of its own. While Whitmer hews doggedly to his central thesis, he is, ironically, at his best when the text reads as a straightforward life and times, offering detailed accounts of such subjects as rural Southern culture, Elvis's film career and his lurid decline. When the book returns explicitly to its main theme, however, it seems too insistent, even grasping; an argument about Elvis's androgynous appeal is backed up by no less an authority than Phyllis Diller. Ultimately, readers' responses to this book may depend on whether they believe that this author, or anyone for that matter, can accurately diagnose the psychopathology of someone he's never met, and whether they find illuminating or foolhardy such statements as: "To fully understand the emotional turmoil Elvis would suffer throughout his forty-two years, it is necessary to begin in utero...." While more nuanced and compassionate than Albert Goldman's hatchet job, this bio hasn't usurped Peter Guralnick's more rounded and better-written Last Train to Memphis as the definitive portrait of an American icon. Whitmer, a clinical psychologist and writer, tries to delve into the inner psyche of Elvis to better understand the American icon. He uses the twinless twin concept as his central theme, contending that throughout his life an incomplete Elvis searched for his twin brother, Jesse, who died at birth. Whitmer also argues that Elvis suffered from a dysfunctional family: his overprotective mother, Gladys, who refused to let Elvis mature naturally; his shiftless father, Vernon, who spent part of Elvis's formative years in prison and failed to provide a strong male role model; and manager Tom Parker, who assumed Gladys's role upon her death. The author asserts that these psychological factors and family dynamics led an alienated Elvis to eating disorders, excessive dependence, sexual abnormalities, and his singing, which acted as a form of therapy. Though presenting interesting background information, Whitmer delivers a sensationalist psychohistory that leaps from threads of fact to outlandish, unsubstantiated psychological theories. A Fascinating Read

I read this book AFTER reading the 2 book biography of Elvis by Peter Guralnick and I think that is how best to read this. While Guralnick gives the 'definative' story of Elvis and what happened to him, I think "The Inner Elvis" explains the WHY of it all. There is in this book the 'missing link' the explanation of why, and how Elvis was so affected by the early years of his life and the psychological effects of such things as his mother's over protection "enmeshment", his dead twin brother amongst other things. This book, I found, was a fascinating read but if you haven't read the full biography of Elvis' life and were looking for it here then there's a lot of detail missing, but that isn't what the author intended, I believe. His point and explanations are very well made & I rate this a 5 star read.

Interesting perspective but sometimes far fetched

A different and valuable analysis of Elvis Presley presenting the basis for his behavior in later life. I found a great deal of it plausible and very helpful in my understanding of the man. However, much of the reasoning seemed contorted and overextended with rambling, sometimes disjointed and overworked passages. It was like listening to Allen Greenspan before a congressional committee. I felt that the author made some conflicting statements. Most difficult for me to accept was the degree to which Elvis's life was supposedly shaped by the death of his twin at birth. But then I'm no psychologist.

The "Why" Of Elvis Explained

This is a great work not to be missed, for those looking for exceptional insight and value into Elvis's world.

The analysis of "Twinless Twins" was priceless in its value at showing who Elvis was as a person, and I had to call home to see if I had been a twinless twin myself, since I have felt many of those same feelings (other than having my long standing invisible friend revisited, mom said no...).

The Inner Elvis takes the reader into how the closeness of being twins in the womb can change a person forever, even when they grow up distanced from their twin by death or physical separation.

Add to that a mother who was unable to cope with the loss of one son and the abuse of a wayward husband. She heaped the love and the fears of their spartan early existence onto the one son remaining.

Combining all of this offers a fascinating read into Elvis' motivations.

I did take some objection to the author's obvious atheistic viewpoint, as God was very real to Elvis, his mom and also to me, and He isn't some crutch to the weak masses as Peter likes to put forth here. But, Peter, like everyone, will find that out for himself one day too.

All in all though, The Inner Elvis is a worthwhile read for the "why's" about Elvis. I always wondered why Elvis didn't stand up and tell the near-criminal Colonel Tom Parker to shove off in the 60's when the incredibly selfish and controlling manager forever damaged Elvis' movie career potential, and now I know. It was Elvis' fatal flaw, now understood a bit better.

RIP Elvis, you were a wonderful, warm and brilliantly gifted man who shared his talents and love with the world. You left the world so much better for having been in it. And, say Hi to Jessie Garon for me.

This book will draw you to the authority that you already have in Jesus Christ through his death on the cross and resurrection. You can take Scripture and declare it over your live and you will see how it transforms you. There is a boldness that rises in you when you finally comprehend who you truly are in Christ and the completed work of the cross. The Word is Truth, it is the very essence of who God is and He has given it to us to use on a daily basis. Take for example Isaiah 53 and declare it, speak it, DECREE it over you if you are facing a disease or illness the enemy threw at you. It's a LIE, a lie from the very pit of hell! Don't accept what the doctor told you you have, reject it just like you would reject a moldy hamburger. You wouldn't eat it, would you? Then why sit back and accept the lies of the enemy sitting down when you have the AWESOME power of the spoken work and authority in Jesus Christ. Get the book, you won't regret it! I

A must read for learning about the authority we have over the enemy.

Kingdom Authority by Kynan Bridges is a book that will equip it's readers on how to overcome the enemy, no longer allowing him to hold any authority in their lives. In today's world evil is all around, but as long as we are in right standing with our Heavenly Father we have nothing to fear, because he gives us authority over the devil. When I picked up this book I was amazed at the easiness of understanding what Mr. Bridges was saying. He has a way of writing that makes me feel like he is talking to me, in a down to earth easy to understand way. He doesn't make unrealistic claims, instead he provides spiritually based information that he backs up with scripture that is eye opening to say the least. I have read several books on spiritual warfare, and what makes this one unique is that while the author talks about the devil, his main focus in on teaching us how to claim our power and to break the bondage that he has placed so many of us in. Each chapter opens with a scripture, and ends with a deliverance prayer, and touches on such topics as, exposing the enemy, called to conquer, dressed for the battle, just to name a few. When i first picked up this book I sat down and read it cover to cover but I have since been rereading it as a few chapters a day using it as a Bible study of sorts, using it as way to dig deeper into the scripture of spiritual warfare.

Until Christians embrace and understand the authority over the enemy, an authority that all Christians have who are in right standing with the Heavenly Father, they can never really claim victory over the enemy. In a world with so much lukewarm religion where we are often taught to fear the devil, if we are taught to believe that there is a devil at all, we need to change our thinking and realize that God is in control, and he gives us the authority to be in control as well. It's time to embrace the power we have, but first we must learn about the power we have been given and Kingdom Authority by Kynan Bridges will provide readers with the knowledge they need in order to claim that power.

I wish I knew this as a young believer. And even know there were new things that I learned. I want my kids to read this book so they can walk in victory as well!

The Real Stories

Charles Perrault, a minor government official in 17th century France, is best remembered today for the collection of fairy tales he published in 1697, just six years before his death. Perrault, however, was not the author of any of the tales collected in his book. Rather, he rewrote various folk tales, tales of unknown origin snatched from the oral tradition of his time, and published those stories in the versions that most closely resemble the ones children grow up on today.

This new Christopher Betts translation of Perrault's work presents a few of the stories in simple verse, the rest in prose, and it includes an all-star list of fairy tales. Among the stories in "The Complete Fairy Tales" are: "Little Red Riding-Hood," "Sleeping Beauty," "Bluebeard," "Puss in Boots," "Cinderella," and a story very similar to that of "Hansel and Gretel." But make no mistake about it - these are not the fairy tales you heard from your mother and they are, most definitely, not the ones made famous by Mr. Disney.

Nevertheless, Perrault did intend that his stories be read to small children by their parents. For that reason, his versions of the folk tales are shorter than the stories with which adults of the period would have been more familiar, they encompass a limited number of characters and motivations, and much of the most obvious sexual content has been removed or, at the least, disguised. In addition, within his stories, Perrault emphasizes lessons and warnings about the process of growing up and he attaches at least one moral to the end of each tale. The attached morals, however, do seem to be aimed more at the parent/reader than at the listening children.

Adult readers will be intrigued by the editing process to which Perrault subjected his chosen tales and probably a little shocked by some of the details he excluded. Perrault clearly felt it necessary to clean up the old folk tales before publishing them as children's entertainment. Who might have imagined, for instance, that Snow White would be raped by her prince and would give birth to twins before she was awakened? Or that Little Red Riding-Hood would be forced by the wolf to eat part of her dismembered grandmother? Or that incest would play a prominent role in some of the tales?

"The Complete Fairy Tales" includes twenty-six remarkable illustrations by 19th century French literary illustrator Gustave Doré (including the book's cover and the "Cinderella" illustration shown here) and it is amply footnoted. Most intriguing, though, is the book's presentation of alternate versions of several of today's most beloved fairy tales, versions that make it obvious why Perrault felt obliged to edit the tales to fit his intended audience. Kindle Version-- Good Content, Slightly Flawed Format

I think previous reviewer "Sam Sattler" covered just about everything you need to know about the content of this book, so I won't rehash it here; I recommend that you read his/her review.

I bought the Kindle version of this book, and the text itself is lovely. It collects all Perrault's fairy tales, with illustrations and a wealth of extra information and history, both of the stories and Perrault, in the introductions and appendix.

There are a few things to be aware of if you plan to buy this book for Kindle.
The text size of the verse stories varies and appears in three drastically different sizes within the same story and sometimes on the same page, regardless of any adjustment made in the text size menu.
The illustrations, which themselves are lovely, include brief descriptions that often appear quite far away from their corresponding pictures- that is, several pages before or after you actually see the picture, there will be a line or two in italics that says something like "the prince meets the princess."
These aren't major issues, and they don't cause any great difficulty in reading the book. However, this book is a bit more expensive than the other ebooks I've bought, and for the price I expected something without any strange mistakes, which is why I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5.

Great book, poor manufacturing

This was my favorite book as a child and I wanted to share it with my 10-month-old son. It's a great story for kids and every illustration is unique with many different and interesting aspects. The overall material quality, however; is poor. I don't remember that my childhood book was as poorly-made as this one. The trademark gold foil spine is very thin and was peeling off when it arrived. The almost transparently thin pages protrude outside the cheap cardboard covers and the print on some pages is so offset that it almost looks as if the image was meant to be seen through 3D glasses. It's disappointing that an American treasure like Little Golden Books has become a victim of such low-grade manufacturing.

The Most Profound Work On This Topic

Having spent decades researching and depicting elements of America's Great Seal in my paintings and murals, and also writing and teaching about these symbols, I can say without question that David Ovason has created THE most profound work on this topic ever to see the light of day. His scholarship and genius in The Secret Symbols of the Dollar Bill are unparalleled in this most under-appreciated and misunderstood area of America's history and meaning. It has shed great light on the deeper mysteries of America's spirit and destiny and the New Order of the Ages.

Ovason is an excellent scholar and does not present speculation as fact. When he is not 100% sure of something, he tells you, which is greatly appreciated.

Among other things, this book will tell you in what ways Sir Francis Bacon's New Atlantis was linked to the colonization of America... What magical symbols are found on the dollar bill... The origin of the word dollar... The origin of the symbol for the dollar... How the original dollar name can be linked with a holy number... Whether the dollar symbol was derived from astrology... Good, but left me very disappointed

I got this book through interlibrary loan at my public library, and I was very excited to read it, since I have recently become quite interested in arcane symbolism. I understood Ovason was an expert in the field, so I had quite high expectations for this book . . . and unfortunately, it just didn't meet them.

Though he made some neat points here and there, his writing style was generally bland and uninviting. The majority of the symbolic interpretations seemed forced and mundane, at best. And like another reviewer pointed out: the more I read, the more I couldn't shake the feeling that this may have been done on purpose, as if to divert people's attention from the real, deeper meanings behind the symbolism. I would certainly encourage people to read it for themselves and reach their own conclusions. After all, it was not a bad book. It just left me very disappointed.

A fascinating little book-like to see an expanded edition

Get out your magnifying glass and a dollar bill and have some fun. David Ovason has succeeded in setting forth many strange and wondrous facts about the "ordinary" U.S. dollar bill. There is indeed a lot of amazing symbolism and numerology, much of it Masonic or perhaps Rosicrucian, on this Federal Reserve Note (by the way, I have to point out that the Fed Bank is privately owned, a fact omitted by Ovason). The author seems not to know that the Masons are anti-Christian; he never mentions the Rosicrucians (who are pro-Christian), but finds the magical number 33 in several places on the dollar bill, which corresponds with the number of years Jesus is said to have lived on Earth. Occasionally he fails to follow through on some of his discoveries; for example, so what if there are 55 dots and 25 lines in the "glory" surrounding the "constellation" over the eagle on the obverse? Ovason does not point out the numerological significance, if there is any, to 55 and 25. An oddity is that in item 30, on page 37, he mentions the official design for the national flag to have 13 stars, and yet the book is illustrated on this page with a flag of 12 stars. Then, the idea that the constellation Lyra, the Lyre, somehow represents America is questionable; since Lyra in fact has only 10 stars (although Ovason never mentions this fact). Some of his straightedge tricks, on page 75 e.g., do not seem to work out in the real world. He makes an interesting point or two that tend to confirm that the numerology was deliberately designed into the bill and is not just a figment of some modern numerologist's overheated imagination: for example, he says the old Latin motto was properly "Ex pluribus unum," which was modified to the less usual usage of "E pluribus unum" to achieve the count of 13 letters in the motto; similarly "Novus ordo saeclorum" was modified to the less usual "Novus ordo seclorum" to achieve the count of 17 letters for numerological reasons that he goes on to explain. Ovason has discovered that there are 33 words or groups of numbers on the obverse (p 115; be sure to count the tiny number, usually overlooked, to the "southeast" of the big ONE), and that there are nine "units" to the large word "ONE" with 11 shadow units, numerologically significant numbers. What makes this convincing to me (not mentioned by Ovason) is the fact that the two smallest shadow units are totally unnecessary to the artistic design, in fact they are obtrusive once you notice them (they look a bit like apostrophes, and you would probably not notice them if you were not looking for them), so they have to have been deliberately planted into the pattern. (It is too bad the designer of the 1935 dollar bill, Edward M. Weeks, evidently never set forth in writing the symbolism he went to such lengths to put into his product.) On page 114 he says the letters USA appear on the back of the dollar bill 26 times; what he means is that the letters U, S and A taken separately appear 26 times in total. However, I see no significance to this number. If there is any, he does not tell us what it is. "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ONE DOLLAR" has 37 letters, which does have a numerological significance (page 114). Then there is the business of the pyramid; according to our author, there are 202 surviving courses in the Great Pyramid of Gizeh (said to be the model for the pyramid on the dollar bill). Seven more courses, at the top, including the capstone, are missing or fragmentary, whatever that means. That would make 209 courses total in the intact pyramid. But some say it was 221, or, as on page 88, 211. Be that as it may (a topic for future investigation?), the highest surviving course is "nine massy stones" plus "two that are wanting at the angles" or 11 stones. Someone is bound to eventually claim there is some link between this number and the terrorist incidents of 9-11-2001, itself a rich field of numerological study. Anyway, this lavishly illustrated little tome will provide anyone who loves symbols with hours of educational entertainment, and ammunition for many a conversation or bet when the cocktail hour rolls around.
